I To all whom it WILLIAM M. THOMAS, 0F CINCINNATI, OHIO.
SWING.
concern."
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residin at the city of Cincinnati, in the county of amilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention belongs to that class of swings, which are propelled or swung by the occupant thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide a swing of this class which shall be simple in construction, cheap of manufacture and big ply efficient in use.
y swing is made up of very few parts and possesses a marked degree of utility.
The swing is very strong and will not readily get out of order and can be made for use of children or adults.
Its various features and advanta es will readily become apparent from the following specification.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification:
Fig. 1, is a plan view of my new swing,
Fig. 2, is a side eleyation of the swing shown in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3, is a back view of the swing.
The seat of the swing is marked 1 and it is provided with an extension 2 at the forward end thereof, which is straddled by the occupant, and 3 is the back of the swing.
At the forward part of the seat, I pivotally connect to part 2 of seat 1, at the point 5 a downwardly extending bar or rod 4, carrying at its lower extremity the foot supports 6. On the extension 2. I pivot at point '2' a handle bar 8 provided with handles 9.
The back 3 is supported at the rear part of the seat 1 by brace rods or supports 10, 10,
'which at their lower extremities are bent -over toward each otherto form extensions 12, 12, provided at their ends with ears as 13. At the points 14, 14, where the sup- ports 10, 10 pass through seat 1, they are pivotally connected.
Underneath the seat 1, approximately at the longitudinal center thereof, I suspend a connecting link 15, to which the foot supporting bar or rod 4 is pivotally connected at 16 and to which the handle bar 8, at its lower extremity is pivotally connected at 17; the rear end of said connecting bar 15,
l Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 27, 1922. Application filed January 24, 1921. Serial N9. 439,658.
being pivotally connected to the ears 13 at point 18.
- Itwill be noted that the seat is recessed at points 20 and 21, to afford play for the foot support arm 4 and supports 10 respectively, and is slotted at 22 to allow play for the handle bar 8.
The swing is adapted to be suspended on cables or cords attached to hooks 30.
In use, the operator sits on seat 1, straddling the extension 2, places his hands on the handles 9 and his feet on the foot supports 6, pulling back on the handles 9 and pressing forward on the foot supports 6, his back pushing backwardly on the seat 3; this forces the foot support bar 4, and the handle bar 8' and the back 3 to rock on the pivotal points 5, 7 and 14, respectively and the connecting link or bar 15 to move forward, operating on the pivotal points'16, 17 and 18; this forces the foot supporting rod 4, handle bar 8 and back 3 and its connections in the position shown in dotted lines in F i 2; by pressing the handle bar 8 forwardl y and the foot supporting bar 6 backwardly and relieving the p-rem'ure on the back 3 brings the parts into approximately normal position, except as allowed by the lay of the recesses and slots 20, 22 and 21. ing this backward and forward motion, the
swing is propelled by the operator, without y repeat What I claim as new and my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a swing of the class described, a seat and a back therefor, a connecting link disposed horizontally under said seat, a foot support rod and foot supports thereon, a handle bar carrying handles thereon, said foot supporting rod, said handle bar and said back pivotally connected to the seat and to said connecting link.
"2. In a swing of the class described, a seat and a back therefor, a connecting link disposed horizontally under said seat, a foot support rod and foot supports thereon, pivoted to the forward end of the seat and to the forward end of said connecting link, a handle bar carrying handles thereon ivotally connected in said seat and to said link,
toward the front end of said seat, said back disposed at the rear end of the seat pivotally' posed horizontally'under said seat, a foot support rod and foot supports thereon, pivoted to the forward end of the seat and to theforward end of said connecting link a. handle bar carrying handles thereon pivotally connected in said seat and to said back for assisting in propelling the swing, and means connected to one of said members and adapted to be engagedby the operator -for'also assisting in propellin the swing.
5. In a swing, a substantia ly fiat seat, bracket arms pivotally connected to the rear end- 0% said seat and having extensions extending toward one another, a back-rest carried by said bracket arms, a lever pivotally connected to the forward end of said seat and provided withhtreadles, a link connecting said lever to the extensions of said link, toward the front end of said seat, said bracket arms, a member pivotally connected back disposed at the rear end of the seat and pivotally. connected to the seat and to the rear end of said connecting link and means at the top of the foot support rod and at the top of the back to facilitate connecting the same to suspending means.
LA swing including a seat a member pivotally connected thereto and'projecting above and below said seat, a second member pivotally connected to the seat and projecting above and below the same, a link arture at Clncinnati, Ohlo, thls 15th day of ranged below the seat and connecting said members for joint movement, a back-rest mounted on the first mentioned member and adapted to be engaged by the operators to said seat intermediate the ends of the seat, and means pivotally connecting the last mentioned member to said link.
6. In a swing of the class described, a seat anda back'therefor, a connecting link,- a foot support rod having foot supports thereon, and a handle bar carrying handles, said foot sup orting rod, said handle bar and said back being pivotally connected to the seat and to said connecting link.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signa- January, 1921.
