Application filed July 27', 1920. Serial No. 399,234.
To all 'who/m; t may concern.'
Be it known that I, MIKE SARBIJ, a citizen of Ukraine, residing at Ludlow, in thev county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, haveinvented certain new and use ful Improvements in Door-Locks, of which the following is a specification.L
rlhe present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in door locks and particularly to thatk class of lock that employs a manually shiftable locking bolt, operable only from one sideof the door with means for retaining the locking bolt in its operative and inoperative positions.V
IV ith the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described andrshown in the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, j.
Figure l is a fragmentary front elevational view of st portion of a door andjamb with the present form of lock built therein,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line II-*II of Fig. l,
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View taken on line 'III-III of Fig. 2 showing the lock bolt projected and retained in locked position,
Fig. 4f is a horizontal sectional View taken on lineI IV--IV 0f Fig. 3 showing the star wheel engaging the rack portion of the bolt for shifting the same,
Fig. 5 is a detail fragmentary view, partly in section showing the locking bolt in retracted inoperative position, and
Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the locking bolt, removed from the casing.
Briefly described, the present invention has for its primary object to provide a lock for doors and the like, wherein the bolt is manually shiftable in opposite directions and operable from one side of the door. The bolt is slidably mounted in a casing provided in the door and has the nose portion thereof projected into a keeper provided in the door jalnb. One face ofthe bolt is pro vided with teeth and is adapted to -be engaged by a gear or star wheel for shifting the bolt to its operative and inoperative positions. A latch device operable from within the door positively holds the bolt in either of its positions.
Referring more vin detail to the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated a por- Y tion of a door indicated bythe reference character l and a portion of af door janib indicated by the reference characterl 2. The
edge'of the door jamb 2 is provided with ak bolt keeper opening 3. with a face plate #l countersunk in the edge of the jamb and having an opening therein vregistering with the socket 3.
A lock mechanism is carried' by the door ll andvincludes a casing positioned within an opening in the door and formed of side walls 5, a detachable'rear wall 6a bottom wall T and a forward wall 8 that'lies flush with the edge of the door l and has an opening 9- therein that registers with the keeper socket Spin the top jamb 2. The form of bolt employed in the lock is shown in detailin Figs.
2 and' 6, as being substantially H-shaped in cross section defining opposite spaced flanges l0, a forward reduced nose 1l anda series of teeth 12 upon the upper face thereof. The
opposed faces of the side walls 5 of the lock are'provided with guides 13 extending between the flanges l() on each sider of the bolt to provide a guide for the sliding movements of the bolt. The means for manually shifting the bolt includes` a stub shaft let rectangular in cross section and inserted through alined openings 'l5 and 16 in the door 1 at opposite sides of the lock casing and retained therein by the screw plug 17 as shown in Fig. 2. A gear or star wheel 18 is carried by a hub 19 having a rectangular bore through which the rectangular shaft 14 projects while the inner projecting end of the shaft 14 is provided with an operating knob 20.
In order to maintain the bolt 1l in either its'operative or inoperative position, a latch device is associated therewith and includes pin 2l slidably projecting'through the tubular housing 22 carried Vby the bottom wall 7 of the casing and having a. disk 23 fixed thereon and engaged by a coil spring 24 surrounding the pin within the housing 22 to project the pin upwardly while a cutout portion 25 is formed in the inner face of the door 1 to provide a clearance space for the lower handle end 26fof the pin 2l. As shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 5, the lower face of the bolt 1l is provided with a lug 2T for engagement by the kpin 21. The lug 2T .is of elongated form having straight end either end wall when the bolt lO is shifted in either direction, this construction permitting the finger grip 26 being released while the spring 2li maintains the pin in engagement with the lug to insure the locking position thereof when the lug is moved to a position to present either end wall thereof laterally of the pin.
In the operation of the device, the lock being operable only from one side of the door, the handle 26 is grasped to lower the pin 2l against the tension of the spring 2l and to remove the pin from engagement with the end wall of the bolt lug 2T. ldlhen so positioned, rotation of the knob in either direction will cause a reciprooation of the bolt 9 by the star wheel 18 upon the shaft let engaging the rack face l2 ot the bolt. The latch pin 2l riding over `the curved lower wall oi' the lug is forced by the spring 2 to move upwardly for engagement with either end wall of the lug 27, the pin engaging the lug as illustrated in Fig. 3 to hold the bolt in its locked position, while in F ig. 5, the vbolt is illustrated as retained in its retracted inoperative position. This form of lock may be alone employed as a retainingmeans for a door or similar structure, or the device may be employed as a night latch attachment for a door or the like provided with the usual tensioned latch bolt.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
lVhat is claimed as new is y 1. A lock of the type described comprising a casing, a bolt slidable therein, teeth formed upon one side of the bolt, a gear wheel engaging said teeth for shiftingthe bolt, means for holding the bolt in its operative and inoperative positions, said means comprising a tensioned pin carried by the lock casing and an elongated lug having a curved bottom face carried by the bolt 'adapted to be engaged by the pin.
2. A lock of the type described comprisin'ga casing, a bolt slidable therein, teeth formed upon one side of the bolt, a gear wheel engaging said teeth for shifting the bolt, means forholding the boltin its operative and inoperative positions, said means including a tensioned pin slidably projecting through the bottom wall of the lock casing, an operating handle for said pin, a lug carried by the underside of said bolt and adapted to be engaged'by said pin for holding the bolt in its operative and inoperative positions.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
