.BELT COMPANY, OF woRcEs'rER, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSA- CHUSETTS.
To all u; am it may] concern Be it known that I, FRANK- ing at lVorcester, in the county of Worcester, Stateof Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement 1n Woven Carrier Equipment, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad therein to-th'e accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to woven pocketed carrier-equipmentof the general class including cartridge carriers andconstructionally similar equipment for military and other uses. More particularly, it relates to what for convenience may be termed accessory pocket equipment. By accessory pocket equipment I intend carriers or pockets such as for use 'aremounted detachably upon a supporting belt or the like, or upon another carrier forming a part of belt-like equipment. These generally consistgof what for convenience may be termed apocket-pi'ece, a cover or flap for the opening or mouth of the pocket, and a supporting-loopadapt ed to embrace the'belt or carrier to which the accessory'carrieri or pocket is applied.
The first'zpart of, the invention provides in improved manner for. combining the supporting loop and cover. or flap ofan acces so ry carrierr pocketwith the pocket-piece ofthe latter, and for finishing off the carrier or pocket at the bottom of the pouchthereof. The second part of-theinvention provides an improved edge-binding and'backing for the pocket-piece. .i v
The features of the invention will be described first with reference to-the illustrated embodiments thereof, and then will be more particularly pointed out in theclaims at the close of this specification.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 shows a cartridge belt of a wellknown type having applied thereto a series of accessory pockets embodying the features ofthe invention. I
Fig. 2 is a view on a relatively enlarged scale, partly-in section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an isometric view of an accessory carrier or pocket embodying the features of the invention.
Fig. .t is a view in horizontal section in the plane of line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5'is a view in vertical section in the R. Bh'rom' ELDER, a c1t1zen. of the United States, residthem in closed-down condition. I

holding the belt in place encircling the waist of the wearer. Each of the saidcarriers 1 and 2 isfpro'vided with a series of pockets 6, 6, to contain cartridges 7, 7, held by cli s 8. g
ig. 1 shows in connection with the carrier 2 three accessory pockets 9,. 9, 9, which are supported upon the said carrier by means of their suspensory loops 10, 10, 10, encircling the carrier 2, as shown also in Fig. 2. As thus combinedwith the carrier 2, the pockets 9, 9, ar'e supported in place at the front of theusual pockets 6, 6, and lie against the outer faces of the latter. In this instance, the accessory pockets 9, 9, are in tended to be occupied by loaded magazines 11, 11, of the kind used in automatic rifles.
Such magazines 11, 11, are represented as arranged in pairs in vertical-position within the pockets 9, 9. The said pockets are larger I.
' and deeper than the pockets of the carrier 2,
asnecessitated by the size of the magazines. On account ofthe length of the magazines, the lower portions of pockets 9, 9, extend down below the carrier 2, asshown. The said pockets 9, 9, are provided with flexible covers or flaps 12, 12, resembling the covers or flaps 13, 13, of the pockets 6, 6, and, like the latter, furnished with fastener-devices 14:, 14, of glove-fastener type, to secure regular pockets of said cartridge-belt with cartridges held by regular rifle clips, he may combine with the said cartridge-belt mthe manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2 accessory pocketscontaining automatic rifle magazines woven -material,"with the pockets formed "upon the respective carriers-1 and 2m the; process of weav1ng,'1n manner well-known 7.10 and cover-or flap '12. r V -Referring now to the features ofmymloaded with cartridges .The ca1'tri.dges
themselves are the same in both cases. This will enableihim, after firing the cartridges contained in' the automatic rifle magazines, to take the loaded clipsffrom the regular pockets of his cartridge belt and transfer the cartridges therefrom to the automatic rifle magazines.

gin of the pocket-piece.
The constructions which have been described with reference to Figs. 5, 6, 7, 8,
'" bottom margin of the aoclretpiece lessens very materially the liability of such'end to The lower extremity of cealed and protectech is held better than it "could be ifit lay exposed on the back surface of the'p'ocket-piece." Various practical advantages in the process of manufacture are secured.
Referring to; the second part of the invehtion, namely the. improved edge-binding and backing for the pocket-piece,-
In the process of manufacture "usually followed in practice, the pocket-pieces for a number of accessory carriers or pockets 7 as portions of a continuous pocketed web.
After the" weaving has been accomplished,
the respective pockets are separated from one another by cutting transversely across" the sections of web between one pocket and thejnext. This procedure produces a corresponding number of separate pocketpocket-piece having a pocket thereon and pieces, each having portions 9, 9*, (Fig. 4)
of the saidfjweb-sections projecting in the form of flanges orfins at opposite sides of its pocket, the said projecting flanges or fins constituting side marginal porons of the pocket piecer "These flanges or-fins are trimmed away more or less closely to the sides of the pocket;fbut are left with cut or raw, e.,'unfinish'ed edges, and of course such edges would tend to 1 fray and ravel if left 'unprotectedand exposed. The second partoffthe invention has for its object to'eflect the" binding and finishing of the projecting flanges or fins 9", 9", and
I in addition provide the pocket-piece with a smooth lining or backing 20 free from prominent ridges constituted by projecting seams, folds, or edges of a character liable to catch agtinst portions of the supportingbelt or carrier in slipping the accessory carrier or pocket upon said belt or carrier, or
in adjusting it thereon, or in slipping it therefrom. r
The lining or backing-piece 20 lies against the rear face of the pocket-piece, as indicated in Figs 4, 5, etc. Its lateral margins are doubled back upon themselves to conceal their edges, as shown in Figsf3, 4 and 9.
The doubled portions are folded around the flanges or fins 9, 9 of the ocket-piece, as in the said figures, so as to inclose the said flanges or fins, and are secured to the latter bymeans or applied fastenings 22, prefera y. stitches,- passing through all the thicknesses adjacent the sides of the pockets.
The top and bottom marginal portions of the lining or backing-piece 20, usually turned back upon themselves as in Figs. 5, 6, etc., to conceal the edges thereof, are caught by the transverse lines of fastenings 1'5, 15, and 16, 16, and thereby secured. At the bottom of the pocket-piece, the lower mar ginal portion of the lining or backingpiece is contained within the bend 10 of the lower end-portion of the loop-strip, and confined between the said strip and the bottom marginal portion of the pocket-piece.
'What is claimed as the'invention is 1.
