Yu. v. HAAS.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Di VID Y. HAAS, OF I-IEPLER, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT INMACHINS FOR SHAVING LEATHER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144.273, dated November 4, 1873; application filed August 30, 1873.
the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts.
Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of the machine taken on the line .t x of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the bed or foundation of the machine. This bed is provided with two transverse bars, B, which have projecting feet C, by means of which the bed may be screwed down to a bench or table, and iirmlyheld in place. D is an adjustable frame, which is hinged to the bed at two points, E. F is a roller, which is supported on central journals by lugs G G on the top of the bed, so that it freely revolves, and may be removed when the frame D is raised. H is a tongue7 attached to the under side of the frame D, whichpasses down through the bed-plate when the frame D is closed down, through the lower portion of which is a mortise. I is a horizontal slide, which is supported by the transverse bars B, which is provided with an inclined bar, J, which works through the mortise in the tongue H. K is a gage, made adjustable on the side of the slide I by means of the thumb screw L. This gage strikes the front transversebar B, and thereby limits the back motion of the lide. As the slide is pushed forward it will be seen that the frame D will be drawn down. M is the knife, attached to the top of the frame D by the screws N N. The leather to be shaved is drawn over the roller, under the knife, and
the knife is adjusted to cut or shave the leather to the required thickness by adjusting the bar J, so that it will hold the frame, and, consequently, the knife in the right position. O is a presser-bar, attached to the springs P P, on the frame D. This bar is to press the leather down upon the roller, and is made to press 1(1iore or less by means of the adjusting-screws By a proper adjustment of the inclined bar J the knife. may be set to shave leather to any desired thickness. Y
When the knife is nearly in contact with the roller, the frame D will rest upon the lugs G and bed of the machine.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A machine for shaving leather composed of the bed A, adjustable frame D, roller F, and presser-bar O, arranged to operate substan` tially as shown and described.
2. In combination, with roller F, the hinged frame D carrying knife M, and having mortised tongue H, of the slide I, provided with the inclined bar J, all as shown-and described, to operate as specified.
j 3. The tongue H and bar J, in combination with the slide I, as and for the purposes described.-
4. The gage K, in combination with the slide I, for the purpose described.
