Be it known that I, FoRnsr L. GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenmore, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hair cutters and particularly to new and improved parts therefor.
A particular object of the invention is to provide an attachment for hair cutters whereby hair may be evenly fed to the cutting shears and, which in use with a hair cutter, will provide means whereby hair may be evenly and uniformly cut in a relatively short period of time.
Further objects are to provide a strong, durable hair cutting device, of simple, economical construction, and particularly a power operated device of the type commonly known as hair clippers. which may be used to advantage in cutting long, as well as short hair.
The above and other apparent objects are accomplished and other ends are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein disclosed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, it being understood that. changes, variations and modifications may be made or substitutions resorted to which come within the scope of the matter hereinafter claimed.

Proceeding now to a detailed description of the invention, with particular reference to the nmbodiment thereof illustrated in the drawing, the numeral 6 is used generally to denote a cutter frame which is Shaped at one end toform a hollow handle 7 and has a central portion which forms the casing 8. The lower end of said frame 6 forming a cutting head 9. The cutting head comprises a serrated base plate 10 which may be integral with the frame 6 or attached thereto and a reciprocating serrated knife 11 which is positioned on said plate 10, with the serrated edges of the plate and the knife forming a cutting or clipping shears. The base plate is provided with guide pins 12 and the knife with the slotsll which are adapted to receive said pins 12 so that the knife is limited to a lateral movement. Vith the base plate in a. horizontal position, the frame extends upwardly from the rear thereof at approximately a right angle thereto and is enlarged to form the housing 8. A shaft 14 is ournaled in the sides of the casing 8 so as to extend laterally thereacross and the said sha-ft 14 is provided with a cylindrical member 15 which is coaxially and rigidly fixed thereto. The cylindrical member or drum is provided with a circumferentially extending, serpentine groove 16. An actuating lever 17 is pivotally secured to the frame 6 by the screw bolt 18 or other suitable means, with the upwardly projecting end 0f the lever 17 seated in the groove 16 of the drum 15 and the said lever extends downwardly from said pin 18, then inwardly in parallel spaced relation to the base plate 10 and terminates in a downward turned end which is positioned in a suitable slot 2O in the rear edge of the knife 11 so that a rotation of the drum 15 will cause a reciprocating movement of the lever 17 and impart a `reciprocating movement to said knife 11. The lever is enlarged as at 21 and is provided with a laterally directed slot 22 so that the retaining screw 24. may be positioned therein without interfering with the reciprocat- 60 is connected vin the usual manner to a source ing movement of the lever 17. A lid 23 which is provided for the cutting head 9 is held in position. by the retaining screw 24 which extends through the slot 22 and is threaded in a suitable bore 25 in the bed of the cutter head 9. A toothed wheel 26 is coaxially and rigidly fixed on a shaft 14 adjacent one end thereof. The handle 7 is inclined upwardly from the casing 8 and a drive shaft 27 extends longitudinally therethrough. The drive shaft is mounted in suitable bearings 28 and extends through the c-asing 8 and into the housing or brush supporting arm 29. A worm 30 is coaxially and rigidly fixed on the shaft 27 so that the threads of the worm will engage the teeth on fio the wheel 26.
The housing 29 is threaded into or otherwise secured to the casing 8 as at 3l and is provided on its downwardly extending end with a cap 32 which is threaded therein and provided with suitable bearings in which the free end of the drive shaft 27 is mounted. The free end of the housing 29 is enlarged and the shaft 33 is journaled in said enlarged portion of said housing'and in a bea-ring in the ca'p 34 which is threaded in the outer lateral side of the enlarged portion of said housingso that the axis of the shaft 33`will be at a right angle to the axis of the shaft v27. A toothed wheel 35 is coaxially fixed to the shaft 33 and a worm screw 36 is fixed to the shaft 27 so that the threads of the worm 36 will engage the teeth in the wheel 35. By this arrangement, a rotary movement of the shaft 37 will impart a relatively slow rotary movement to the shaft 33. The shaft 33 extends laterally from the free end of the housing 29 in parallel spaced relation to the serrated edges of the plate 10 and the knife 11. A segmental portion of the shaft 33 is removed from the shaft 33 to provide a fiat surface 37 and a cylindrical brush is adapted to be detachably secured on the shaft 33 with its circumferential edge in approximate contact with the serrated edge of the knife 11. The brush 38 comprises a hollow core provided with Va bore adapted to receive the shaft 33, so as to be rotatable therewith. The core 39 is provided with a plurality of closely set brush tufts 42 which project radially therefrom. The inner end of the core 39 is provided with a f'spring 41 which is adapted to snap into the cireumferentially extending groove 40 0n said shaft 43 when the brush is positioned `thereon and is thus retained in position so that it willnot be unintentionally removed therefrom.

"tIt-is obvious that the rotation of the shaft 27 will cause a rotary movement of the worm screw 26 and thus impart a rotary movement to the drum l5 and cause a reciprocating movement 'of the lever 17 and impart a similar movement of the knife 1l, thus providing a practical, highly efficient means for operating said knife.
It is` also obvious that the rotary movement of the drive shaft 27 will cause the brush 38 to revolve in the direction of the arrow shown in Figure 3. The free ends of the hair may be thus fed to the shears formed by the serrated edges of the plate 10 and the reciprocating knife 11.V
`While the member 38 has been shown andV described as a brush, it is to be understood that the invention contemplates the employment of a reel or any other suitable device which may be rotatably secured in a similar position so as to feed the hair to said shears.

any hair cutting device and may be manufactured and used in the form of an attachment which may be secured to any form of clippers or cutters. Y
Having'thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a hair cutter, having a serrated base plate and a reciprocating serrated knife, of a cylindrical brush rotatably fixed to Vsaid cutter with its axis in parallel relation tosaid knife and spaced therefrom so that the peripheral surface of the brush will be in approximate contact with said knife, and means to reciprocate said knife and rotate said brush. f Y
2. A hair cutter comprising the combination of a hair clipper and a member rotatably secured thereto so as to engage the material to be cut and bring it into contact with the shears on said clipper, means to operate said clipper and means to rotate lsaid member. f
3. In a hair cutter, a cutting'head comprising a serrated plate, a` serrated knife positioned thereon so as to be laterally movable in relation thereto, a supporting frame extending upwardly at approximately a right angle to said plate, a drum rotatably mounted in said frame, a circumferentially extending, peripheral groove around said drum, a lever fulcrumed on said frame, with one end thereof positioned in said groove, and with the other end thereof engaging vsaid knife, and means to rotate said drum.

In a' hair cutter, aV cutting head comprising a serrated plate, a serrated knife positioned thereon so as to be laterally movable in relation thereto, a supporting frame extendingv upwardly at approximately gage the material to be eut and bring it into conta-et With said knife and means to simull0 taneously rotate said drum and said member Substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
