IMPROVEMENT IN coNvER'rIBLE FREIGHT-cms.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. lhgi, dated April 15, 1873; application filed November 11, 1871.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM WoRsLEv, of Little Falls, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Grain-Oar, of which the following is a specification y The invention consists iu an improvement of grain cars, as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

Figure lis a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved grain-car, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

A represents two side pieces, and B two end pieces, of a hoppershaped bottom, meeting' each other on the lines C, where they will fit snugly together, or overlap by a sheet or strip of thin metal placed on one part; or, as I prefer, the whole bottom will be covered with sheet metal, which, being smoother than wood, will admit of the bottom being moreiiat than if made of wood. These sections are provided with supports J at the high ends to rest on the permanent door of the car and give the necessary pitch to the bottom.

In this example I have represented the oor as only made of four sections, but in practice will increase the number of sections as may be necessary to facilitate the handling of them.

D is the swiveling elbow-spout attached to a vertical nozzle, E, fixed in the permanent bottom of the car below the discharge=openin g of the detachable hopper-bottom, said spout being arranged on said nozzle so that it can be shifted readily to discharge at either side of the car. F is the gate for closing the dis charge, and G the lever for operating it. This lever is detachably connected to the slide; also to the pivots H, of which there are two, so that it can be shifted to either side when the spout is shifted.

I propose to have holes I in the car, with hatches to close them, through which holes the car will be loaded by spouting in the grain. The hatches will be fitted upon ribs K, raised slightly above the top of the car to keep out the rain.

Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- `l. The V-shaped detachable sections A B applied toV a grain-car, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The nozzle E, combined, as described, with swiveled elbow-spout, so that the grain may be discharged on either side of car from the same nozzle.
