Description

latented Sept. 4, 1923.
PATENT QFFQICE-f ALBERT ROMAINE TALLMAN, ,OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
GAS Cook.
Application rfiled February 9, 1921. `Serial No. ,443,596.1
To aZZieiomz' mag/concern.' f
Be it known that I, ALBERT R. TALLMAN, a citizen of the United btates, residing at lNashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Gas Cock, of which the following is a specification. n
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a cock, which may b e used on gas lines, although the cock, obviously,
may be used to control the flow of fluid ofany kind.
The invention aims to provide means whereby a rotation or' the valve of the cock will Y"be rendered somewhat difficult, to the end that the valve cannot be tampered with or closed readily, the construction being such, withal, that the valve may be rotated readily, at the hand of a person having a properly constructed wrench or key. s.
It is within theprovince of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility oi devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
l do not bind myself to the specific form depicted and described, since, within the` scope of what is claimed, a mechanic may work changes, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
ln the drawing Fgure 11 shows in top plan, a device constructed in accordance with the invention, the cap portion of the casing having been removed; Figure 2 is a likefview wherein the cap appears Vas an added de-y tail; Figure 3 is a side elevation, the cap being in section; Figure 1 is a section on'the line 4-4 of Figure 1; Figure 5 is a perspecL tive view ofthe wrench orkey.
The numeral 1 Vdenotes a casing comprising a body 2 having a neck 3provided with a notch l defining shoulders 5. A valve is journaledV in the body'2 and controls the passage otuid through the casing. The
valve comprises a Vtaperedmain member 6y having a stem 7 whereon anut 8 is threaded, a washer 9 beinginterposed between the nut and the body 2 of the valve casing.
'The nut'8 and the washer 9 are ofconi-k cal form, and for that reason, it'will be practically impossible to apply a tool to the lower end of the valve and rotate'thevalve.
The main member 6 of the valvehas a lat valve bodyy 6 and is j rovided at its edges with'inwardly extended ribsl2.
There is a seat 14 in the end of the valve member 6. A spindle 15 is carried by the member (3 and extends through the seat 14. A cover plate 16 is mounted to slide on the spindle 15 and has a reduced extension 17 enlarged as at 18 to engage with the ribs 12, the construction being such that thekcover plate is held by the iin or shell 11, for rotation with the valve. The cover plate 16 has outwardly projecting lugs 19. A compression spring 20 surrounds the spindle 15, one end of the spring being received in the seat ll, the other end of the spring engaging the cover plate 16.
`A cap 21 surrounds the neck 3 and is held thereon byAone or more securing elements 22. The cap may be considered as a part of thecasing 1. 1n theend of the cap 21 there is an opening or key hole 23 having a lateral extension 24. The plate 16 forms a closure for the key hole 23 and'is pressed against the end of the cap by the spring 20. Thelugs 19 on the cover plate 16 engage the end of the cap and space the cover plate far enough from the end of the cap so that yslate 16 being pressed inwardly and the spring 2O being compressed. When the key 25'is rotated, the bit 29 engages one or the other of the ribs 12 atthe ends of the 1in or L shell 11 on the vlave, rotation being imparted thus to the valve. lWhen the key 25 is withdrawn, the cover plate lassumes the position of Figure Il, and, since the cover plate `is assembled with the valve, for rof tation therewith, it will be yobvious that an unauthorized rotation "of the valve will be rendered diflicult.AVV y Y hlrclaimf- Y n j 1.*ln a Vdevice oi the class described, a
`casing having a key hole; a valve journaled in the casing and provided with a fin; a
vspindle `on the valve and alined with the key hole; a cover plate for the key hole, the cover plate being slidable on the spindle and being interengaged with the n against rotation independently of the valve, the
plate having lugs engaging the casing to hold the cover plate engaged with the iin;
5 and a. spring on the spindle and interposed between the valve an the Cover plete.
2. In e device of the class described, a
Casing having a key hole; a Valve ournaled in tlie Casing and provided With e fin; a
10 spindle on the valve and alined with the key liole; a cover plate for the key hole, the ooverplzitebeing slidable on the spindle and being interengaged with the n for rotation Witli tlie valve; and e spring on the spindle and interposed between the valve and the cover plate,
In testimony that l ela-ini the foregoing as my own, lieve hereto aliixed my signa*- ture.
