JAMES M. BRADY, OF DUBOIS, PENNSYLVANIA.
LICENSE Application filed une 15,
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, JAMES M. BRADY, a citizen of the United States, residing at D'ubois, in the county of Clearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have inventedv certain new and useful Improvements in License Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holding devices for cards or tags and is designed more especially as a holding means fora hunters license card. It is customary to carry such cards upon the outside of the hunting coat or jacket where they will be plainly exposed to view, and heretofore various crude .devices have been employed for holding the cards in place. Such devices have been unsatisfactory for various reasons; they have not generally been adapted to. protect the card from the elements nor have they usually been constructed to effectually protect the card from mutilation. The present invention has as'one of its primary objects to provide a holding device or pocket for such a card either attached to the hunting coat or jacket at the time of manufacture or sold as a separate article to be attached by the purchaser and which device will'so house the card as to effectually protect the same from the elements and from contact with obstructions such as tree branches and the like which would be liable to mutilate the card.
Another object of the invention is to pro.- vide a device for the purpose stated so constructed that it may be readily attached to the garment and likewise readily detached therefrom so as to permit of the introduction or removal of the license card, the invention further contemplating the construction of the device in such a manner as to prevent loss or displacement of the card after it has been placed in the pocket.
'In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of one form of the device attached to a hunting jacket;
Fig. 2 is a detail horizontal sectional view onthe line 2..2 of Fig. 1; V
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 illustrating a modified'form of the invention.
That form of invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings is adapted to be at-. tached or applied to the coat or acket at the timev of manufacture, whereas that; form illustrated in Fig. 4 is deslgned mojrepar- HOLDER.

chaser. Except for the attaching means, the
two forms are substantially identical and in each instancethe device comprises a pocket which is indicated in general by the numeral 1 and which may be formed from any suitable material such for example as leather. This'pocket comprises a back 2 and a front 3 and the two members of the pocket are united along their upper and lower margins by lines of stitching indicated by the numeral 4. The ends or lateral portions of the two members, however, are left mutually disconnected so that the license card, which is indicated by the numeral 5, may be inserted into the pocket through either end thereof. The front 3 of the pocket is provided with a sight opening 6 through which the face of the card may be displayed, and a transparent. pane 7 of ising glass, celluloid, or the like, is secured within this opening so as to protect the card and yet leave the same visible. w
The supporting and attaching means for the pocket 1, in that form of the invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and, 3, comprises a strap 8 which is stitched or otherwise secured, as at 9, at a point preferably midway between its ends to any suitable portion of the garment as, for example, the back, where such license cards or tags are ordinarily worn, and the portions of the strap at the opposite sides of its attached intermediateportion are first passed through slots 10 formed in the back2 of the pocket and into said pocket and thence through other slots 11 formed in the said back of the pocket and to the exterior thereof. The said portions of the-strap are then passed through slots 12 and 13 formed in the lateral portions of the back 2 and front 3,'respectively, of said pocket, and the ends of the strap are provided with snap fastening elements 14 engageable with companion elements 15 securedto the garment. The strap 8 extends across the garment as will be evident by reference to Fig. 1 and therefore extends across the pocket 1, and
inasmuch'as the endportions of the strap teners comprising the elements 14 and 15 of course permits of ready attachment and detachment of the pocket and supporting strap,
and it will be understood that the license card or tag may be removed and inserted through either end of the pocket by'merely withdrawing that end portion of the strap 8' which is passed through the slots 12 and 13 at said end of the pocket. Of course, the reinsertion of the strap end through the slots will serve to again close the end of the pocket and prevent loss or displacement of vthe card or tag.
In that, form of the invention shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, the strap corresponding tothe strap 8 is indicated in generalby the numeral 16 and comprises an intermediate section 17 and endsections 18, which latter sections are stitched or otherwise secured by the purchaser of the article, to the garment as indicated by the numeral 19. The members of a snap fastener 20 are secured to the free ends of the sections 18 and to the ends'ofthe section 17 of the strap and provide means whereby the strap may be temporarily disconnected from the garment substantially in the same manner and for the same purpose as beforepointed out.
From the foregoing description. of the invention it will be seen that there is provided a card or tag holder which will effectually protect the card or tag disposed therein and which will prevent loss or displacement of the card or tag and yet permit of its ready removal and replacement.
Having thus described the invention, what 7 is claimed as new is:
1. A device of the class described, comprising a pocket having a mouth, the walls of the pocket adjacent the mouth having openings therein, an attaching strap for attaching the ocket to a garment, the strap being inserta le through the said openings to retain withinthe pocket a card or the like inserted therein, and means for separably connecting the extending portion of the strap to thegarment,
- v 2. A device of "the class described comprising a pocket having a mouth, the walls of the pocket being provided adjacent, the the rear wall of the pocket being also provided with spaced mouth with openings,
openings, and a strap attachable to a garment and inserted through the v last-mentioned openings whereby to support the pocket, an
end portion of the strap being insertable also through the first-mentioned openings where- 'by to retain in the pocket a card or the like inserted therein.
3. A device of the class described comprising a pocket having a mouth,'the walls of the pocket being provided adjacent the mouth withopen1ngs, the rear wall of the pocket being also provided with spaced 0penings, a strap attachable to a garmentand inserted through the last-mentioned openings whereby to support the pocket, an end portion of the strap being insertable also through the first-mentioned openings whereby to retain in the pocket a card or the like inserted therein, and means for separably connecting the last-mentioned end of the strap with the garment.
1 4. A device of the class described comprising a pocket having front and back walls, the back wall being provided with slots in its intermediate portion and with other slots near its opposite margins, both the front and back walls of the'pocket beat said margins beingmutually unattached whereby the pocket is provided with a mouth at either side, and an' attaching strap for the pocket threaded through the slots inthe back wall of the pocket and having its end portions threaded through .the last-mentioned slots in both. the back and front walls whereby to constitute means for retaining in place a card or the like inserted in said .pocket.
5. A device of the, class described comprising a pocket-having front and back walls,
' the back wall being provided with slots in its intermediate portionv and with other slots near its opposite margins, both the front and-back walls of the pocket being provided with slots adjacent the said opposite margins, said walls of thepocket at said margins bein mutually unattached whereby the pocket 1s provided with-a mouth at either side, an attaching strap for the pocket threaded through the slots in the back wall of the pocket, and having its end portions threaded through the: last tmen' tioned slots in both the back and front walls whereby to constitute means for .retaining in place .a card or the like inserted in said pocket,'and means for: separably connecting eitherend of saidistrap with a garment.
