Description

G. POPP$ HOOK Filed ADril l9 1925 Patented Oct. 9, 1923.
v UNITED. STATES GEORGEPOPPS, OF MASSENA, NEW YORK.
HOOK.
Application filed April 19,1923. Serial No. 633,170.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE Porrs, a citizen of Rumania, residing at Massena, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hooks and has particular reference to the construction of the bill portion thereof adapted for locking engagement withchain links usually employed in different forms of construction wherein rigging is required.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a chain hook wherein the bill portion of the hook is adapted for locking engagement with chain links, the body portion of the hook being longitudinally grooved to accommodate positioning of the chain links within the outer end of the hook bill, the bill being bifurcated to receive the spaced side bars of a chain link with the transversely positioned adjacent link prevented from passing through the hook bill.
With the above and other objects in view as the nature of the inventionpis better, understood the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a hook constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 is an end elevational view,
Figure 3 is an elevational View of the opposite end of the hook,
Figure 4 is a top plan view,
Figure 5 is a bottom plan view showing the longitudinal groove in the body of the hook extending through the bill portion thereof that is bifurcated,
Figure 6 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line VI-VI of Fig. 4 showing the body groove in the hook and the bifurcated bill, and j Figure 7 is a cross-sectional view taken on line VII-VII of Fig. 1.
The body 1 of the hook is flat, and relatively wide and long and has an eye 2 at one end thereof with which an end link of a chain is associated, the eye portion 2 being laterally offset as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 6 reducing the cross-sectional area of the hook at the eye end thereof.
The bottom face of the hook body 1 is longitudinally grooved as at 3 defining spaced side bars 4 as clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the groove 3 extending to the outer end of the body portion of the hook.
The outer end of each side bar 4 is of like construction and carries an outwardly and rearwardly directed bill 5 defining a pocket 6 in the crotch thereof, the spaced bills 5 overlying the adjacent side bars as shown in Fig. 5, the groove 3 being unobstructed as illustrated and permitting the insertion of the links of a chain into said groove from a position laterally thereof.
The type of hook disclosed in this application is capable of various uses such as hoisting and pulling devices or in rigging of any character, one end of a chain being secured. to the eye 2 while the other end of the chain may be secured to a suitable draft or pulling device. An object may be en closed by the chain, and the bill portions 5 of the hook moved into engagement with the desired links of the chain, one of the links being positioned between the hook bills 5 and resting in the groove 3 while the adjacent transversely positioned link engaging the crotch portions 6 of the hook bill to form an interlocking connection between the hook and chain.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is 1. In a hook of the type described, a relatively wide and long flat body having a chain receiving eye at one end, the bottom face of the body having a longitudinal groove therein defining spaced side bars and a bifurcated bill carried by the outer end of the body.
. 2. In a hook of the type described, a relatively wide and long fiat body having a chain receiving eye at one end, thebottom face of the body having a. longitudinal groove therein defining spaced side bars and a'hook bill carried by the outer end of each bar and separated by said groove.
3. In a hook of the type described, a
5 relatively Wide and long fiat body having a chain, receiving eye at one end, the bottom face of the body having a longitudinal groove therein defining spaced side bare and a hook bill carried by the outer end of each bar and alined with the carrying bar 10 and said bills being separated by the groove. In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
