LOCK. APPLICATION men SEPT. 23,. 1920.
l/VVE/VTOH JSZaz'belZe BY ATTORNEYS 9M 7 I W 'UNlTED STATES JACK SLAIBELLE, OF LUDLOW, VERMGNT.
LOQK.
Specification of L tersr tent. Patented June27, 1922.
Application filed September 23, 1920. Serial No. 412,194.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JACK SLAIBELLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ludlow, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to looks and is particularly designed as a lock for doors.
The majority of locks now in use employ expensive complicated keys and tumbler mechanisms which add materially to the cost of manufacture and production.
The invention initially contemplates and has for its principal object the provision of a simple and inexpensive lock particularly designed for doors.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lock for a door which comprises in connection with the usual knob actuated latch, means capable of engagement therewith for securing the same in a position to obstruct the opening of the door upon which it is mounted.
A still further object of the invention is to provide the combination with a bolt, a key having a gravity actuated finger for engagement therewith to operate the same.
\Vith the above recited and other objects in view, some of which will appear hereafter, reference is made to the following description, claims and accompanying drawings forming a part of this application and in which:
Figure 1 is an inside view of a door and a jamb with the locking device in applied position.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken approximately on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a similar view on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a similar view on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of the key employed in connection with the lock.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 10 designates a door and 11 a door jamb or frame to which the door is adapted to be hinged. A latch 12 is mounted on the inside of the door and is supported for sliding movements between the pinion 13 and the bearing plate 14 which is secured to the door above the latch 12. The pinion 13 is mounted on a transverse shaft 15 and constitutes an integral part of the inner knob 16. The bearing plate 14 is provided with a depending flange 17 and the pinion is provided' with a radial flange 18, said flanges co-acti-ng with the latch to confine the same against the inner surface of the door. The outer extremity of the shaft 15 has secured thereto the outer knob 19. The under edge of the latch 12 is provided with rack teeth 26 which co-act with the teeth 21 of the pinion. 13 whereby upon rotation of the knobs which are keyed or otherwise secured upon the shaft 15, one extremity of the latch will be thrown into and out of engagement with the keeper 22 provided on the door jamb. The opposite extremity of the latch is provided with a vertical groove 23 in its outer face and a hasp 24 is pivoted to the door in a position to engage the groove 23 when the opposite extremity of the latch is engaged with the keeper 22. The free end of the hasp is slotted as at 25 which is adapted to receive the staple 26 carried by the inner side of the door 10. When it is desired to secure the latch in locked position, the hasp is thrown to a position to engage in the groove with the slotted portion 25 engaged over the staple 26 and a padlock 27 is fastened through the staple.
An additional look here illustrated as a bolt 30 is mounted for transverse sliding movement on the door jamb by means of the headed screws 31 which are passed through the slot 32 in the bolt. The upper edge of the bolt is provided with a plurality of rack teeth 33 and the door jamb is provided with a transverse key hole opening 34 arranged in superposed relation with respect to the bolt. The key for actuating the bolt 30 comprises a shank 35 provided at one end with the finger gripping portion 36 and bifurcated at its opposite end as at 37. A pawl or finger 38 is pivoted within said bifurcated end and is free to gravitate to a vertical position when the key is turned.
To actuate the bolt 30, the key is inserted through the opening 34, the pawl 0r finger 38 being disposed in alignment with the shank 35. When the bifurcated extremity of the shank 35 protrudes through the key hole opening 34 and the key is turned in the proper direction, the pawl 38 will gravitate into engagement with the teeth 33 as the key is rotated thus throwing the bolt to locked or unlocked position as the case may be. If thelbolt is relatively long the key may be rotated several times to obtain the desired throw of the bolt. When the key has its function it is only necessary to withdraw the same from the key hole which action will serve to align the pawl with the shank to permit of its removal.
h howing in the drawing is in no way sliding bolt having rack teeth, a rot h ft intended as a limitation but is merely illustrative and it is understoocl'tha't Variations and modifications which fall within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to when found expedient.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byiLetters Patent A l. A lock. for doors comprising a combination with the knob actuated latch having a groove therein, of a hasp swingingly mounted for engagement with the groove in the latch when the same is in locked position and means for locking said hasp in said groove. 1
2. The combination with a door havinga knob actuated bolt of means for securing said bolt in locked position comprising a grooved portion in the bolt, a liasp, a staple tion of thebolt and means for securing the the hasp over the staple.
3. A door fastening means embodying at extending through the door having inner and outer knobs, secured to the opposite extremities thereof, a pinion secured to said shaft and engageable with the rack teeth for eil'ecting sliding movements of the bolt, a peripheral guard flange on the outer side of said pinion between which and the door the bolt is arranged, a bearing plate secured to the inner side of the door, a guard flange on the bearing plate between which .iand the door the opposite side of the bolt isireceived, said bolt having a transversely grooved portion and a hasp swingingly mounted for engagement with the grooved portion of the bolt when the same is in locked position, and means For locking said. hasp in said groove;
JACK sLAIBELLE.
