Description

} F. C. HAMMAR. PROTECTING DEVICE FOR THE EDGE OF BUTCHERS K NIVES.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 3.1922.
Patented Aug. 15, 1922.
ful Improvements in and Relatin rnrrror CORNELIUS. Harri A3, or Gotr'rENBonG. swnnnn.
PROTECTING 'nnvronron THEnnenorjnn rcnnrtsi knives. f
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I; Fni'rlor CORNELIUS.
HAM AR, subject of the King of Sweden,
residing at No. 30 Linngatan, Gottenborg,
Sweden, have invented certain new and useto Protecting Devices for the Edge of. utchers Knives, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to protect ing devices for the sharp. edge of butchers knives and particularly to such devices, in
which the edge protecting member is held in proper position to the knife-blade by means of a pin or the like, passing through holes in the knife-blade as well as. in the edge protecting member. v The invention has for its principal object to provide an edge protecting device of the class mentioned, which will enable an easy the knife-blade when the. blade is tof be ground. 1 I Other objects of the invention will be made clear by the 'followingdescription.
"The invention is characterized broadly therein', that either the hole provided in the edge protecting member or the corresponding hole in the knife-blade has such a shape in relation to the pin cooperating with said holes, that when the protecting member is swung out about said pin from its operative position to have the edge of the knife-blade free for sharpening said pin remains stationary in relation to the knife-blade or to the protectingmember as the case may be but is revolved in relation to the opposite member. Besides that the pin bears against the outer side of the last mentioned memher by means of a head of such a shape and size in relation to the hole in said. member, that, since the edge protecting member has been swung to a certain angle to the knife-blade, the head of the pin can be pulled out through said hole, so that the protecting member becomes released from the blade.
Referring now to the drawing illustrating one embodiment of the invention Fig. 1 shows the knife with the protecting member in side elevation, Fig. 2 a portion of the knife-blade with the edge protecting memher in position to be removed from the blade, Fig. 3 a portion of the knife-blade looked at from a side opposite to the side shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 4 a section on the line AA in a section on the line B-B iniFig. 1.
V UNITED STATES messi, 'o rrlitf-t;.f
Specification'of was Patenti mt a 'a mg; i Application filed July 3, 1922. seria 'no. 5721567." if
Fig. '1,'-Figl 5 a view of adetailand Figs h In the drawing 1 denotes a 'knife bladghf which in" ordinary wayby meansof screws 2 is. fastened to the handle Tothe one flat side of the knife-blade l'there is attached fan edge protecting member at such,
that when in operative position (Figl'l') said member leavesonl-y. a narrow rim of the edge of the'blade luncovered. According to the present invention the knife-blade 1- adjacent to its outerend is provided with an oblong hole '6 and the edgeprotectin'g member with a corresponding hole 8".of ahole" 6. Tothe edge protecting member'4 there is by means of ascrew"7 fastened a similar shape 'andforming an 'angle'tothe pinor bolt 9,-wh-ich passes through" the holes .6 and 8 and is formed with an oblonghead 10 of such asize, that, jwhen"turned into-a proper position, thefhead. can pass through the .hole' 6 and afterfbei'ng 'rotat'edsome quarter-of a turn can be disposedftransher as shown'in Figs; 3*and. 4;, thereby versely across the hole don the side 'of the i securing the member 4 to the knife-blade '1." 1 Due to the fact, that the length'dii-ecti'on of.
the hole 8 is disposed. somewhat perpendicutecting member 4 can be withdrawn *from larlyto the edge of the knife, theedge prothe edge 5 inwardlyruponthe blade when the 'edgehas been worn off to a certainex tent and consequently the edge protecting;
member always can' be adjus ted to assume'a proper position in a suitable' distanceapart fromthe edge; The pin 9 is provided with a portion 11 ofsomewhatthe same width. I
.a's tlie hole 6, which portion prQjectsflinto the hole 6 such, that' when the memberids swung about the screw7, alsotthe pine with the head 10 will be turned the sam'e angle.
Between thefhead .12 of the strewn, which head is provided with a'notch 18"in order to enable the revolving of the screw by;means of a screw-driver or the like, and the member 4 there is provided a washer 14 with a larger diameter than the width of the hole 8 to prevent the screw head from passing.
through the hole 8.
member a as shown in Fig. 1 is disposed in a recess 15 in the handle 3 and is retained v 1105 The opposite endof the edge protecting said end of the member 42 bears against the of a disc 17, which is fastened eccen trically to a pin 18 passing through the handle 3 and the recess (see Fig. 6).
The device operates as follows: v When the edge protecting member 1 is to be removed in order to enable the grinding of the knife-edge, said member is swung from the operative position shown in Fig. 1 some 90 degrees into the position shown in Fig. 2. The head 10 of the pin 9, which in the first mentioned position of the member 4- assumes the positionshown in Fig. 3 thereby securing the edge protecting member to the knife-blade, because of theportion ll projecting into the hole 8 of the member 4 partakesin the said movement of the member 4, so that the head 10 in the position of the member 4 shown in Fig. 2 is positioned straight before the hole 6 in the knife-blade. In such a position the head 10 can be passed through the hole 6 and thus the member 4 easily removed.
Since the grinding of the-knife-blade has; been finished the edge protecting member is placed in position on the blade in an opposite order and finally is swung to the operative position according to Figs. 1 and 8.
l/Vhenthe knife-blade by the grinding has been worn off in certain degree the member 4' is pushed farther in on the blade,
which is enabledxby the cooperation between the inwardly directed oblong hole 8 .and the eccentric disc 17, which then for the adjustment of the member 4 becomes turned back in the requisite degree.
The device described has also the advantage, that the, edge protecting member will be particularly firmly secured to the knife-blade in the proper position to the edge.
,Though-I have here above spoken about the hole 6 in the blade as the hole, through which the member 4 can be withdrawn 1 want to explain, that I do not wishto limit myself to exactlysuch an arrangement, but the scope of this invention includes also a reverse arrangement of the holes Gand 8, so, that the screw head 10 can be placed in position through the hole 6 and the member 4.removed by means of the ,hole 8.
What I claim is:
1. A protecting device for the edge of butcher s knives comprising a protecting .tie'nber provided on. the knife-blade, said member held in proper position upon the knife-blade means of a pin passing through holes in the knife blade as well as in the edge protecting member, either of said holes having such a shape in relation to the pin, that when the edge protecting member is swung about the pin out of its operative position for the sharpening of the knife-blade, said pin remains stationary in relation to the one of said members but is revolved in relation to the opposite memand said pin having a head, which s against the last mentioned member, and has such ashape and size in relation to the hole in said member, that when the protecting member is swung out from its operat ve position to a certain angle to the knifebiade, said pin head can pass througi 'h said hole for the purpose to enable to'said handle, and said spring adapted to retain the one end of said protecting member when in operative position.
eh-A protecting device for the edge of butchers knives comprising an edge protecting member attached to the blade of the knife by means of. a pin passing througil oblong holes in said blade and edge protecting member, a handle for the knife, a spring. provided adjacent to said handle and zooperating with the adjacent end of said edge protecting member, so as to hold said end in position, said end bearing against a rotatable eccentric, and said oblong holes iirovided such, that by the rotation of said disc and the displacement of said protecting member alongeither of said holes, said protecting member is adjusted to the proper distance from the edge of the knife.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRlTlOF CORNELIUS HAMMAR.
