subject of the King of Spain, residing at 11 Little St. Andrew street, London, W. (12, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Apparatus for Singeing the Hair, of which the follow ing is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for singeing the hair of the kind in which an electric resistance coil is employed to supply the heat and has among its objects to provide an apparatus by'which this operation may be expeditiously, conveniently and effectively performed.
According to the invention I provide an electric resistance wire within a tube of refractory material such as silica and I mount the tube within a holder with a switch by means of which current. may be passed through or cutoff from the resistance wire, the form of the holder being such as to be intended for convenience in the operation of singeing hair on the head.
-According to the invention I may mount the electric resistance wire upon a support of refractory material such as magnesite or of material such as is used in the manufacture of supports for incandescent gas mantles.
I secure the resistance wire at its respective ends to conducting wires respectively passing along the supporting arms carried by the holder or handle. The resistance wire is mounted within a tubular support of silica whose respective ends are carried by the arms referred to.
According to the invention, moreover, the holder comprising the handleand arms by which the electric resistance wire and the surrounding tube of silica are held may be formed of two symmetrical parts each com prising a handle art and parts for the integral arms and 1; ese respectiveparts may be secured together by means of screws or in any other way and the switch and conducting wires may be laid within recesses or grooves provided on the respective faces or upon one or other face of the symmetrical parts.
The invention also comprises the features which are hereinafter described.

I In carrying the invention into effect as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, I provide a tube of silica 1 within which I mount a resistance wire 2 of nickel chrome or other suitable resistance wire. The tube 1 is placed between two arms 3 1 of a fork. Elbow fittings 5 6 are mounted at the ends of the respective arms 3 4: and these elbow fittings serve as indicated in the drawing for the reception of the ends of the tube 1. The arms of the fork 3 4 are integrally provided with a handle portion 7 within which is mounted a switch 8. The handle 7 is provided with an axial hole 9 and the respective arms 3 1 are provided with communicating holes within which the electric conducting wires 11 and 13 of a flexible cable 10-are disposed. One wire 13 is directly connected to one end of the resistance wire 2 within the elbow fitting 5 and the other wire 11 is connected to the contact head 12. Against the contact head 12 may be pressed a contact spring 141 which is controlled by the lever of the switch 8. The spring arm 14 is connected with the end of the resistance wire 2 into the elbow fitting 6 of the arm 4.
It will be understood that'the arms of the forkas well as the handle 7 are made from insulating material or the wires passing through are insulated and the holder may be constructed in parts or built up in any suit able manner. I
In carrying the invention into effect. in accordance with Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings which is the construction I prefer, the resistance wire 2 is coiled upon a support 16 of refractory material mounted in position at the outer ends of the arms 3 and 4 of the holder which may be provided in metal or other suitable material such as fiber or wood. For this purpose the support 16 is conveniently provided with equally spaced projections 17 or alternatively with collars and of the arms 3 and 4, the two parts being secured together by screws 18 and also by screw threaded collars 19 adapted to engage a screw thread on the-socket portion of the arms intended to receive the tubular support 1. The parts of the holder are suitably formed with recesses or channels for the reception of the leads 11 and 13 and of the switch 8. The switch 8 is conveniently mounted upon a block 20 of insulating material such as fiber which also serves to carry the contact springl and the screws 12 and 21 which form the means of connection to the leads. The leads are'preferably insulated by the use of rubber tubing, asbestos or other suitable material. In order to protect the leads 11 and 13 at the point where they leave the handle 7 a spiral spring 22 is conveniently coiled about them. After the resistance wire 2 has been wound upon the support 16 it is preferably coated with cement as at 23 in order that the convolutions of the wire may be retained in position.
It will be understood that normally the switch 8 is in the position indicated in the drawing. When the cable 10 is connected in an electric circuit the lever of the switch 8 is depressed closing the circuit of the resistance Wire 2 which then becomes heated and transmits its heat to the surrounding silica tube 1. The heat developed may be controlled by means of the switch 8.
I claim:
1. An apparatus for singeing the hair comprising an envelop of refractory material inclosing a resistance wire and carried within a holder, substantially as described. V
2. An apparatus for singeing the hair as set forth 1n claim 1, wherein the resistance wire is wound upon a refractory support, substantially as described.
3. An apparatus for singeing the hair as set forth in claim 1, wherein the holder is formed of symmetrical parts in the manner and substantially as described.
