Be it known that I, Josmrn J. .LANZIT, a
citizen of the Unitedtates,
Angeles,
useful Improvements in Paper Pails, of
which the followin is a specification.
This inv ention re ate's to paper pails, and has for its object the provision of improved olosure means for the same Whi0h may be readily fastened. 1
The invention will be readily understo0d from the following description of thev accompanying dra.wings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the pail is folded.
F ig. 2 is a perspective view of the pail formed from the blank and v showing the closure flaps before engaged in fastening position.
F ig. 3 is a similar view showing the clo sure flaps engaged in fastening osition.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a, modified form of the retaining strip secured 150 one of the closure flaps.
The blank from which the pail is formed may be of usual construction including bottom 1, side wal1s 2 and corner members 3 between adjacent side Walls and adapted,
when the .side Walls am folded upwardly, to be folded over the outside of an opposito pair of side Walls, as clearly shown in F ig. 2. A usua1 handle W1I'e 4 is inserted through the overlapping ends ofthese corner pieces and through the side wallsfor retaining the parts in folded position.
The upper edges 0f the side Walls are provided with extensions 5 forming closure flaps for the pail. One pair of opposite 410 elosure flaps are bent along lines 6 als the upper edgesof the side Walls so as to overlie 0116 another in order to fonn closure means.
Of the other pair of opposite closure flaps, one 0f the same is also bent along 1ine 6, while the opposite closure flap has a tongue 7 cut from the middle portion thereof and projecting beyond the side Wall. The flap surrounding the tongue is baut along 1ine 6, but the tongue forms a continuation of the side wa11 with no bend provided at the upper edge of the latter.
When closing the pail, the first mentioned pair 0f flaps are bellt over one, another, a5
resi diilg i?= I OS Z in the coun ty of Los Angeles anc1 5 State of California, have invented new and tongue 7 cut therefroni is phenbent]down wa 1gdly uponthe first pai r 0f closure flaps so as to leenze tonge7 projectingf pwalrdly This tongue is provide'd Wih an opening 8 aqd tbe oppdsite closure flap is provided w1th a, retainingmeans adapted toengage said opening and shown as a strip 9 of readily bendable material secured to the flap and projectingbeyond the same. After the flap having the tongue formed therein has been bent to closed position, the opposite flap carrying strip 9 is bent downwardly with the strip received in openin g 8. The parts a1e so arranged that when 13h(-) flap ca'rrying strip 9 has been bent all the way down with the strip 9 through the opening 8, the tongue 7 Will be d1avvn inwardly 2Lnd band the same along dovvnwardly so as to the 1ine of the upper edge of the side Wall, when the strijp 9 projectir'1g through 0pe11- ing 8 is reversely bent 1'1pon the flap carrying the same so as 150 fasten the fla'ps in closed position.
By providing the upwatrdly. projecting tongue adapted to be engaged by aprojecting strip of the opposite Closure flap, the pair of closure flaps may be readily engaged, and when secured together with the v.
tongue bent d0wnwardly Will forma positive fastening means for the closure flaps of the pzul. 1 7
In the modification 0f the invention illustrated in Fig. 41-, the, strip carried by o ne of the closure flaps 5 and adaptedto be received in opening 8 is shown as an extension 9 0f the flap provided with side portions 12 adapted to be bent down up0n extension 9 so that the latter may be readily projected through opening 8. The exte11sion is then folded back pon itself and the side flaps 12 are unfolded so as 130 form a locking tongue which W111 be held in locked position extending through opening 8. The outer end of extension 9 may be tapered as shown at 13 and the outer ends of side portions 12 oppositely inclined as shown at 14, so that when the side portions 12 are folded upon the extension, the tongue Will have, a tapering end which may be readily projected through opening 8.
Various changes may be made without depar!zing from 1;.hpirit of th imention :as cla1me L 15 bot-tom,
over the tongue.
Nhat is c1aimed is:
1. A pai1 folded from a blank forming a bottom, four sides und folded co rner pieces, opposite extension closure fiaps bent t0 over- 1ie 0ne another und opposite flaps adapted so be pulled down and overlapped a tongue cut from one of the last mentioned flaps and extending to the side Wall 0f the pail and having a perforation, and a strip secu1ed 130 the other one of the last C1OSUI flaps and adapted t0 pass under the tongue and upwardly through the qpening and be bent 2. A pai1 folded from a blank forming a four sides, and folded, corner pieces,
closure flaps bent t0 overlie one another, 0p posite flaps adapted to be pu11ed down and overlapped, a tongue cut from one 0f the last mentioned fiaps forming an extension 0f 0ne of the sides adapted t0 be folded at its lower end and having a pefforation therein, and a strip secured to one of the flaps and adapted toproject through the said perforation and 10ck the tongue in folded positi'on whn bent back upon itself, whereby the closure flaps may be folded one at a time.
In testimony w hereof l have signed my name to this spec1fication.
JOSEPH J. LANZIT.
