To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, KALIL FARAI-I, a British subject, of 13 1 Amity street, in the city of Brooklyn, in the State of New York, one of the United States of America, temporarily residing in the city of Toronto, in the county of York and Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds and /or Chairs; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same. I

This invention relates to a folding bed and /or chair, which can be adjusted to any desired position to give the body perfect comfort and ease, and which can be used either as a bed for sleeping or-hospital purposes, or as a rolling chair, sofa, or lounge, the object of the invention being to so construct and assemble the essential parts that they can be conveniently and quickly set in any'desired position.

With this object in view the device consists essentially of a sectional mattress frame comprising a center section consisting of two side bars having downwardly inclined angle iron extensions at each end thereof, a cross brace rigidly connected to said extensions, a

head section hinged to the side bars at one end of the center section, a foot section hinged to the side bars at the other end of the center section, curved gravity racks pivoted to the head and foot sections engaging with the cross braces to hold the head and foot sections in their adjusted position, and legs pivoted to the under side of said extensions to support the mattress frame or fold inwardly beneath it.

The device further consists of a foot sec tion comprising two members pivoted on a rod extending between the side bars, a bar extending between said side bars and a brace extending from said last named bar to the pivot rod.

' The device further consists of a leg rest comprising two members hinged together at their adjacent ends to assume either a horizontal or an inclined position. The outer extremities of the side bars of one of the members are provided'with means for alterably and movably attaching the leg rest to the center section and the outer extremities of the side bars of the other member are provided with racks engaging keepers at the sides of the members of the foot section, these keepers being so arranged as to embrace the racks and hold the members of the leg rest in their set position and to automatically adjust the inclination of the members of the leg rest to the inclination of the members of the foot section of the mattress frame during the adjustment of the latter.

in the construction of this device the mattress frame is preferably constructed of angle iron and consists of a center section a, a head section b and a foot section 0. The head section b is connected to the center section a by means of strap hinges (Z, bolted or riveted to the side bars of these sections at their adjoining ends. The foot section 0 consists of two separate and independent members 0, 0', arranged in substantially parallel planes when in the horizontal position shown in full lines in Fig. 2. This construction permits of the members of the foot section being adjusted to a horizontal position or to a position above or below the horizontal when extended, or folding into a plane substantially parallel to the center section. This adjustment is advantageous particularly for injured or diseased legs, where it is necessary to maintain one of the legs at a different inclination to the other.
