To all whom it may concern:
citizen of Poland, residing at Cobalt, province Ontario, Canada, have invented certain. nevwand useful Improvement in Gombinaproved bed as it appears in its unfolded Be it known that I. JQZEF Plpirnowsm,
tion Beds and lVardrobes, of which the following is a specification;
This invention relates to folding bedsand has for'its object the provision of'ana'rt-icle of furniture which can be used not only as a bed, but which can also be folded up tolook like and to be usedas a'wardrobe.- A
A further object of this invention is the provision of means 'foradjusting the heightof the head of the bed as desired, which may be necessary in certain kinds of illness when the head of the'occupant may have to be higher or lower than the feet.
For the attainment of the above and other objects, as will appear more fully hereinafter, I employ the arrangement and combination o parts shown in the preferred form in the accompanying drawings, in
which,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my 1mdrawer 12 therein. For acting as the head of the bed, a trough shaped stationary section 15 is provided comprising the back 16 and the sides 17. Said head being suitably fastened to the upwardly projecting sides 13 of stand 10 as by pins 1 1, and being designed to receive the mattress and the spring 18 in the folded position of the bed. Passing through side rails 19 is rod 20, about which said side rails may be swung into the folded position, said rod passing through a suitable slot 21 in upstanding side 13 and being secured at its end to rack 22 having ratchet teeth 23 thereon. Said rack issupported in adjusted position by means of pin 2% passing through holes 25 in Z-bar 26. which is attached to side member 13, said pin 24 engaging a hole in said rack. Lever 27, having handle 28 at one end thereof, and a tooth 29 for engaging rack 22 at the other end thereof, is pivoted on stud 30, which passes ber 13. p I Thefoot of the bed comprises upper section. 35, lower section 36, and legs 37, said legs being hinged to section 36 at 38, being secured against movement in their unfolded position by removable bracing hooks 39, and serving to support the foot end of rails 19.
Separator blocks 40 are attached to the inner faces of posts 11 of section as shown, said upper section 35 being secured to the lower section 36 by hinges 42, about which section 35 may be swung until the edges of blocks 40 rests on the upper edges of rails 19. Fastening means of any suitable type such as catches 43 serve to secure sections35 and 36 against movement in their unfolded positions. (Fig. 1.)
For holding side rails 19 to sides 17 of the head of the bed, in the folded position thereof, catch members 44 on rails 19 and 45 on sides 17 are provided. Spring 18 of the bed is supported on side rails 19 by cleats or blocks of any of the usual types, andare not shown.
To fold the bed from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2, fastenings 13 are undone, and section 35 folded about hinges 42 to a position at right angles to the unfolded position thereof. Hooks 39 are then detached from the under edges of rails 19, and the foot of the bed lifted somewhat, allowing legs 37 to be folded about hinges 38 on to section 36. The entire partly folded foot end of the bed is then swung upwardly about rod 20 until the upper edge of rail 19 meets the vertical inner "edge of side 17, so that catch members 44 may be made to engage members 45, the side rails assuming a vertical position. and the various parts being disposed relatively as shown in Fig. 2.
The underside of the bed bottom consists of doors -16 suitably hinged at a7, so that the space between the doors and the spring 18, may, if desired, be used as a wardrobe, the appearance of which is presented by the bed in its folded position. For adjusting the height of the head end 24, the Weight of the head end of the bed.
of the bed as maybe necessary in case'of certain kinds of illness, handle 28 is grasped and pulled away from rack 22 against the action of spring 32, wherebytooth. 29 of lever 27 is disengaged from rack 22.; By raising handle 28, whereby lever 27 is swung about stud 3O, and then releasing the pull on said lever, the tooth 29 may be made to engage oneof the lower teeth of rack 22. By holding handle 28,. then removing, pin
bottom= is putjon said handle, which may now be lowered to raise said rackand there;
with rod 20 .and side rails 19, after which pin 24 is replaced to hold said side rails in the adjusted position.
., "lhisoperation may be repeated until the desired height of the bed head is obtained, or the operation maybe reversed to lower the head of the bed. It will be understood that similar adjusting mechanisms are provided on both sides of the bed, and that the Various parts of the bed are so proportioned V I 7 that they fit together compactly when toldedfto give the appearance of a wardrobe as shown in Fig. 2. 4
What I claim is: e
t 1. In a folding bed, a head section, a foldable foot section, side rails connecting said ing a rod, side rails mounted on said rod, 21
rack on the end of said rod, a lever for adjusting said rack, and a removable pin for holding said rack in adjusted'position.
In testimony whereof I have afiiXed my signature, this 15th day of May 1920.
