HAIR-CLIPPER.

Be it known that I, Gnonen A. LA Fon- AINE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair-Clippers, of wiiich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to and has for a irincipal object the provision of combined manual and power operated clipper having a head and grip device rotatable about the vertical axis of the clipping knives and blades for adjusting the clippers to suit-able and COIlYtBlllGlltpositions about the head of a person on whom the clippers are being used.
A further object is to provide in a device of the character referred to means whereby the operation of the device may be selectively changed from one to the other operating means mentioned without removal or substitution of any of the parts.
Another object is to provide means for locking the head and grips of the device in selected positions relative to the cutting blades. Other objects will appear as the description progresses.
Referring particularly to the drawings forming a part of this application and appended hereto, in which one practical embodiment of my invention is illustrated:

Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on line 33 of Fig. 1;

Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary section of the manually operable driving device, and a portion of one of the grips.
ll ith the foregoing brief description of my improved device and the drawings thereof, I will now describe in detail the structure and operation of a preferred form of device as shown in said drawings, reference characters being employed throughout the description and in the several views of the said drawings for indicating the same and like parts.

a movable blade M, slidably held thereon, a head H, a stationary handle or grip 1, and a movable handle, or grip 2.
The usual blades S and M, have teeth T and T formed on the opposite sides thereof of different pitch and character, preferably, and the movable blade M has a pair of depending lugs 3, 8, which slidably engage a longitudinal.v groove 1 disposed in the approximate center of the stationary blade S, whereby the blade H may be guided in its longitudinal movement over the upper portion of stationary blade S.
The upper side of movable blade M has a pair of parallel longitudinal grooves 5, 5, formed therein near the roots of the teeth T and T, which are adapted to be engaged by tongues 6, 6, formed on the lower side of a stationary plate P, which is interposed be tween the movable blade M and the head H. The members S, M and P, are thus held in longitudinal alineinent by means of the structural details described, at all times, and may not be disarranged except by the removal of the parts as hereinafter described.
The plate P has an anular flange 7 extending above the upper side thereof which is provided with a plurality of notches 8, 8, etc, on the upper edge, an opening 9, being provided through the plate P internally of the flange 7 as shown.
The head H and stationary handle 1 are integrally formed, preferably, the head consisting of an annular wall 10 for inclosing the operating parts and a top Wall 11 having an opening 12 therein to receive a pin 13, said opening and said pin having flattened portions 14, and 14, respectively, formed therein for preventing the turning of the pin in the head. Pin 13 has a head 15 adapted to be countersunk in the bottom of the stationary blade S and said pin extends vertically through blades S and M and the interior of head H and substantially above wall 11, a spring washer 16 and a knurled thumb nut 17 being provided on the upper end thereof for holding all of said parts together. It will be observed that the washer 16 will afford a resiliency between the parts so that the blades S and M will be frictionally held together.
The movable handle 2, is pivotally attached at 18 to the portion 19 of the handle 1 by means of a bolt 20, and a fiat spring 21 is attached at one end to the inner side of the handle 1 and the free end thereof seats in a recess22 in the handle 2 and serves to 7 hold the said handles spaced apart normally, as shown in Fig. 1.
Blade M is reciprocated over the upper surface of blade S, by means of a pair of bevel gears 23 and 24, operably held within the head I-I, gear 23 being carried loosely on the pin 13 and gear 24 being carried on a horizontal shaft 25 in a bearing 26 in the wall 10 of said head so as to properly mesh "with and drive the gear 23.
An eccentric portion 27 is formed on or attached to the lower hub portion of gear 23 and is adapted to operate in an elongated slot 28 formed transversely of the movable bladeM, as shown in Fig. 4;. Thus it will seen that as shaft 25 is rotated by any suitable means, the gear 23 will be rotated by means of its connection with gear 24 on said shaft and the rotation of the eccentric 27 will reciprocate the blade M over blade S so that the teeth T and T will have a shearing action.
Handle member 1 has a bifurcated lug 29,
' formed thereon and extending inwardly to a line paralleling the axis of shaft 25 and a shaft 30 is carried in said extension which is adapted to be connected with shaft 25 by means of a universal member 31 having couplings '31 and 33 interposed between the parts at the angles, the shaft 30 being dis posed in alinement with shaft 25, but substantially elevated thereabove.
An operating arm 32 is carried on the shaft 30 and is connected at its lower end with a lug 34 on handle member 2 by means of a link 35, said arm having a flat spring 36, attached to the side thereof which has a pin 37 on one end thereof adapted to engage a slot 39 in shaft 30, so that the operation of the arm by means of its connection with handle 2, against'the tension of the spring v21, willturn the shaft 30 and the gears 23 and 2 k backward and forward to a corresponding extent. lVhen it is desired to operate said device by power means, a power shaft 40 may be inserted in a bearing in the lug 29 so that a tongue on the power shaft will seat in the slot 39 of shaft 30 and thus disengage the pin 37 of arm 32 from the slot 39. The power shaft 40 may be held in position by means of a flat spring 11 having a detent 42 on the end thereof resiliently engaging an annular groove43 in said shaft.
It will be noted from the foregoing that the change from manual topower operating means is quickly made and the substitution of one for the other disengages the other automatically.
The head -H and grips 1 are rotatable about the axis of pin 13 for properly positioning the instrument for use. The device may be locked in any selected position by means of a semi-circular band 44 attached at one end to the wall 10 of head H by a screw 45 and having a tooth 46 on the opposite end adapted to engage one or the other of the notches 8 in the flange 7 of plate P. The free end of said band is forced inwardly from contact with the wall 10 by means of a small knob 47 operating in a suitable aperture in said wall, so that the tooth 46 may be disengaged from one of the notches preparatory to changing the position of the head relative to the blades. The band is spring like and will return to normal position when the pressure is released for locking the head in selected positions.
While I have shown and described a preferred form of device, it is to be understood that I may alter the form and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit or enlarging the scope of my invention, except as I may be limited by the appended claims.
What I claim is:
' 1. In a hair clipping device, the combination with relatively stationary and movable blades, of a head removably and adjustably held .on said blades, a stationary grip member integral with said head, relatively movable grip member for operating said movable blade, and means for automatically disconnecting said grip member by the substitution of power driven means for said blade.
2. In a hair clipping device, the combination with relatively stationary and movable blades, of a head removably and adjustably held on said blades, a stationary grip member integral with said head, a relatively movable grip member for operating said movable blade, at power driven element adapted to be connected therewith, and means for disconnecting said grip member therefrom when said power element is so connected? 3. In a hair clipping device, the combina tion with relatively stationary and movable blades, of a head removably held thereon, means for revolubly adjusting said head relative to said blades, operating means for said movable blade, manually operable means for connection with said operating means, a power driven element, and means for automatically disconnecting said manually operable means when said power driven element is connected with said operating means, as set forth.
