Be it known that I, CLAUDE C. LAKE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illiniois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Overhead Switches, of. which the following, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a full and complete specification.
This invention relates to switches which are installed in over-head track systems.
Amongthe objects of this invention is to obtain an over-head switch which comprises few parts, which is easily installed, which is durable and not liable to get out of order or break, and which is well adapted to support heavy loads. Additional objects are to obtain an over-head switch which requires no base or frame for hangers, either prior or subsequent to the switch being installed.
In the drawings referred to Fig. l is a top plan view of a switch embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; and Fig. 8 an end elevation of said switch.
A reference character applied to designate a given part indicates said part throughout the several figures of the drawing, wherever the same appears.
A represents a casting having hangers B, B, B, integral therewith and depending therefrom. a, a, a, a, represent apertures through which bolts are extended to secure said casting in position. C, C, C, represent abutments which are integral with casting A, and D, Fig. 2, represents a safety member pivoted to one of said abutments. Similar safety members are pivotally mounted on each of the abutments C, C, C, and d, Fig. 2, reprensents a bolt on which safety member D is pivoted. (Z represents an abutment on member D. E represents a longitudinally movable bolt member, which is mounted in aperture 6 in hangers B, B, B, so that one end thereof abuts against abutment d, and the other end is positioned so as to be engaged by cam F on hanger G, at the free end of the switch, as said hangeris moved to and fro in the operation of the switch. L, (Fig. 1). represents a plate which is rigidly secured on bolt I, and Z, Z, respectively represent flexible connections which are attached, at one end, to plate L, and by means of which said bolt is retracted from the recess h with which it is engaged, against the resiliency of spring J. Z, Z, represent pulleys over which the connections Z, Z, are mounted, so that the free ends of said connections are perpendicular. lVhen said free ends, or

.and by continued downward movement of one of said free ends the free end of the switch, (including hanger G), is moved to the right or to the left, as viewed in Fig. 1, as desired, along the track or table H, (base 9 resting on said table). The free ends of rails K, K, are thus brought into alignment with the desired ones of the rails X, X, adjacent to said rails K, K. Vhen hanger G is moved, as last above recited, the cam F is brought into engagement with one end of the bolts E, E, to move said bolt longitudinally against abutment (Z' of member D, and thereby turn said member D on its pivot (Z, raising thefree end of'said member out of the path of a car on said tracks, and of the car about to travel over the switch. M represents a casting which is provided with apertures m, m, through which bolts are designed to be extended to secure the casting in place in the overhead track system. N, N, are hangers which are integral with casting M, and n represents a tie which switch rails K, K, are secured; and said casting is secured pivotally on pivot bolt 1). R- represents a plate which is secured at its ends to castings A and M by screws 'r, 1'. Plate R corresponds in length to rails K, K, to hold hangers B, B, B, G, and N, N, in
proper relative position while the switch is being installed, with the free ends of said rails K, K, adjacent to railsX, X.
To operate the switch the perpendicular ends of connections Z, Z, or one thereof, pulled down to retract bolt I fromrecess k, and the proper one of said ends-isthen pulledfurther down ardto move the casting 9 and hanger Gthe required distance'in the direction desired, tobring rails K, K, into alignment with the desired ones of the rails X, X. y
I claim:
1. in an over-head switch, a casting hav-;
ing a plurality of hangers integral therewith and depending therefrom,-and provided with an arc-shaped table, in combination with a switch-rail supporting hanger provided with a base arranged to travel on said table, switch rails, means to support one end of said rails on said supporting hanger, and means to pivotally support the other end of said switch rails.
2. in an over-head switch, a casting havinga plurality ofhangers integral therewith and depending therefrom, and provided with an arc-shaped table having recesses thereon in spaced relation, in eoinbination with a switch-rail supporting hanger provided with a basearranged to travel on said table,switch rails, a rail plate, bolts arranged to secure said plate to said supporting member, an. additional casting provided with han ers integral therewith and depending there rom, a rail plate piigoi'ially secured to one of said last named hangers, and means to secure said switch rails to said last named plate, longitudinally movable boltsin said first named switch sup-- porting hangeig means to yieldingly hold said bolts in engagement with said recesses, and means to retract said bolts from said recesses. 1
