Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 5, T9211.
Application filed November 23, 1920. Serial No. 426,012.
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD @-MARTIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Philadel hia, in the county of tPhiladelphia, and tate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bearing-Brasses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in `bearing brasses, and particularly in those brasses designed for use at the rear end of the main connecting rod ofa locomotive. In such uses the ordinary brasses, owing to the continual thrust 0f the connecting rod in opposite directions, are of comparatively short life, being broken at substantially the center of such brasses as a result of the rod thrust.
The present invention is directed to reinforcing such brasses, particularly with a view to overcomin such liability to breakage, and consists 1n casting in the brass proper a reinforce section, which is particularly constructed for strength at the deslrod point, and also with a view of preventing accidental displacement of the reinforce.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in end elevation of cooperating bearing brasses, the improved rcinforce being shown in dotted outline.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the brass.
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view, illustrative of the application of the brass in the locomotive structure.
In the present invention, the brass 1, otherwise of ordinary construction and material, is interiorly provided, preferably in casting, with a reinforce strip of'section 2. This reinforce section is of substantially the full width of .the brass between the edge ianges, and of somewhat less length circumferentially than that of the brass. The respective ends of the reinforce, which are wholly embedded within the brass material, are formed with hook terminals, as 3, to insure a firm interconnection of the reinforce with the material of the brass, and prevent possibility of displacement.
The reinforce is of substantially uniform and similar curvature from the ends toward the center, as at 4, while the central portion is on a curvature of somewhat greater radius, as at 5, whereby such central portion of the .reinforce is of somewhat greater thickness than the end portions.
As previously stated the improved brass is designed particularly for the rear ends of the main connectin rods of locomotives, and that in such use t e brasses, owing to the thrust of such rods, are continually broken across the center of such brass, that is between the ends thereof, as indicated by the line 6. rlfhe improved reinforce is therefore strengthened at such line of `possible breakage, by the thickening described, so that in addition to strengthening the brass as a whole, a particular strain is effectively compensated for.
The material of the contemplated reinforce may be that best adapted for the purpose, though all necessary conditions entering into its use with the ordinary brass material should be taken into consideration in the use of any particular material.
If desired, and as preferred the reinforce may beformed with one or more holes 7 through which the metal of the brass will find its way in casting. A secure holding of the reinforce is thus provided, and the proper and accurate p0sit1on of the reinforce in the brass maintained throughout the life of -V.the same.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
tion embedded therein, said section having hook-ends and being curved adjacent the ends in conformity with the curvature of the brass, the intermediate ortion of the reinforce being thickene whereby when HAROLB G. MARTIN.
