Description

QJMMW Patented May 30, 1922.
,j Ja'rZenSZcL'fo J. 1. BARTENsmN.
ADIUSTABLE SPANNER WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED OCT 13 1919 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J'. BARTENSTEIN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOB, TO THE FAIRMOUNT TOOL .AND FORGING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF OHL'O.
ADJUSTABLE SPANNER VIRENCH.
Application filed October 13, 1919.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, J oHN J. B ARTnNsrniN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county oi Cuyahoga and State 0i Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Spanner -Wrenches, oi which the following is a speciiication. l
This invention relates to wrenches and more particularly to spanner wrenches ot the adjustable type.
The main object or". the invention is to provide a spanner wrench of simple and dura` ble construction, which is easily and quickly adjusted for fitting various sizes of cylindrical bodies, and when adjusted will remain securely locked against movement.
with the above and other objects in view as will be readily understood, the invention will be hereinafter 'fully described as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and the novel Features thereot` willv be distinctly pointed out in the appended claim.
Like characters of reference are used to designate corresponding parts in the several views of the drawings.
Figure l .is a side view oi a wrench con-- structed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a similar view of the upper end o' the wrench, the strap being in section to better show the construction, and
F ig. 3 is a front edge view of a fragmental portion of the wrench.
Referring to the drawings, l represents a bar or handle having at one end a suitably bent fixed jaw 2, which terminates in an inwardly extending pin 3 iior engaging a recess in the body to be moved. A movable jaw comprising a block t having an inclined iace 5 for engaging the body to be moved, is pivoted at G between the sides ot a strap 7, which passes around the handle l and is adapted to slide thereon. For locking the block e to the handle in its adjusted position, the same is provided with a transverse lug or tooth 8, which is adapted to engage teeth 9 at the inner edge of said handle. Formed Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1922.
Serial No. 330,279.
integrally with the block t is a thumb lever l() for tilting the block to disengage its lug 8 from the teeth 9 for permitting` the block to be slidably moved along` the handle to an adjusted position. A suitable bow spring ll, having an upturned end 12 secured in a groove 13 of the block el, while its free end 14 rests upon the handle, exerts pressure upon the inner side ot the thumb lever l0 and tends to force the lug 8 into engagement with the teeth 9.
n adjusting the wrench for use, a slight pressure upon the thumb lever 10 will tilt the block d and move its lug 8 clear of the teeth 9, as illustrated in Figure 2, thus permitting the block to be slidably moved to an adjusted position. Upon releasing the pressure on the thumb lever l0, the block Ll will be forced by the action of the bow spring l1 to normal position and its lug 8 will engage one of the teeth 9, thereby securely locking the block against sliding movement.
rhe invention as set forth and described is well adapted for the purpose intended, but it will be understood that slight changes .in the details of' construction may be made within the scope of the claim.
Having fully described my invention, what l claim is:
ln a wrench, the combination of a handle having an inwardly extending pin, a strap, the strap being slidably mounted `upon the handle, a block, the block being pivoted to the strap, the block having` an inclined face adapted to engage a body to be moved, the handle having teeth, the block havingl a lug at one side oi' the pivot adapted to engage said teeth to prevent sliding movement ot the block, a lever extending from the block at the other sideot the pivot for tilting the block to disengage its lug from said teeth, and a spring .fixed in said block and tending to press said lever of the block from said handle for holding said lug in engagement with said teeth, substantially as described.
'In testimony whereof l atti): my signature.
JOHN J. BAR-TENSTEIN.
