Description

C. J. KEPPEL.
GARMENT PROTECTOR.
APPLICATION FILED o'cr. 28, 1919.
1,391, 121. Pammeaspt. 20, 1921.
WITNESSES INVENTOR ATTORNEYS CHARLES J. KEPPEL, OF MONROEVILLE, OHIO.
GARMENT-PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented S t 20 1921 Application filed October 28, 1919. Serial No. 333,897.
To (17? 207mm 2'2- may concern:
- Be it known that I, CHARLES JAKEPPEn,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Monroeville, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Garment-Protector, of whlch the "following is a full, clear, and exact descript-ion.
This invention relates to an article to be worn upon the person as a garment rotector and has reference more particular y to a so-called childs bib and sanitary napk n.
The primary object of the inventlon Is to provide a substantially waterproof article .5 which may be laundered without impairing any of its water proof qualities, to which end the principal feature of the invention consists in producing the article preferably of two sheets of cloth material with an insert of waterproof material between the sheets which is capable of being introduced between and removed from the sheets of cloth material as occasion demands.
The invention in its preferred form is illustrated as a childs bib. However, its salient features may also find expression in a sanitary napkin, arm-pit shields, aprons,
and in fact any instance where a protector or shield is to be used. 0 In the accompanying drawmg- Figure 1 is a front view of a bib constructed in accordance with the invention, a corner of the same being broken away to show the relative position of the insert;
Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side view of the insert on a small scale; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view.
) According to the illustration a relatively long piece of cloth material is folded upon itself, as at A, with its marginal edges B sewed to provide a pocket C between the folds. This pocket is arranged to accommodate an insert consisting of a sheet 5 of waterproof material cut to conform with the size of the pocket and having attached to its upper edge buttons 6, preferably a pair as shown, the buttons being used to engage buttonholes in the upper edge of the front of the bib to maintain the insert properly within the pocket.
Attention is called to the cut of the neck surrounding portion from which it will be seen that the front fold does not extend to the end of the back fold but terminates short thereof leaving a flap D which performs a dual use. First, it is adapted to overlap the edge of the front fold and produce an envelop effect so far as concerns the pocket and the insert, buttonholes E being provided to receive the-buttons 6 of the insert to close the flap over the opening to the pocket. Then again the flap together with the top part of the back fold, which extends beyond the front fold, provides a covering around the shoulders and neck of the wearer. The folded edge F of the flap is cut away to provide a neck opening to which is attached the collar 7, preferably comprising a flexible strip of metal interposed between a cloth covering, the edges of which are sewed to the edge of the cutaway neck opening. This provision permits the bib to be closely confined around the neck without attaching strings with the flap and upper part of the back fold overlying the shoulders.
WVhen the article is used as an apron the neck opening will, of course, be made to accommodate the device to the waist of the wearer. Furthermore, when used as a sanitary napkin, the neck opening may be done away with. Other minor changes will also be necessary in producing the article for other uses.
I claim:
1 An article of the class described, comprising a strip of fabric folded to form inner and outer members of unequal length and having the marginal edges of the members secured together to form a pocket, the longer inner member being folded upon itself to form a flap overlying the upper end of the outer member and closing the pocket, the said flap being provided with button holes and having its folded edge. cut away to form a neck opening, a collar secured to the neck opening, said collar being open at the back and having a resilient strip secured therein, and an insert of water proof material in the pocket and provided with buttons engaging the button holes of the flap.
2. An article of the class described comprising a strip of fabric folded to form inner and outer members of unequal length and having the marginal edges of the members secured together to form a pocket, the longer inner member being folded upon itself to form a flap overlying the outer member and closing the pocket, the folded edge of said longer member being cut away to a pocket, the longer inner niember being form an opening, and at band secured to the folded upon itself to form a flap extending said opening and inclosing a resilient strip, over the outer member and closing the 10 said band being open at the buck. pocket, the longer member being cut away 3. An article of the class described comat its folded edgeto' form an opening open prising inner and outer fabric members of at'the back. unequal length and secured together to form CHARLES J v KEPPEL,
