CHARLES RTLEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COLLAPSIBLE CONTAINER.
To all whom itma concern:
Be it known t at 1, CHARLES RILEY, a former subject of the King of' England, who has foresworn his allegiance to said Kingof England and declared his intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, and therefore is not now a citizen or subject of any country, and is a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Containers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a collapsible contamer, so constructed that it may be folded to permit packing or storing of a large number of such containers within a very small space, the folding thereof providing a frictlonal locking means. Each of the containers may be made readyfor use by unfolding same, and when filled and closed, will remain closed by reason of frictional engagement between its ends.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming apart of this specification, and 111 which,
Fig. 1 'is a top view of the blank from I which the container is made;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the assembled container;
,Fig.3.is a view of the container when folded.
The container is preferably made up from a single blank of any suitable material,
preferably cardboard, such as that shown in Fig. 1. The container when assembled 18' provided with a bottom 1 having foldable opposite sides 2 and 3, each preferably having foldable wings 4 and 5 attached to their inner ends, and a front end 6. The end 6 preferably is provided with flaps 7 and 8.
The top 9 also preferably has foldable sides 10 and 11, and a front end 12 having fia s 13 and 14.
hinged back piece 15 connects the bottom 1, and top 9. The flaps 7 and 8 of the end-6 are preferably fastened to the sides 2 and 3 respectively by pasting same together or by inserting pins 16 therethrough and the flaps 13 and 14 are similarly fasating the use of string. tape, etc.
tened to the sides 10 and 11 of the top 9 V as shown. The box may be folded by bendmg the wings 4 and 5 inwardly against the walls 2 and 3 respectively; then pressmg the sides and wings onto the bottom 1 the end 6 being pressed outwardly and folded as shown in F ig. 3. The top 1s sim ilarly folded by pressing the sides 10 and 11 onto same and folding the end 12 in the same manner as the end 6. The folded box 1S flat and would occupy very little space, when storing a large number of such boxes at the same time, being readily prepared for use by simplyunfolding the sides and wings. The box when unfolded will have when same is filled and closed the outwardl bulging ends will frictionally engage eac other and hold the box closed, thereby o lfirli- Q wings 4 and 5 are pre ably slightly in clined toward the sides 2 and 3 respectively, as this construction prevents the sides 2 and 3 from bulging outwardly and also causes the back 15 to fit tightly against the sides.
A box constructed in accordance with my.
It may also be manufactured in great quantities at small expense.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to' the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what T claim as new and desire-to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A foldable box comprising top and bottom sections, hingedly connected together by a common wall, each of said sections having foldable side walls thereonand side walls, said top section being receivable.
in said bottom section; and inwardly turned wings on said bottom side walls adaptedin closed position of the box to be engaged by said top section to prevent lateral movement ofsaid side walls.
2. A box comprising top and bottom sections, hingedly connected together by a common wall, each of said sections having front and sidewalls thereon, said top sectlon being receivable in said bottom section; and inwardly turned movable wings on the inner ends of said bottomside walls adapted in closed position of the box to be engaged by said top section to prevent lateral move ment of said side walls.
3. A box comprising top and bottom sections, hingedly connected together by a common waiLeach of said sections having side and front walls, said top section being' receivable in said bottom section; and inwardly turned wings on the inner ends of said bottom side walls having their upper edges oppositely inclined and adapted in closed position of the box to be engaged by said top section to prevent lateral movement of said side walls.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES RILEY.
