Be it known that l, Brnotrn A. Knrcirrir, a citizen of "he United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to lamps and an object or" the invention is to provide a combination lamp and easel which. is attractive in appearance, and in which a single support is provided for supporting a picture frame and a lampsocket and bulb of ap proved construction, said picture frame being supported in position so that part of the light rays will be deflected from the lamp upon the picture.

A further object of this invention is to provide, in a lamp structure as specifietha lamp socket support which is provided with spaced clamping legs for assisting in clamping the backing of the picture into the frame and which is attached to the support of the lamp structure.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a portable combined easel and lamp which may be hung from the backot a chair, headboard of a bed or analogous article of furniture for directing light rays to any desired place and one which may also be suspended from a nail or analogous support if desired.

Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description and in the accompanying drawings wherein: r

Referring more particularlyto the drawthe combined lamp and easel comprises support 1 which is formed of wire of any suitable gauge and is first doubled upon itself and bent to provide a laterally extending loop 2 at its upper end, the portions of the lengths of wire adjacent to said loop being twisted together as shown at 3 while a short distance downwardly from the twisted together portions they diverge providing diverging bracing legs -lwhich are bent inwardly and laterally to proride a base while the ends of the wires are retiirned and twisted about the lower terminals of the bracing legs l shown at A support 7 for the socket S is provided which-is formed of a piece of flat sheet metal bent to provide a cylindrical gripping portion 9 which engages about the twisted portions 3 of the wire oi? which the support 1 is formed adjacent to the loop 2 and it also comprises a flat pla-te 10 which engages against the rear side of the picture frame 11 as clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing. Tongues 12 are formed upon the plate 10 at its opposite ends and are bent'm wardly for engaging against the rea'r'sun' face of the backing 13 of the picture I l for-securely supporting the picture backing 13, picture 14; and glass 15 in position in the frame 11. The terminals of the tongues 12 are rolled outwardly as shown at 16 to permit the picture backing 13 to he slipped in position beneath the tongues without marring the backing 13. A horizontal supporting plate 17 is formed upon the sup-- port 1 and it .18 provided with an opening 18 which receives theretln'ougi the ferrule 19 on the lamp socket 8, engaging against the under surf-ace of the lamp socket as clearly shown in Fi gs. 2 and 6 of the drawing for supporting the lamp socket 8 from the support 1. The lamp socket 8 may be of any approved switch socket type and it may have any desired type of incandescent bulb, as indicated at 20, screwed therein in the usual manner. A flexible cord 21 of the usual type used in table or portable lamps, is provided for conducting the necessary electric currents to the socket 8 for energizing the bulb '20 and it is understood that this cord may be oi any desired length and may carry any approved type of plugconnection to permit connection of the lamp bulb with an energizing source. The plate 10 is attached to the frame 11 by screws or analogous fastening devices 22 which extend through the loop 2 at its ends and through suitable openings in the plate 10 into the frame ll.

As clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing the picture frame 11 and support 1 extend at acute angles to each other while the lower edge of the frame is preferably in the same plane with the base 5 so that the picture frame 11 and support 1 co-act in supporting the combined lamp and easel structure when supported upon a flat surface.

Owing to the particular arrangement of the support 1 and picture frame 11 the combined lamp and easel structure will readily lend itself for use as a bracket lamp as indicated in Fig. 7 of the drawing where it is supported from the back of a chair,headboard of a bed or analogous support as indicated at A. When it supported in this manner the bracing legs -it will engage over the top edge of the support A while the forward edge of the base 5 will engage against the rear surface of, the support and the frame 11 will engage the forward edge of the support A. By slight adjustment of the combined lamp and easel structure it may be supported at any desired angle rela tive to the support A within certain limits and will, therefore, permit a person toadjust the lamp to satisfy his particular need.

The base 5 is constructed so that the lamp may be hung over a nail or analogous sup port as indicated at B in Fig. 8 of the drawing at which time the combined lamp and easel structure will be supported at right angles to the wall or other support which carries the support B. When suspended by a suitable support as shown at B the base 5 and the lower edge of the frame 11 will engage the side of the support to which the suspended support B is attached and preveiit vibratory movement of the lamp structure. A shade 23 of any desired style or type may be provided to add to the aesthetic value of the combined lamp and easel.

The lower edge of the backing 13 is re tained in the frame 11 by one or more confining pins or rods 24, one end of which is inserted in a suitable recess formed in the frame 11 at one side while the other end is bent upon. itself to form a loop as shown at 25 to facilitate adjustment of the pin 24.

It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed invarious other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is:

1. In a combination easel and lamp, the

combination of a picture frame, a support therefor, a lamp supporting member thereon at its upper end, and means upon said supporting member for retaining a picture backing in said picture frame.

2. In a combination easel and lamp, the combination of a picture frame, a support, a supporting plate carried by said support, tongues formed upon said supporting plate aiid adapted to engage a picture backing for holding it in place relative to said frame, and a removable pin carried at the end of said frame opposite said supporting plate for cooperation with said tongues. I

3. In a combined easel and lamp, the oombination'of a picture frame, a support including a supporting member carried by the support at its upper end, means upon said supportingmcmber for retaining a picture bacl zing in said frame, a lamp socket supporting plate formed upon said supporting member, and a lamp socket carried by said supporting plate.

4. In a combined easel and lamp, the combination of a picture frame, and support having a base at one end and a loop at its opposite end, a supporting plate attached to said support adjacent said loop, a lamp socket carried by said supporting plate, and means formed upon said supporting plate for assisting in confining a picture in said frame.

5. In a combined easel and lamp, the combination of a picture frame and support having a base at one end and a loop at its opposite end, a supporting plate attached to said support adjacent to said loop, a lamp socket carried by said supporting plate, tongues formed upon said supporting plate and adapted to engage a picture backing for holding it in place behind said frame.

6. In a combined easel and lamp, the combination of a picture frame and support having a base at one end and a loop at its opposite end, a supportingplate attached to said support adjacent to said loop, a lamp socket carried by said supporting plate, tongues formed upon said supporting plate and adapted to engage a picture backing for holding it in place behind said frame and a removable pin carried at the end of said frame opposite said supporting plate for co-acting with said tongues in confining a picture backing in said frame.
