T. HYATT. Building-Blocks.
Patented September 2,1873.

UNITED STATES ATEN'I OFFICE.
THEODORE HYATT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUILDING-BLOCKS.
. Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,475, dated September 2, 1873; application filed August 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE HYATT, of New York city, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful'Improvements in Building-Blocks; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my improved building-block, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross-section of the same.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each figure.
The design of my invention is to produce a building-block of or from plastic material which, when completed, shall possess the elements of strength, durability, light weight, and cheapness; to which end it consists in a building-block composed of plastic material, consisting of asbestus combined with earthy matter, formed over and within a frame of wire gauze or reticulated sheet metal, and either with or without central openings, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a frame constructed of or from wire-gauze or reticulated sheet metal, and having, preferably, arectangular form, with open ends. Upon, within, and around the frame A is placed plastic material B, consisting of asbestus combined with earthy matter, which, by a mold or other suitable means, is given such size and shape exteriorly as to form a buildingblock having the required dimensions.
If desired, the central portion of the block may be provided with a series of longitudinal openings, 0, by which means the weight of said block will be reduced without material decrease of its strength. By making said openings of a uniform size, and properly locating them within each block, they may be caused (when the blocks are in position within a wall) to-coincide with and form continuations of the openings within contiguous blocks, and thus make a substantially hollow wall.
The block thus constructed possesses great strength and durability, has less weight than ordinary building material, is easily and cheap- 1y constructed, and is entirely proof against either fire or dampness.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new is- A building-block composed of plastic material, consisting of asbestus combined with earthy matter, formed over and within a frame of wire-gauze, or its equivalent, and either with or without central openings, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of August, 1873.
THEODORE HYATT.
