IMPROVEMENT IN CA RRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,531, dated September 2, 1873 application filed May 13, 1873.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE K. TIOHENOR, of Wayland, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a carriage, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my carriage with the wheels on the front side removed. Fig. .2 shows the hind connection of the carriage-box, and Fig. 3 shows the front connection of the same. 7
A represents the front axle with wheels B B, and A is the hind axle with wheels B B. O 0 represent the shafts, which are secured on the front axle A, and at or near the inner ends of the shafts are formed or attached loops or projections in which the front spring D is suspended by means of leather ormetal links I) b, as shown in Fig. 3. The fifth-wheel d is attached upon the center of the spring D,
and the front end of the carriage-body E piv oted on the same by the king-bolt e. The hind end of the carriage-body is in like manner suspended by means of leather or metal links b b from circular braces h h attached to the hind axle A and to the reaches G G, the said links b being attached in the ends of a bar, f, and this bar connected with the carriage-body by the springs H H. This arrangement allows of an end movement of the springs and also of a side movement or swing. The reaches G G are attached to the hind-axle A and their front ends bolted directly to the carriage-body E.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A l. The combination of the carriage-body E, spring D, links b b, fifth-wheel d, and the shafts O O, as and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination of the carriage-body E, springs H H, barf, links I) I), braces h h, and hind axle A, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
