METHQD OF DISPENSING ICE CREAM.
Application filed December 8, 1922. Serial No. 605,626.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SnvER'r M. FATLAND,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of Kitsap and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Dispensing Ice Cream, of which the folseverable by a knife or the like whereby individual portions of the containing means and contents may be removed and sold as desired.
A further object of the invention is the provision of caps or covers which may be used in conjunction with severed portions of the material in order to form a completely closed package. a
Another object .of the invention is to form the container so that the wall of the severed or individual portion may be gradually re moved as the contents is consumed.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmetary perspective view of one of the packages in use.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through one of the packages, showing in dotted lines the contents partly pushed out of the container.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a package with the wrapper drawn away.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of an elongated tube, showing an individual section cut therefrom and caps for inclosing the ends of the section, and
Figure 5 is a plan view of a container of a different shape.
Referring to the drawing more in detail, the numeral 1 indicates an elongated spirally wound tube of paper or the like. In the operation of the invention this tube is filled with ice cream or the like directly from the tank and is, of course, kept in a cool place.
When a purchaser desires a portion of the ice cream or other material being dispensed, a section 2 is cut from the elongated tube. as indicated in Figure 4. The severed section 2 may then be closed at both ends by means of. caps 3. These caps, as shown. are PTO.
vided with flanges 4 which are inserted in the ends of the tube, as indicated in Figures 2 and 3. Where a spirally wound tube is used the flanges might well engage the exterior of the tube, inasmuch as the spiral winding may be progressively drawn'away (see Figure 3) as the material is consumed. Where a plain tube is used, however, such as indlcated at 5 in Figure 1, it is desirable to position the caps 3 on the interior 'of the tube in order that the same may be used as a follower in forcing the material out through the end of the tube as the former is consumed. Such use of the invention is indicated by dotted lines in Figure 2 of the drawings.
The tube 1, which may be of any desired length, may also be of any desired shape in cross section, and as illustrative thereof I have shown the same as circular in Figure 1 to 4, inclusive, and square in F i ure 5, but
it is obvious that any preferred design may equally well be employed.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have devised a very simple and expeditious method of handling ice cream and the like at the counter and also that the package produced by this method provides a very convenient and attractive means for handling ice cream by the consumer.
In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described what I now believe to be the best embodiment of the invention, but I do not wish to be understood thereby as limiting myself or the scope of the invention. as many changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention; all such I aim to include in the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The method of dispensing ice cream, which includes placing the ice cream in an elongated rigid tube, cutting off a section of the tube and contents as desired, and inserting a closure in one end of the section, and employing said closure'to function as a follower.
2. The method of dispensing ice cream, which comprises packing the ice cream in a spirally wound tube, cutting off a section of the tube as desired, and inserting a flanged. cap on the interior of each end of tghe severed section, whereby either of said caps may be employed as a follower.
SEVERT M. FATLAND.
