Description

ROBERT MYERS, OF FACTORY POINT, VERMONT.
MARBLE-SAWING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,015, dated June 3, 1856.
To all whom t may concern.'
LBe it known that I, ROBERT MYERS, of Factory Point, in the county of Bennington and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful improvement in Machines for i Sawino Marble in Taper Form; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan, Fig. 2 is a side elevation; and Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the machine.
Similar characters of reference in the several figures denote the same part of the machine.
The nature of my invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of mechanism for producing the cuts of the opposite faces of the block, from the simultaneous rotation of two crank shafts oblique to each other, by means of a gearing connection on opposie faces of the same wheel.
The details of construction and operation will be understood from the following description and reference to the drawing, in which- A is the frame supporting mechanism, B and C are two crank shafts, resting in boxes a a', Z) b', which boxes are supported upon trams c c, d d, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The shafts B C have each a pinion (D and E), meshing with the opposite cogged faces of the wheel F. This wheel is secured to the vertical shaft G and is driven by power applied to shaft H, through gearing connection I J.
The boxes a. a', o b, are secured in position by screws e, passing through slots f of boxes to the trams. These slots are curved so as to be concentric with vertical shaft Gr, so that when the screws e are loosened and the boxes are moved upon the trams, the shafts A and B will in every position radiate from the axis of shaft G.
The cranks are connected by pitmen K, with saw frames P, working between adjustable guides h. The connection of the pitmen with the frames should be such as to be capable of adjustment to the inclination of the crank shaft; in the drawing a screw Z9 is shown.
The number of frames connected with the crank shafts will depend on the length of the crank shafts, the character of work to be performed, and the power at command. If it be desired, the cranks may connect by pitmen with a second series of frames on the opposite side; so that two blocks of stone may be operated upon at the same time.
The operation of the machine is obvious from the above description. The boxes are moved upon the trams, so as to give the shafts B C the requisite inclination, and the guides h adjusted to permit the saw frames to conform to the lines of direction of the pitmen. Motion is then given to shaft H, by which the saw frames are reciprocated through the gearing connection above set forth.
Disclaiming the method of adjusting the crank shafts around the driving shaft, and of adjustable guides to govern the saws.
I claimy As my invention the arrangement of the shafts B and C, relative to the driving shaft and to each other, as described, in combination with the saws P and varying pitmen K; for effecting the simultaneous cutting of three or more taper blocks at a single operation, as specified.
