GUY A. IVIESSACAR, OF IONIA, MICHIGAN.
LADDER-STEP BRACKET.
Application filed November 19, 1921. Serial No. 516,376.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GUY A. MnssAoAn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tonia, in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladder-Step Brackets, of which the following is a specifi-' lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustra tive of the preferred embodiment of the invention;--
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a conventional step ladder with the improvement applied.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view enlarged of a portion of a ladder side and a portion of a step viewed from above and from outside the ladder.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view enlarged of a portion of a ladder side and a portion of the step viewed from below and from inside the ladder.
Fig. 4 is an elevation from the front of a portion of a ladder side and a portion of one of the ladder steps with the improvement applied.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5--5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a detached perspective view of one of the improved clip devices from be neath.
The improved device is applicable to ladders of various forms and sizes, but more particularly to step ladders, in which 10 represents the sides and 11 the steps, preferably slightly mortised at their ends into the sides 10, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4.
The improvement herein disclosed comthe purpose of securing the said body prises combined bracing and coupling brackets for rigidly supporting and coupling the steps to the sides, and as the brackets are alike at both ends of the step except that they are rights and lefts, the de scription of one will suffice for all.
Each of the brackets is formed from a single piece of material, preferably sheet metal, and includes a rectangular body portion 12 having depending from one end thereof an arm which constitutes a combined coupling and bracing extension and the said arm has a reduced upper portion 13 and a lower portion 14. The upper part of the lower portion 14 is offset laterally with respectto the outer edge of the reduced portion 13. Depending from one side of the body portion 12 is a coupling flange 15 which is separated from the reduced upper portion 13 by a cleft- 16. The arm which provides the combined coupling and bracing extension inclines toward the outer edge of the flange 15.
The body portion 12 is provided with a plurality of openings through which are adapted to extend hold-fast devices 17 for ortion to the lower face of the step 11. The lower portion 14 of the combined coupling and bracing extension is provided in proximity to its forward edge with a plurality of openings through which are adapted to extend suitable hold-fast. devices for securing said extension to the inner edge of the lader. An opening is provided in the flange 15 and through which passes a bolt 19 and the latter projects through the ladder side 10 and carries a nut20 on its inner end. The nut 20 is held from retrograde rotation by contact with the body portion 12, as shown in Figures 3, 4 and 5, and by this arrangement the nut is held from working loose.
By this simple arrangement, the ladder sides and steps are firmly and rigidly united without the necessity for weakening either the steps or sides, and may be readily applied to ladders of various sizes and with steps and side portions of varying thicknesses.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be understood that modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the adapted to be positioned below and secured to the step of a ladder, a flange depending from one side of and disposed lengthwise with respect to the body portion and adapt ed to be secured to the inner side face of the ladder side, and an arm depending from the outer end of said body portion and providing a combined coupling and brace extension, said arm including a reduced upper portion and a lower portion having its upper part offset laterally with respect to the outer edge of said reduced portion and adapted to be secured in proximity to its forward edge to the rear edge of the ladder side, said reduced portion having its outer edge spaced from the inner side face of the ladder side.
2. A bracket for the purpose set forth comprising a rectangular body portion adapted to be positioned below and secured to the step of a ladder, a flange depending from one side of and disposed lengthwise with respect to the body portion and adapted to be secured to the inner side face of the ladder side, and an arm depending from the outer end of said body portion and providing a combined coupling and brace extension, said arm including a reduced upper portion and a lower portion having its up per par-t offset laterally with respect to the outer edge of said reduced portion and adapted to be secured in proximity to its forward edge to the rear edge of the ladder side, said reduced portion having its outer edge spaced from the inner side face of the ladder side, the ends of said flange being inclined inwardly with respect to said body portion, and said extension inclining toward the outer end edge of said flange.
In testimony whereof, I afIiX my signature hereto.
GUY A. MESSAGAR.
