GRUTCH,
Application filed July 29,
To all 111710122 it may concern:
Be it known that I, Osoiin A. Yonnennn, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State oi New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Crutches, Etc, Tips, oi which the following is a specilication.
in the use of crutches more or less jar is imparted to the body ot the user through ordinary use and considerable discomfort and oftentimes physical ills result therefrom.
The object of my said invention is to providea pneumatic tip for the lower end oi? the crutch of a construction which will cushion the jar and permit of inflation to any degree desired according to the weight or preference of the user, and which will serve not only as a cushion to absorb the and strain upon the person using the crutch but will also impart more or less elasticity or spring action to the crutch; and also one that will furnish a surface which will adhere when brought in contact with the pavement, floor, or ground, and prevent slipping, thus lending to the user a sense of security in the use of the crutch as well as providing means that makes its use more comfortable and less injurious, all as will be hereinafter more iully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a crutch, the lower end of which is armed with one of my improved tips or pneumatic cushions, and Figure 2, a central section through such pneumatic tip or cushion.
In the drawings, the parts marked A represent the crutch proper and B the tip or cushion.
The crutch is or may be of any appropriate form or construction and instead of a crutch, as shown, may, of course, be in the form ot a cane if desired, or an artificial leg (peg leg).
The tip or cushion B is of bulb shape, hollow, and preferably provided with a valve 10 in one side for attachment with an air pump for the purpose or" inflating the same.
Said valve is of the ordinary type used in time, one.

around the lower end of the crutch, or
rather to be expanded over the end of the crutch so as to become firmly fixed thereon. The hollow tip, including the socket, is preterably ot rubber and may be readily expanded or stretched over the end of the crutch for the purpose stated. The lower part of the bulb B is preferably formed with a roughened surface 13, as shown, to adapt the same to adhere to whatever kind of surface it is placed in contact with, and thus support the user against slipping and resulting accidents.
As will be understood, the bulb B may be inflated by an ordinary bicycle pump tlu'ougfh the valve 10 in the usual manner and to obtain the degree of resistance desired. some users may desire a very hard tip and in such instance. it will be inflated to a high degree. while other users may prefer a soft tip and the decree of inflation will he c'uluted accordingly. .rlaving thus fully described my said in vention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A crutch or the like provided with a pneumatic tip consisting of a hollow substantially spherical bulb formed with a socket extendingtherein to receive the end of the crutch and having a horizontal wall separating the socket from the hollow portion 0?? the tip the lower outer spherical surface 3 h .i roughened, and a valve for die said hollow bulb, substantially as set orth.
in witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at New York, New York this 20th day of July, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty-one. OSCAR ANDREW YOUNGREN. [1,. S.]
