['5 PRO UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. TULL AND JAMES W. WESTON, OF WINDSOR, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,602, dated December 16, 1873; application filed August 16, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN W. TULL and JAMES W. WESTON, of Windsor, in the county of Shelby and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tub Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention is an improvement in the class.
of washing-machines formed of two or more rollers arranged to rotate in contact. The invention relates to an improved means of looking a sliding extension-piece attached to the bottom or bed piece of the roller-frame, said parts being provided with pins to enter the sides of the tub, as in other machines of this class.
Figure 1 represents a side view of the machine complete. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line as m. Fig. 3 is a view of the bottom of the extension-bed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the extension-bed. B is the extensionpiece, which is made adjustable on the bed by means of slots and screws, as seen in Fig. 3. O'represents metallic pins in the ends of the bed and the extension-piece, which enter holes in the sides of the tub when the bed is extended, and it is held in position by means of the cam-lever D, which is pivoted to the bed While the cam enters (when the lever is turned) a slot in the extension-piece, as seen in Fig. 1. E is the bed-roller, which revolves on pivots in the two sides or uprights F G. This roller is corrugated or fluted longitudinally, and it also has transverse grooves E. On its side, and attached to the bed, are shields H, which have tongues I, which enter the transverse grooves E and prevent the clothes from catching or clogging under the roller. J is the corrugated or fluted driving-roller, to which the power is applied by means of the crank K. The uprights F and G are slotted, as seen at L, and are connected together by a cross-piece, M. The driving-roller J revolves in the slots L L, and the journals N N extend through the uprights, and have each an elastic band or spring, 0, attached to the bottoms of the uprights by pins or screws, and connected with the journals by means of hooks P. Any desired degree of tension may be given these bands by twisting them; or it may be given by making the pins or hooks adjustable, as may be desired.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The slotted and sliding extension-piece B and cam-lever D, in combination With the bedpiece A and pins 0, as and for the purpose specified.
