FORTUNE-TELLING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. pamm fq 259 1921 Application filed September 1, 1920. Serial No. 407,330.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1,FRANK KNowLns, a citizen oi the. United States, residing at West Englewood, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F ortune-Telling Devices, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to fortune telling devices, and more particularly to that type oi toy which upon operation, will indicate a certain answerto a question which has first been asked, or will indicate facts without first questioning. I V
An object or the invention is toprovide a Fortune telling device which will be operated by a reciprocating or swinging arm, and is provided with a board upon which are printed a plurality of numbers, each number having a corresponding number upon a card,
said card having the answer or fact there upon.
A further object is to provide a fortune telling device which will be easy to manipulate, and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which Form a part of my specification,
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved fortune telling device;
Fig. 2 is a detailed plan view of the answering cards;
Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the back of the question or number dial, showing the sprocket wheel and pawls for operatingthe same;
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of operating mechanism of said fortune telling device,
and
Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional View of the operating mechanism, taken on the llnes 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification to designate corresponding parts.
The base or back plate 1, is provided with a hole 2 or suitable means, whereby the device may be attached to any vertical surface. This plate 1 may oeof any suitable shape or design, such as shown in the drawings.
Extending at right angles from said plate 1, is a pin or stem 2, upon which the pendulum 3 is adapted to be swung back and forth. The pendulum 3 is of any suitable design and is provided with a peep hole or opening 4, through which the numbers of theanswers will be visible.
On the reverse side, or back of said pendulum is a pivoted pawl 5, which is mounted on the block 6, 1
Between the pendulum 3, and the back plate 1, is a spacing block 7, the same being mounted on the pin 2.
Rotatably mounted on the pin 2, between the pendulum 3 and the block 7, is a numbered wheel 8, having a sprocket or gear wheel 9 on itsreverseor back side. The pivoted pawl 5 is supposed to engage the sprocket wheel 8 on every other swing of the pendulum, while a weighted and pivoted pawl 10, attached to the back plate 1, emqgages and prevents the wheel 8 from re-' volving in the opposite direction on the alternate swings of the pendulum. Thus it will be seen that when the pendulum swings in one direction the wheel 8 revolves, while on the opposite swing, the wheel 8 is held from rotation.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the pendulum is given a swing, and the wheel 8 will be rotated until the 38I1l11l1l111 is idle, at which time, the person operating the device will look through the peep or sight hole, and see the number opposite it. The corresponding numbered card will then be found and the answer will be given thereon. I
This device maybe used as an educational device also,to teach a child the numbers or letters.
Any number of numbers may be placed on the wheel 8, and the number of answer cards may be corresponding.
It will. be understood that many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-- on said stud between said pendulum and said back plate, said wheel having characters on its face and adapted to he read through the aperture in the pendulum, a sprocket or gear wheel formed on the back of said rotatable wheel and made integral therewith, a weighted pivoted pawl carried by said back plate, said first mentioned pawl engaging said rotatable wheel for turning the same and said last mentioned pawl to prevent backward motion of the same, substantially as described. V
2. In a fortune telling device, the combination, of a back plate, a rotatable wheel thereon, said wheel having characters on its face, a sprocket wheel integrally formed with said rotatable wheel, an apertured pendulum pivotally mounted on said back plate, and means to rotate saidrotatable wheel, upon the swinging of said pendulum, whereby to bring a character thereon opposite the aperture in the pendulum when the latter comes to rest, y
3. In a fortune telling device, the combination, of a back plate, a stud thereon, a
,wheel revolubly mounted on said stud, said wheel having a plurality of numbers or letters on its face, a sprocket wheel formed integrally with said wheel, an apertured pendulum pivotally mounted on said stud, means carried by said pendulum for rotating the wheel when said pendulum is rotated, and means carried by the back plate to prevent back movement of said wheel.
4. In a fortune telling device, the combination of a back plate, a stud thereon, a wheel revolubly mounted on said stud, said wheel having a plurality of numbers or letters on its face, a sprocket wheel formed integrally with said wheel, a pendulum pivotally mounted on said stud, means carried by said pendulum for rotating the wheel in one direction upon operation of the pendulum, means carried by the back plate to prevent backward movement of said-wheel, means indicating the intended number on said wheel, when said pendulum has become idle, and numbered cards correspond mg with the numbers on said wheel, for in dicating the answers to the questions.
5. In a fortune telling device, the combination of a back plate, a revolubly mounted FRANK KNOWLES.
