Description
UNITED STATES PA'IENT OFFICE.
SHERMAN TAYLOR, OF WYMORE, NEBRASKA.
DOOR.
Applicaton filed March 14, 1921. Serial No 452,054,
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known tl1at I,SHEBMAN TAYLOR, a citizen of the nited States, residin at Wymore, in the county of Gage and tate of Nebraska, have invented a new and useul Door, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to doors primarily designed for use in connection with doors of vaults and the like although it is to be understood that the improvement aan he applied to various kinds of doors.
One of the objeots of the invention is to provide a door with a combined sight and ventilating opening whioh is normally closed by a plug, this plug being removable solely by a person behind the door so that should said person be locked within a vault it becomes possible for him to remove the plug and thus not only secure the necessary fresh air but also gives him a view of the ex terior surroundings.
A further object is to provide a plug 01 closure the outer fase of which is flush. with the corresponding fan-e of the door so that sad plug is not noticeable from the outs1e.
A still further object is to provide simple and eflicient meahs for fastening the plug in place so that it oannot be removed except by pressure 'rom back of the door.
With the foregoing and other objects in view whieh will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter descriloed and claimed it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, ohanges in the precise emloodiment of the invention shown can be made without de parting from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the pre ferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is an elevat-ion of a portion of the back face of a door and showing the present improvernents combined therewith.
Figure 2 is a section on line 22, Figure 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a portion of a door in which is provided an opening 2 which is frusto-conical, the said opening tapering toward the back or inner face of the door.
In this opening is reniovably seated a plug 3 the outer end of whieh lies flush with the outer surface of the door and aan he finished so as to oorrespond therewith and not be noticeable from without. The inner end of the plug is provided with an eXtension 4 having a11 annular groove 5 and this groeve is adapted to receix e opposed walls of a key hole slot 6 whioh is formed in a locking plate 7. Said plate is adapted te bear against the back face of the door 1 and when in engagement with the extension 41 will obviouslyhold the plug 3 seurely in position.
Should a person be looked in a vault either aceidentally or otherwise it is possible f0 him to push the plate 7 upwardly and re mo"e it from the extension 1. By then pounding on said extension the plug 3 will be dislod ed and will fall outwardly frornthe opening 2. Thus fresh air aan pass into the vault and at the Same time the occupant of the vault will have a view of thearea in front of the vault. 'The opening also constitutes a loop hole through which the oocupant of the vault aan fire at lourglars who may have olosed the door.
What is claimed is 1. The oombination with a door having an inwardly tapered opening therein, of a tapered plug normall3 se ated in theopening and having an extension at its small end projeeting trom the back or inner faee of the door and means engaging said extension for holding the plug against withdrawal from the opening.
2. The combination with a door hawing an inwardly tapered opening therein of a frusto-conical plug removably seated within the opening and having its large faoe flush with the outer face of the door, an extension upon the small end of the plug having an annular groo"e and mans detaehably seated by gravity in the groove for hold ing the plug against removal from the opemng.
In testimony that I claim the foregi ng as my own, I haie hereto aflixed my s1gnature in the presence of two w1tnesses.
SHERMAN TAYLOR.
