FOLDING BED AND/OR CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug, 9, 1921.
Application filed September 17, 1920. Serial No. 416,839.-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KALIL FARAI-I, a British subject, of 13 1 Amity street, in the city of Brooklyn, in the State of New York, one of the United States of America, temporarily residing in the city of Toronto, in the county of York and Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds and /or Chairs; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same. I
This invention relates to a folding bed and /or chair, which can be adjusted to any desired position to give the body perfect comfort and ease, and which can be used either as a bed for sleeping or-hospital purposes, or as a rolling chair, sofa, or lounge, the object of the invention being to so construct and assemble the essential parts that they can be conveniently and quickly set in any'desired position.
With this object in view the device consists essentially of a sectional mattress frame comprising a center section consisting of two side bars having downwardly inclined angle iron extensions at each end thereof, a cross brace rigidly connected to said extensions, a
head section hinged to the side bars at one end of the center section, a foot section hinged to the side bars at the other end of the center section, curved gravity racks pivoted to the head and foot sections engaging with the cross braces to hold the head and foot sections in their adjusted position, and legs pivoted to the under side of said extensions to support the mattress frame or fold inwardly beneath it.
The device further consists of a foot sec tion comprising two members pivoted on a rod extending between the side bars, a bar extending between said side bars and a brace extending from said last named bar to the pivot rod.
' The device further consists of a leg rest comprising two members hinged together at their adjacent ends to assume either a horizontal or an inclined position. The outer extremities of the side bars of one of the members are provided'with means for alterably and movably attaching the leg rest to the center section and the outer extremities of the side bars of the other member are provided with racks engaging keepers at the sides of the members of the foot section, these keepers being so arranged as to embrace the racks and hold the members of the leg rest in their set position and to automatically adjust the inclination of the members of the leg rest to the inclination of the members of the foot section of the mattress frame during the adjustment of the latter.
In the drawings:
Figure 1, is a perspective view of the device, showing in full lines'the head section raised above the horizontal and the, individual members of the foot section lowered below the horizontal and showing in dotted lines in the same view one of the members of the foot section raised above the horizontal.
F 1g. 2, is a side elevation of the same,
showing in full lines the center, head,
and foot sections in a horizontal plane and in dotted lines the head and foot sections in a folded position and raised above and below the horizontal, and also showing in the same view the adjustable leg rest, and
Fig. 3, is a fragmentary detail view showing the legs folded under the center section.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawings.
in the construction of this device the mattress frame is preferably constructed of angle iron and consists of a center section a, a head section b and a foot section 0. The head section b is connected to the center section a by means of strap hinges (Z, bolted or riveted to the side bars of these sections at their adjoining ends. The foot section 0 consists of two separate and independent members 0, 0', arranged in substantially parallel planes when in the horizontal position shown in full lines in Fig. 2. Bolted or riveted to the side bars of the center section are hinge straps cl and bolted 0r riveted to the side bars of the members of the foot section are hinge straps c Mounted in the sockets of the hinge straps d is a hinge bar 03, which is arranged transversely to the length of the center section and passes through the sockets of the hinge straps c and thus connects the members of the foot section to the center section. This construction permits of the members of the foot section being adjusted to a horizontal position or to a position above or below the horizontal when extended, or folding into a plane substantially parallel to the center section. This adjustment is advantageous particularly for injured or diseased legs, where it is necessary to maintain one of the legs at a different inclination to the other.
The center section of the mattress frame is supported by legs a, which are adapted to fold beneath it for storage purposes, "and are set at an inclination outwardly and downwardly from the center section. This brings their point of engagement with the floor permit of the device being conveniently moved from place to place.
of the side bars of the'eenter section are provided with downwardly-inclined angle 7 .7 iron leg extensions a, to the under sides of V whichthe upper ends of the legs are connected by pivots e. Thisforms what may 1 be-termed a rule jointbetweeii the legs and the center section of the mattress frame and rigidly braces the legs in their extended position against folding outwardly, but per- I head section than in the case of a heavily mits them to fold inwardly.
To maintain the legs in their extended position, a split pin or other locking device 'e is inserted through the angle iron extensions of the center section and through the legs, thereby preventing them inadvertently folding inwardly beneath'the center section in the event of meeting'an obstruction when being moved. i
Rigidly connected to the angle iron extensions at each end 01"" the center section of the mattress frame, is a' cross bar 7, and
' 'the'cross bar or keeper at the head of the V b g extending between the side bars andbracedconnected to it and to the angle iron extensions are bracesf. 'Rlgldly connected to the cross bar at the foot oi": the center section is an arm f provided with a socket at'its upper end, through which passes the hinge bard, the purpose of this arm being to support the hinge bar at the middle.
Pivoted'to each of the members of the foot section are curved gravity racks g, having notches or ratchet teeth 9 to engage with theirr-espective cross bar, whichthenoperates as a keeper to hold the racks andthe members of the foot sectionin their adjusted position.
Pivoted to the head section arefsim-ilar.
curved gravity racks it, which engage with center section.
Itigildly connected-to. the legs at each end nected to the cross bars and legs are diagonal braces 11. The side bars alot the center section each have a series of holes a v r Movably mounted on the centersection is 1 lapping the outer surfaces of the side bars 0-,arid passing through theapertures of the ratchet teeth Z.
In the preferred construction, the ends these straps and through the apertures (1 are removablepinsk'by which the member r is movably connected, to the'center mattress 7 section. v V
. Theiouter ends of the side-bars of the. member y" are provided with racks Z, having ratchet teeth or notches Z and the outer surfaces of the members of thefoot section of these members can be automatically effected by the adjustment of the members. of
.the occupant of thebed'and the inclination the foot section. The "purpose otthe movable connectionfofthe legrest to the-center mattress section is to provide for its adjust-j ment to persons of ditferentsizes. In'the case of a slightly built person it will be'nec essary to position the leg-rest nearer the built person, and in the latter case the he v-L ier the person the farther the leg rest must be positioned fliOllltllG headsection;
Having-thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secureby LettersPatent is:
l; The hereindescribed device comprising end and middle mattress sections .hiiige dly connected, the middlesection comprising rigid side i-bars having integral rigid downwardly-inclined members at each end there of, rigid crossbrace'ssecured'to the extremities of said members and gravity racks pivoted to the end sections engaging with the cross braces." I V 1 I V 2. A folding bed or ehairhavinga center section comprising side bars, a head section hinged thereto, two foot sections pivoted on a l'OCl extending 'between said sidebars a bar extending between said side barsand a brace extending from said last named bar to saidpivoted-rod. '5 I {3. A foldin'g'bed or chaii'jhavingia center section comprising side bars terminatingin rigid turned down ends, legs pivoted'to said turned down ends, head and foot sections h nged above said turned down fiends-the hinge 'for the'foot section including a rod tions and legs may be folded to positions parallel to said side bars for storage, cross bars for holding the side bars in' position and racks for holding the head and foot sections in adjusted positions, engaging the cross-bars. r Toronto, September 9th,'l920.
