Be it known that I, HOWARD L. HOY, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Miguel, in the county of San Luis Obispo and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Convertible Porch Hammocks and Bedstea-ds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to furniture and more particularly to bedsteads, and has for bedstead structure of substantial organiza tion and simple parts enabling the construction of the bed at comparatively small cost. Another object is to provide an improved supporting means for the mattress frame to enable the latter to yield vertically and also to swing horizontally in any direction. The invention consists of the construction, the combination and in details and arrangements of the parts an embodiment of which invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described and claimed herein.

Figure 1 is a perspective of the structure assembled to form a bedstead.

Fig. 2 is a perspective of the structure organized to form a porch hammock.

The improved bedstead comprises substantially duplicate end frames 2 and 3 that may be made inexpensively of tubular material, the frames being substantially U- shape in form with the crossbars uppermost and forming end rails. The leg forming parts of each frame are connected by transverse brace bars 4: and these braces are preferably reinforced by a longitudinal central brace 5. These braces may, and preferably do, consist of rods connected by ties 6. The foot ends of the legs of the frames 2 and 3 may be provided with sockets 7 and casters 8.

The top rails of the bed frames 2 and 3 are apertured as at -9 and the rear legs of the frames are also apertured at 10, and when the structure is to be utilized as a bedstead then a set of brace bars 11 are arranged in the top rails of the frames and may be passed through the apertures 9 and secured as by screws, or bolts, or nuts 12 may be mounted on threaded ends of the rods 11 passed through the apertures 9. It is understood that these rods may be detachably mounted and secured in any suitable and simple means. When the structure is to be utilized as a porch hammock with the parts set up as shown in Fig. 2, then the brace rods 11 will be connected to the rear vertical legs and may be fastened thereto as by the nuts 12.

One of the features of the present invention is the provision of a mattress spring frame which is shown as consisting of the front longitudinal side rail 14 the ends of which may be provided with corner pieces or elbows 15, and into these may be secured transverse end bars or sections 16. The other longitudinal rail'17 of the bed spring frame-is preferably ada )ted to be connected in a position either at the outer ends of the end bars 16, or as shown in Fig. 1, or it may be connected at a suitable intermediate position on the end rails 16 as shown in Fig. 2.

To permit this alternate arrangement of the adjustable side rail 17, there may be slidably mounted on the end rails 16 sockets 18 having inwardly extending portions in which the contiguous endsof the rail 17 are mounted and these sockets 18 can be bolted, keyed or otherwise fastened as by pins .19 in the outer'position on the ends of the rails 16 or can be fastened in the intermediate position as shown in Fig. 2. The side rails 14: and 17 have connected along their inner sides sprlngs 20 to which is connected a suitable mattress supporting means of which any suitable kind may be utilized, in this case, represented as a wire fabrication 21 the ends of which are not connected to the end rails 16 so that when the side rail 17 is adjusted to its outermost position the mattress support 21 is held substantially fiat in the plane of the frame formed by the members 16, 14. and 17, but when the side rail 17 is adjusted in its inner position, as in Fig. 2, then the mattress support 21 may sag and thus form a convenient hammock or couch seat when the mattress is applied.

The mattress frame is supported in a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1, when the structure is used as a bedstead, the supporting means comprising a set of links 22 the ends of which may form hooks 23; the lower hooks engaging eyes or other suitable means 24 in the end rails 16, and the upper hooks of the links 22 are engageable with eyes 25 formed in springs 26 that are connected to eye bolts 27 mounted in the top rails of the end frames of the bed. Preferably the suspension springs 26 are incased in a sleeve 28 that may be supported on the lower' ends of the eye bolts 27, as shown in Fig. 4.

When the structure is to be rearranged for use as a porch hammock, as shown in Fig. 2, then the rear set of links 22 are disconnected and a shorter set of links 22 are used in their stead, these links thus inclining the end-rails 16 and elevating, the rear side rail 17 to the position shown so that this rail will form a back rest for a porch hammock.

fit is understood that the brace rods 11 are dismounted from the top bars of the end frames and replaced in the back legs of the end frames when the structure is set up as a porch hammock so that the braces 11 will not be in a position to interfere with the use of the device as a hammock or swing.

From the above it will be seen that the mattress frame is yieldingly suspended by the springs 26 either when the device is used as a hammock or as a bedstead, and to provide for a limited movement endwise and laterally of the mattress frame the corners of the latter may be connected to the adj acent legs of the frames as by springs 30 engaging adjacent eyes 31 in the elbows 15 and eye bolts 32 in the legs of the frames.

Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

'What is claimed is:

1. A convertible bedstead structure comprising end frames, a mattress frame having one of its side rails adjustably mounted on its end rails, a mattress carried by said ,frame, one side of said mattress frame being flexibly connected-to the end frames, and flexible hangers between the upper portions of the end frames and the end rails of the mattress frame.

2. In a convertible bedstead structure, the combination with end frames of a mattress frame comprising side and end rails, one of which side rails has sliding engagement with the end rails so that it may be moved toward or away from the opposite side rail, a woven wire mattress carried by said mattress frame, hangers suspended from the upper portions of the end frames and connected to the end hangers suspended from the upper portions of the end frames and connected to the end rails of the mattress frame, and springs interposed between one side of the mattress frame and the adjacent parts of the end frames.
