Description

NITED STATES 'PATENT CFEICE..
GEORGE XV. HORTON, OF HINGHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,61 l, dated March 17, 1874; application filed February 12, 1874.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HoRToN, of Hingham, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Folding Tables, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l of the accompanying drawings is a top view of my improved table. folded, the dotted lines showing the same in position for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section, taken in line X Y, of the table in position for use. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section, taken in line V W, ofthe table folded.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, economical, and effective method of folding a cutting board or table, so as to admit of its being placed compactly away when not in use 5 and to accomplish this end- I connect two legs, A, at their upper part by a longitudinal brace or back piece, B, and hinge to the inner face of each leg at the top, so as to turn down flat on theirinner face, or to turn up, so that the rear portion shall bear on the tops of the legs, a rectangular or other shaped top, C. I also hinge to the inner side of the upper portion of the legs A, the rear ends of braces or side pieces D connected at the forward ends with the upper portions of legs E, which are cutout, as at a, to fit snugly against the inner face of the brace B when folded. The top C of the table may, if desired, be cut out, as at `b, to admit the front of a person when used as a cutting-board, and may be provided with a measuring-scale, c, let into the top of the table or board; or the table-top may be otherwise shaped and marked, as preferred, for various uses. On the under side of the top C, on each side, is located near the front a catch, d, and stop-piece e beveled on the bot,- tom, or otherwise formed, to allow the passage of and to hold the side piecesD when extended.
By reference to the drawings, it will readily be seen that, when the legs E are turned in, the side pieces D abut closely against the backpiece B, leaving the outside of the side piecesD on a line with the inner face of the upper part of the legs A, so as to allow the topO to turn snugly against them, thus leaving the whole in a compact form, as shown in Fig. 3, to be readily set away.
Vhen desired to use the table, the top is readily raised, and is supported by extending the legs E, the side pieces D of which are held between the catch and stop-piece d, or otherwise, the rear of the top G extending over, so as to have a bearing on the top of the back piece B.
Having thus described my improvements, what I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent, is-
A folding table having a top, C, hinged to the inner face of the upper portion of legs A connected by a longitudinal brace or back piece, B, and having side. pieces D hinged to the inner sides of the upper portion of said legs, and connected at the front with the upper portion of legs E, substantially as speciliied.
Intestimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' GEORGE W. HORTON.
Witnesses CARROLL D. WRIGHT, SAME. M. BARTON.
