G. DE VINCENT! HAIR CUTTER Filed May 17. 1921 J1/wanten@ Gaetano Devincenf Patented Apr. l, 1924.,
NITD STA S Fris.A
HAIER CUTTER.
Application filed May 17,
T @ZZ whom it may cof/wem:
Be it known that 1, GAETANO DE VIN- onN'rr, a citizen of the United States, resid ing at Edgemoor, in the county of New lCastle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Cutters, of which thefollowing is av specification. v
My said invention rela-tes to an improved hair-cutter of the type adapted to be used by a person in cutting his own hair and it is an object of the invention to providea device of this sort which shall fit nicely in the hand of the user so that it may be operated without undue fatigue. i
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which shall be operated by al spring motor, as it is tiresome and inconvenient to operate clippers or like devices in cutting ones own hair. i
Another object of the invention is to provide adjusting means by which the length of the hair-cut may be predetermined and by adjustment of which means the hair may be cut to different length on different parte of the head.
Referring to thefa-ccompanying drawings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a vertical section of my device,
Figure 2 a plan of the same with parts in section,
Figure 3 a detail of one of the cutting members, and
Figure 4 shows a casing of slightly different form.
ln the drawings reference Icharacter indicates a casing having a reduced rear portion which is narrower than the body and is somewhat flattened. The lower portion of the casing at its forward end is formed with teeth 11 to co-act with the teeth of a member 12 forming in effect clippers of well-known type. The teeth at 11 may be integral with the casing or formed on a separate member attached thereto in any convenient manner.
The upper portion of the casing is preferably formed as a separate member 13 resting on the member 10 at ,141i and engaging a rove 15 in cutter 12. Within the casing is a plate 16 attached to the upper member of the casing as by a screw 17. A second plate 17 spaced from the first co-acts therewith. to

support a series of shafts 18, 19, 20 and 21. Shaft 18 is the shaft of a spring motor contained in a casing 22 having at its lower end a ratchet` 23 coaoting with the other pawl and at its upper end a gear 24: engaging a pinion 25. Pinion 25 is carried by shaft 19 which also carries a gear 26 engaging a pinion 27 on shaft 20. This shaft carries at its upper end a scape wheel 28 engaging pallets 29, 29 on shaft 21. Shaft 21 carries a roclr arm 30 engaging a block 31 slidably mount- -ed in a slot of cutter 12.
The `means for adjusting the length of the hair-'cut comprises a member 82 pivoted at 33 and having'three series .of teeth At its sides the member 32 has upwardly7 projecting slotted arms 35 and bolts 36 fixed to the sides of the casing to engage in the slots and hold the member 32 in adjusted position. i In the operatingvof the device the motor is wound up by a key 37 and is held so by a pawl enga-ging the ratchet 23the cutter being held by the operator in either hand. The pawl is operated' by `any convenient means and `the motor through the connected gearing causes shaft 21 to vibrate. It will be noted that the pallets 29 and 29 are differently formed so that rotation of scape wheel 28 in one direction will serve to vibrate the shaft 21 to-and-fro by the cam action of the teeth against the projections of the escapement. Vibration of the escapement will slide the segmental cutter 12 b-acl and forth over the lower cutterteeth 11. The cutter may be used without the guard 32 in the usual manner to give a. close hair*- Cut. lf the member 82 is used the lower set of teeth will give a somewhat longer haircut as indicated in Figure 1. By loosening the nuts of bolts 36 the member 82 may be adjusted to position the second' or third sets of teeth in front ofthe teeth 11 whereupon the length ofthe hair-cut will vary correspondingly. The teeth 34 actin the same manner as a comb when used by the barber, as will be obvious.
1t will be evident to those skilled in the art that modifications of my device may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore 1 do not limit myself to the precise embodiment shown in the drawings and described in the specification but only as indicated in the appended claims. l may for example, form the casing with its lower surface substantially straight,
as in Figure 4C, so that the tail'portion 38 shall slope downwardly instead of upward as in Figure 1 and various other changes may be made in the device.
f Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a hair cutting implement, a com bined casing and handle having a reduced rear portion Vthe underside thereof slopingv gradually upwardly and rearwardly, saidV casing carrying cutters projecting from the forward portion thereof, aV motor housed within the casing, and a movable cutter driven thereby and cooperating with the said cutters on the casing, substantially as set forth. Y
2. In a hair cutting implement, a combined casing and handle having aA reduced sloping graduallyY upwardly and rearward- 135 ly, a motor within the casing, a cutter operated by the motor, a comb curved transversely across the forward end of the casing and formed with a plurality of series ofV teeth projecting outwardly therefrom, substantially as set forth.
4. In a hair cutting implement, a comb carried by the implement extending transversely. across the fronti thereof, said comb having a plurality of series of teeth arranged in horizontally spaced relation, each series projecting outwardly from the comb, substantially as set forth.
5. In a hair cutting implement, a combined casing and handle having a reduced rear portion'on the under side thereof sloping gradually upwardly and rearwardly, said casing carrying cutters projecting from the forward portion thereof, a motor housed within the casing, amovable cutter driven thereby and cooperating with the said cutters on the casing, anda comb carried by the implement and curved*transversely across the front thereof, said comb having a plurality of series of teeth arranged in horizontally spaced. relation, each series projecting outwardly from the comb, substantially asset forth. Y Y
6. In a devicefor cutting hair, a comb having a plurality of series of teeth curved acrossY the longitudinal length thereof and means for mounting Vsaid comb on said device. i, i Y y In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Edgemoor, Delaware,
this siXteent-hday of May, D. nineteen hundred Y and twenty-one.
