CLOTHES-HANGER.
intenso.
Application filed May 27, 1920.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that l, JOHN H. Sonno, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful linprovements in Clothes- Hangers, of which the following is a specilication. Y
Y This invention relates to clothes hangers,
the objects thereof being to provide a device of this character which embodiesk a foldable and extensible structure adaptable for Vxed attachment outside of a window frame; which is readily operable from the inside of the window; which may be folded to occupy a minimum of lateral space and extended to carry a plurality of clothes lines whereby a very considerable number of pieces may be hung out to dry within a comparatively small space.
The above named and other objects are attained by employing a foldable and extensible framework, means for hanging said framework, means for folding and extending said framework, and pulley-line means for carrying and suspending articles to be dried and'aired, all as hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating an example of my improved clothes hanger showing the same extended for use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the device folded.
In the drawings 1, 1 indicates brackets which are fixed one to each side upright of the window frame, on the outside of the window, and they are respectively provided with an outwardly extended horizontal arm 2; these brackets support a fixed rail 3 which is strengthened by means of a rib 4L.
Engaging the rail 3 are two horizontal slides 5, respectively having an upright part 6; threaded through these upright parts is a screw shaft 7 having a right-hand thread 8 and a left-hand thread 9, the right hand thread engaging one slide and the left hand thread the other, whereby rotary movement of the shaft moves said slides in opposite directions, the ends of said shaft being journaled through studs 10 which are fixed to the brackets 1.
To the outer horizontal parts of the slides Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 31, 1921. Serial No. 384,637.
l pivot the inner ends of crossed rods 11, roiining part of a folding and extensible lazy-tongs construction 12, having its outwai'dly extended members 13 in pivotal engagement with slides 141 of a rail 175, said rail having` a rib 16 extended longitudinally thereacross. This rail 15 is supported, when the lazy-tongs construction is extended, by means of guy ropes or chains 17 which engage thetwo ends of the rib 1G and extend to fastening means as screw eyes 1S, fixed to the upper uprights of the window frame, or to the wall of the building.
is a means for operating the slides 5 and 111, of the lazy tongs whereby said tongs may be alternately folded and extended, I fix to the shaft 7, a bevel gear wheel 19, which meshes with a similar bevel gear wheel 20. mounted on a lateral shaft 21, said shaft bei ing Journaled through astandard 28 which is fixed to the window sill, and provided with afoldable extension 22, having a crank 24C which extends within the window when the crank is in use and is adapted to be folded at right angles to the shaft 21 and out of the path of the window sashes when not in use.
lixed to the rib l of the rail 3, is a plurality of pulleys 25; a similar number of pulleys 26 being secured to the rib 16 of the rail 15. rfhese pulleys support endless clothes lines 27, which are stretched taut when the device is extended, and they hang loosely when the device is folded.
ln the operation and use of the invention, when the structure is not being employed it is folded as shown by Fig. 3 of the drawings. rllhen when it is desired to hang washed articles out to dry the operator straightens out the crank shaft and revolves the beveled wheel 20, whereby through the medium of the bevel gear wheel 19, the shaft 7 is rotated until the slides are moved into position shown by Fig. 1 of the drawings, with the lazy tongs extended and the rail 15 carried outwardly to the utmost extent, the outward movement however, being limited by the length of the guy ropes or chains 17 and the clothes lines 27. Washed articles may then be readily attached to the lines 27, and owing to the number of said lines employed a considerable quantity of wash may be hung within a limited space.
l do not wish to confine myself to the specific form and arrangement of the mechanical parts as herein shown and de scribed, as I believe that I am entitled to the use of slight variations without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A clothes hanger comprising a fixed rail, a rail adapted to be projected away from said fixed rail, andmeans supporting said fixed rail, and a foldable and extensible framework having slides on its respective inner and' outer end members, the slides of the inner end engaging said fixed rail, and the slides of the outer end engaging said movable rail, and means for operating said slides whereby the framework may be foldj ed and extended.
2. A clothes hanger comprising a Afixed rail, a rail adapted to be projected away from said fixed rail, and a foldable and extensible framework having slides on its respective inner and outer end members, the slides of the inner end engaging said fixed rail, and the slides 0f the outer end engaging said movable rail, and a right and left hand screw-shaft engaging the slides of the fixed rail, and means for turning said shaft whereby said slides may be given reciprocating movement for folding and extending the framework. v
3. A Clothes hanger comprising a fixed rail, a rail adapted to be projected away from' said fixed rail, and means supporting said fixed rail, a lazy-tongs framework having slides on its respective end members, two of said slides engaging said xed rail and the other two engaging said movable rail, and a right and left hand screw-shaft engaging the slides of the fixed rail, and a gear wheel and crank means for turning said shaft whereby said slides may be given reciprocating movement for folding and extending the lazy-tongs framework7 and pulley line means on said rails for suspending articles.
Signed of New York and State of New York, thia 17 day of'May, A. D. 1920.
