CAB-UNLOADING APPARATUS.
vApplication filed.v August 39, 1920. Serial No.1406,960`.
To all @07mm t may concern."
Be itvknown that I, Oscan Bienne, citifi'" zen of the United States, lresidingat'- Pitts7 burgh, in the county of Allegheny and. State-1 of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new Iand useful Improvements in-Car-Unloading Apparatus, of which `,the following isa specification; y i
An object of my invention is to provide a new and improved car unloading system and apparatus therefor particularly designed for use in connection with bottom dumping railway freight cars.
Other objects of the present invention are,
to provide apparatus of the character speci-V fied adapted to be movedV along an ordinary railwa track or a switch trackan a aaratus designed to receive and support a loaded freightV car; yan apparatus having means for receiving material dumped from the freight car while said carl is positioned on said apparatus and for conveyingk the dumped material to a desired point or points along the sides of a track.
In the accompanying drawings which iln lustrate an application of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of an apparatus embodying my invention showing a bottom-dumping car positioned thereon;
Fig. 2 is a top plan;
Fig. 3, an end elevational view; and
Fig. 4, an enlarged detailview partly in elevation and partly in section, particularly showing the manner of supporting the conveyor belts, the section being taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3. 1
Referring to the drawings, 2 designates a bottom-dumping freight car of the usual Vtype having bottom-dumping means 3;V 4 designates a movable car-receiving structure constructed in accordance with my invention and designed to travel on an ordinary railway track or a switch track indicated at 5.
The car receiving structure 4 includes `a suitable car underframe 6, mounted on wheels 7. Carried on said underframing is a track 8 upon which the dump-car 2 is adapted to be positioned. Proiecting upwardly from the underframe of the car receiving structure 4 I provide a longitudinal and laterally extending framework 9, and disposed under the track 8 and suitably supported by the underfram'ing is a material receiving bin 10, or, if desirable, a series of bins may be employed. l
Bin 10 is arranged 'so that it will he 1ocated directly underthe dumping means 3 of the car 2, and is "preferably provide'dwith series of. spouts or guides 11, theffunction of the latter being` toy direct-the material adapted to be moved along on the main track or switch track 5, is a supplemental carreceiving struct-ure 12. Each structure 12 is mounted on wheels 13 and each is provided' with an inclined supplemental track 14 leadl ing from track 5 tothe track l8 of structure 4, whereby the car to be dumped may be transferred from said track 5 to track 8.V 15 designates coupling members adapted to connect thefend inclined structures 12 with the car-receiving structure 4.
Means are provided for transferring the material or materials from thereceiving binl y 10 to a point or points to a side of the track, and said means, as illustrated and as 'pre-v ferred,.include a plurality of belt conveyors 16. These belt conveyors fora portion of their lengths are carried on a vertically movable frame 17, said. frame at its innerend being pivotally secured to the underframe of structure 4 at the points 18, and 19 designates cables or ropesconnected with the other end of said frame. (These cables 19 extend from the outer end of frame 17y over she-aves or pulleys 2O and 21, the latter being mounted on the framcwork), to drums22. Drums 22 are carried on a shaft 23 and are rotated by means of a hand crank 24, or may be operated by a motor,vnot shown'.
The outer ends of the side membersof the frame V17 are joined bya shaft 25, `and mounted on this shaft are a series of spaced V apart belt pulleys 26 designed to `receive the respective conveyor belts 16. Frame 17 also by uprights 38A mounted on the car. underframing. l
It will be understood that the construc= tion illustrated and-described provides a unitary structure includingthemain car-re'- ceiving structure 4, the end structures lf2'and the material conveying means capable of being moved along the usual railwavftrack 'and positioned at any desired point. If desired,
the end structures as IWell as the conveying Y means may be disconnected from the main structure 'and mounted thereon for the purpose of transporting the sanne Where .it is desired to move the apparatus for `a considerable distance along a track.
, lo Y V provides va simple vand elicient mechanism'.
for permitting a loadedrcarto befquickly It Willyalso be noted that my invention paratus for unloading hopper 'cars coinpris` ing a car receiving structure-having Wheels thereon by fmeansof which it may be run along the saiditrack, Vsaid.;structure 4'having a track .thereon of the saine gauge as the trackl over which it is-.movable,a suppleably supported on saidr's't mentioned track. means on -the structure for receiving niat'erialV from Vthe hopperY cars, and laterally extending conveyors for discharging finaterialto the side ofthe'struc'turej In testimony whereof laix my v`signature in presence offtvvo Witnesses. y Y y Y OSCAR BEBER.
