Description

NITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
ABRAHAM A. GOLDSMITH, OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,468, dated April 7, 1874; application led February 2l, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ABRAHAM A. GOLD- SMITH, of Charleston, in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bale-Ties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction. and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
` tie:
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates aloop having arectangular slot through it, which is slightly tapered, as shown in Fig. 2. B represents a wedge, which is constructed with a ridge or shoulder, b, transversely across its upper surface, and also with another shoulder transversely across its bottom side, near its largest end. This wedge B is permanently secured to end C of the bale-band by means of a rivet, a.
It will be observed, by reference to Fig. 2, that the smallest end of the wedge B does not lie ilat upon the band. This will allow the parts to yield while inserting' the wedge into the loop; and, after the shoulder b has passed through the loop, it will be caused to spring up and lock the wedge, preventing a casualV detachment ofthe tie.
Vheu the two ends C C of the bale-baud are connected together by the wedge and its loop, the expansion of the bale, which is embraced by the band, will rmly draw the wedge into the loop and make a secure fastening'.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The bale-tie described, consisting of a Wedge, tapered and shouldered, as described, and per manently secured to the bale-band, in combination with the loop A, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ABRAHAM A. GOLDSMITH.
