PATENT OFFiQE.
JAMES JOSEPH SCHMIDT, OF RAHWAY, NEW JERSEY.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
To all whom it may conccm:
Be it known that I, JAMns J. frlorrMrnT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rahway, in the county Of'UIllOIl and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combination tool, and has for its principal object the production of a tool consisting of chisel, an awl, and a punch, all of which are necessary in the printing trade when mounting or unmounting plates upon a wooden base.
Another object of the invention 18 to combine various tools in such a manner that they may be easily and efficiently used while mounting or unmounting printing plates upon a wooden base and also in working on mounted cuts in the printing trade.
Another object of the invention is to pro-- vide a'combination tool having a plurality of shanks radiating from a circular body, one of said shanks being longer than the other so as to act as a handle whereby the tool may be always held invone hand and placed in any desired positlon so as to use the various tools formed upon the ends of the shanks.
A still further object of the invention is to generally improve upon combination tools of this character by providing a device which will be of extremely simple, durable, and inexpensive construction, one which is eflicient and reliable in operation, and well adapted for the purpose for which it is desired.
With these and numerous other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and the combinetion and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of the combination tool Fig. 2 is an edge view of the combination tool, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of a portion of the tool showing the construction of the awl in section.
By referring to the accompanying drawings by numeralsit will be seen that 1 des gnatesthe bodyportion ofthe tool whichI shall call a drum. Radiating from this drum are the chisel indicated generally by the letter C, the awl indicated by the letter A, and the Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 26, 1920. Serial No. 384,376.
punch indicated by the letter P. The awl consists of the shank 2 having a tapering blade so as to terminate in the flat point 3 which is provided with an indenture 3'. The butt l is disposed diametrically opposite the shank 2 upon the drum 1.
The punch P is of the same general construction as the awl A and consists of the shank5 which is tapered to form a point 6, and diametrically disposed on the drum 1 is the butt 7 The chisel C has an elongated shank 8 which is formed at its end so as to provide the blade 9, and it should be noted that this blade 9 has the inclined surface 10 upon one side only thus forming a substantially working edge in which is provided a notch 11 which may be used for pulling small nails and the like. Diametrically opposite the shank 8 there is provided the butt 12 on the drum 1.
I desire to point out'especially that these various tools are arranged so that the shanks thereof are equally disposed from each other and that there are approximately one hundred and twenty degrees between each shank and the same distance between each butt. vVhen using the various tools it will be seen that the hammer will strike the butt diametrically opposed to'the tool desired to be used. It will also be noted thatthe operator will use the elongated shank 8 as a handle for each tool. Thus if it is desired to use the awl A, the operator will hold the tool by means of the shank 8 of the chisel and hammer upon the butt 4:; and if it is desired to use the punch P,the handle or shank 8 will merely have to be twisted and the hammering will be done upon the butt 7. Likewise if it is desired to use the chisel itself, the hammering will be done upon the butt 12,
there being no necessity of the operator grasping the tool at any other point in any of the operations. It should also be noted that this tool is especially designed for use in the printing trade, whereby the chisel point may be forced under the out, which is usually nailed to the block, and thus pry the cut sufliciently so as to loosen the nails, at which time these nails may be engaged by the notch 11 for pulling them out in the wellknown manner. used in placing the plate upon the block.
' From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
The punch and awl are the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood Without a more extended explanation. As numerous changes in form, proportions, and in the minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of this invention, 1 do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described other than as is claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 1. A combination tool comprising a body portion, and a plurality of tool shanks radiating therefrom at equal distances from each other, and a butt disposed on said body portion opposite each shank.
2. A combination tool comprising a drum having a plurality of tool shanks radiating therefrom, a butt disposed on said drum opposite each shank, and one of said shanks being longer than the others so as to form a handle for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES JOSEPH SCHMIDT.
