FOUNTATN PEN WITH PENCIL POINT.
Application filed. September 20, 1922. Serial No. 589,420.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST J. Konrsnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mayville, in the county of Dodge and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain Pens with Pencil Points, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
It is the purpose of the present invention to provide a device of this kind, wherein the barrel comprises two telescopical sections, one having a spiral thread for cooperation with a projection on the interior of the other, whereby upon holding the former fixed and rotating the latter, a piston (which is swiveled to the latter) may be operated in the former to draw writing fluid thereinto, that is to say through the pencil shaped point, so that it may pass out through the point when the fountain pen is used for writing.
Another purpose is to provide a fountain pen particularly adapted for use in connection with a pencil shaped point of the character and constructionshown, described and claimed in the copending application filed on the 20th day of September, 1922, there being ducts or passages in the body of the pencil shaped point including some suitable porous fibrous material, through which the writing fluid. may flow properly, not too fast or not too slow, but sufliciently to permit the pencil point to'be used for writing.
Another purpose is to provide a very simple, efficient and practical construction of device of this character, and one which may be manufactured cheaply and sold at a reasonable profit.
Still another purpose is to provide a fountain pen which holds a substantial supply of ink, and wherein the structure is strong and durable in its detail.
A further purpose is to provide a fountain pen, which may be easily taken apart for cleaning and repairing, and also to provide a filling device which is simple, etlicient, practical and durable, and so constructed as to govern the amount of ink to be drawn into the barrel.
Incidently it is the aim to utilize a pencil shaped point, with means constructed tli arein for regulating the ink in its flow and ilso do away with the defect of having a 4 ied out pen point which is not at the present time giving the best results.
A still further purpose is the provision of a fountain pen of this character including a piston, whose piston rod passes through the barrel and is supplied with a head so as to swivelly connect the rod to one end of one of the sections of the barrel, whereby when rotating said section ink may be drawn into the other section of the barrel.
It is to be understood that the particulars herein given are in no way limitative and that while still keeping within the scope of the invention, any desired modifications of detail and desired proportions may be made in the apparatus according to circumstances.
The invention comprisesfurther features and combination ofparts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a View in section of the improved fountain pcn constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the outer section of the barrel in a position with the inner section extending a considerable distance thereinto, so that upon rotating the first section writing fluid may be drawn into the ink chamber, so that it may flow from the pencil shaped point;
Figure 2 is a sectional view showing the outer section in a position as having: finished drawing a writing fluid into the ink chamber;
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail view of the spiral feed connection between the outer section and the inner section of the barrel.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the barrel of the fountain pen as a whole, which comprises the inner and outer barrel sections 2 and 3, the former of which telescopes into the latter and is provided with a fountain or ink chamber 4. one end of the section 2 isreduced, and the outer surface of the redu'ced'portion is threaded as shown. at 5. The exterior threads 5 of the reduced portion connect with the interior threads 6 of the cap or cover 7 of the fountain pen. The inner surface of the fountain or ink chamber 4 has threads. 8 which are engaged by the exterior threads of an improved pencil point 9. Any suitable pen point, either in the form of a pen, or pencil shaped or otherwise may be connected in the chamber 1 of the section 2 of the fountain pen. However it is the aim of the present invention to utilize the character of pencil shaped pen point, as shown, set forth and claimed in said copending application.-
The end of the section 2 of the barrel is interiorly threaded as at 11 for engagement with the threads 12 of the enlarged end 13 of the sleeve 14. The greater portion of the sleeve 14 is reduced, and the outer surface of this reduced portion has a spiral thread 15. The reduced portion of the sleeve fits into the reduced portion 16 of the chamber 17 of the section 3 of the barrel. The interior of the reduced portion 16 of the section 3 of the barrel is provided with projections 18 and 19. These projections engage the spiral thread, and act to shift the section 3 of the barrel telescopically with relation to the section 2 thereof. The spiral thread leads at one end into a blank space and is provided at an intermediate point with a second blank space for a purpose to be described. Mounted in the chamber or fountain 4 is a piston 20, whose piston rod 21 passes through the sleeve 14, and has a head 22, which is held swivelly in a pocket or space 23 of one end 2 1 at one end of the section 3 of the barrel. The interior of the end of the section 3 of the barrel adjacent where the head 22 is swivelly mounted, is provided with threads 26, with which the threads of the plug 25 engage. The plug 25 is reduced, and its reduced portion 27 has threads, to be engaged by the threads on the interior of the cap or cover 7 when the cover is in use over the pencil shaped point. The outer face of the plug 25 has a depression or slot, for the reception of a small screw driver or like instrument, whereby the plug 25 may be removed. By using a screw driver or similar instrument, the plug may be removed, for the purpose of cleaning the instrument. The piston is fixed to the reduced end 28 of its rod 21 in any suitable manner, there being a cotter pin 29 passing transversely thereof to hold the piston in place on the rod. A suitable clip 30 is carried by the cover or cap of the pen. for the purpose of holding the fountain pen in the pocket of wearing apparel.
In operation, the cover or cap is first removed and attachedto the threaded reduced end of the plug 25. The pencil shaped point is then submerged in a body of writng fluid, the section 2 having been grasped n one hand so as to prevent its turning, so that when the section 3 of the barrel is rotated, the piston 20 will be drawn through the chamber or fountain 4, creating a suction therein, which will draw the writing fluid through the various channels of the pencil shaped point.
The blank space at the intermediate per tion of the spiral thread is provided so that the barrel may be only partly filled by mo ving the handle member to bring the projection 18 into this intermediate blank space. lVhen the projection 18 is at this point it is apparent that the handle may be turned in either direction without having any effeet on the position of the stem or plunger though when it is desired to effect movement of the plunger in either direction it is then merely necessary to push the handle lengthwise to reengagc the projection with the spiral thread. The blank space at the end of the thread is provided so that when the projection 18 is opposite this point further rotary movement of the handle would have no effect on the stem and will neither move 'it in such a direction as to force out the ink nor cause any binding of or injury to the parts.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed is 1. In a fountain pen, a barrel comprising inner and outer sections, the inner section having a chamber for receiving writing fluid and provided with a pen point having passages therein, a piston operable in the chamber and having a piston rod passing through the inner end of the inner sec tion, said piston rod being swivelly connected to one end of the outer section, and means operatively connecting the two sections, whereby upon holding one section and rotating the other section, the piston may be moved in the chamber for drawing the ink thereinto through the pen point, the end of the outer section to which the piston rod is connected being provided with a plug to cover the swivel connection of the rod, said plug being exteriorly threaded, and a cover for connection. to the threaded end of the plug.
2. In a fountain pen, a barrel comprising inner and outer sections, the inner section having at one end a pen point provided with passages, said inner section having a chamber for the reception of writing fluid, said inner section having a reduced extension, the outer section having a reduced bore to receive the reduced extension of the inner section, a piston operable in said chamber and provided with a piston rod passing through the reduced extension of the inner section, one end of the piston rod being swiveled to one end of the outer section, said reduced extension having a spiral thread, and spaced lugs carried by the reduced bore of the outer section cooperating with said thread, whereby upon rotating the outer section and holding the inner section, the piston may reciprocate to draw ink through the pen point into said chamber.
