UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAG s. JACKSON, 0E NEwAgax, NEW JEEsEY, ASSIGNOB TO THE EossEEnALE- REDDAWAY BEL'IING a HOSE 00., 0E NEWAR NEW JERSEY, a conrorm'rron OF NEW JERSEY.
GONVEYER-BELT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct 18, 1921 Application filed December 11, 1919. Serial No. 344,174.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC S. JACKSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (Jonveyer- Belts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
In the use of'conveyer belts it has been found that the impact of the materials carried by the belt in time effects a considerable abrasive action upon the belt, finally necessitating the replacement of the same. The conveyer belts are used out of doors in frequent instances and the action of the sun and rain upon the belts further deteriorates them and shortens their life. The sun dries out the dressing in the belt and causes it to slip up the pulleys, and themoisture in time rots the fabric.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a conveyer belt which has thereon a protective material which is adapted to prevent the abrasive action of conveyed material from damaging the belt itself. The protective material has the further property of protecting the belt against the action of the sun and rain.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a protective material of such character that it may be applied to an old belt When the latter is in use, or it maybe reapplied to a previousl protected belt after the protecting coating ad worn to such an extent as to be no longer effective. The application of the material to the belt can be made without the removal of the belt from the pulleys if desired, or the belts with protective coatings ,can be made in the belt factories.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a protected belt of such character that the material conveyed thereon Will be prevented from slipping on the belt thereby improving the efiiciency of the conveyer as a whole and further cutting down the wear upon the belt.
Other objects and advantages will be set forth in the accompanying specification and claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a belt having my improved protection associated therewith;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
'In more detail, 10 are layers of canvas or fabric which I have shown stitched together by stitches 11; the particular form of belt shown is not essential. If desired it may be of the solid woven fabric type or any oneof numerous other suitable forms.
Upon the top of the belt is poured a molten or plastic material 12 such as coal tar, pine tar, asphalt or asphalten material or. other plastic material of such nature as "to impregnate the belt and thereafter act as a binder for a layer of wear resisting material 13. I have found. that ordinary gravel may be used as a Wear resisting material. I may also use crushed rock, or metal chips, or
other materials having like characteristics.
The plastic material 12 sets around the wear resisting material and retains the same.
in position.
It will be understood that the application of the plastic and wear resisting material can be made either to old or new belts, either when the same are in use or at the belt factories. The plastic material protects the belt itself from the action of the elements, and the gravel or like material forms a wear resisting and non-slipping coating upon the belt. I
A protected belt when worn may have repeated renewed applications of the protecting coating as it is merely necessary to reapply additional plastic and solid material and this application may be made while the belt is in use.
What I claim is:
1. A .conveyer belt having a protective coating thereon, said coating comprising a material adapted to be applied to the belt in substantially a fluid state, and a solidmaterial adapted to be thereafter applied and re- 5 ISAAC s. JAoKs'oN.
