Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, AMY LILLAN llunn STONE-JONES, a sub'ect ot the King of England, residing at ondon, England, have invented certain new and useful improvements in and Relating to Apparatus for Playing Games and for Physical Culture, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to toys and physical culture devices which may be employed to play various games as well as for the development of the muscles and consists of an animals head provided with a flexible neck containing one or more springs secured to a board or plate 03: wood, leather or other suitable material provided with straps or equivalent means by which it may be secured to any suitable object such as the back of a chair, the foot-board of a perambulator or the like on or in which a child may sit and pretend she is driving a horse or other animal. The improved toy may in some cases be secured to another child.

In some cases the neck may be provided with a squeaker or like device adapted to make a noise similar to that of the animal represented when the reins are pulled.

According to a modified construction the board or plate may be dispensed with and the neck connected directly to a model horse, provided with proper saddle and stirrups, in which case stronger springs may be employed in the neck so as to exercise the arm muscles when the reins are pulled.

I will now. proceed to more particularly describe my invention with the aid of the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a horses head and neck embodying the present improvements, part of which is torn away to show its construction.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the improved toy strapped to the back of a chair and a child playing with it.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a childs perambulator with the improved toy clamped to the front thereof.

According to the construction illustrated b Figs. 1 and 2 the animals head a is pro vlded with a flexible neck Z) of plush or other suitable iabric within which is situated a spring 0 which connects the said head with a board or plate ((3 of wood or other suitable material. According to the construction shown in Fig. 3 the backboard e is provided with a clamp is by means of which it may be attached to the foot of the perambulator Z. With this arrangement the child is enabled to play at horses while being wheeled about.

In Fig. lthe improved head is applied to a rocking horse and affords the child an opportunity to exercise her muscles at the same time as she is playing.

According to this construction, the head is provided with a stem an adapted to slide in a socket n and is maintained in its outward position by a spring 0 of suitable strength which is compressed when the child pulls the reins 9'.

According to the modification illustrated by Fig. 5 the socket n is formed in the head and the stem m is mounted on a block 7) at tached to the body of the animal by strong flat springs g which enable the head to be pulled to theright or to the left when it is desired to exercise the muscles of one arm at a time. This construction is also adapted for use with apparatus for teaching older children to ride horse-back.

Although this invention has been described in conjunction with. a horses head it is obvious that the heads of other draft animals can be substituted in which case a device of known construction adapted to make an appropriate noise may be situated in a position to be operated when the reins are pulled.

I claim:

1. Improvements in apparatus for playing games and for physical culture, eomprising an animals head, a flexible neck, a block, a resilient element Within said neck connecting said head to the aforesaid block, means of securing said block to a convenient support and reins connected to the sides of the animals head to enable it to be moved against the resistance of the resilient element, substantially as set forth.

2. Improvements in apparatus for playing games and for physical culture, comprising an animals head, a flexible neck, a block, a stem on said head, a socket formed in said blockfor said stem to slide in, a spring to urge said stem in an outwardly direction, means of securing said block to a convenient support and reins connected to the sides of the animals head to enable it to be moved against the resistance of the aforesaid spring substantially as set forth in the specification.

Improvements in apparatus for playing games andfor physical culture, compris- 111g an animals head, a block, a stem on one of these parts, a socket formed in the other for said stem to slide in, a flexible neck, a spring-controlled coupling connecting said block to a plate, a spring to urge said head in an outwardly direction, means of securing said plate to a convenient support and reins connected to the sides of the animals headto enable it to be moved against the resistanceof the aforesaid springs, substantially as set forth in the specification.

4. Improvements in apparatus for playing games and for physical culture, comprising an animals head, a flexible neck, a block. -a resilient element within said neck connecting said head to the aforesaid block, a squeaker between theaforcsaid head and block and in a position to be operated when the head is moved, means of securing said block to a convenient support and reins con nected to the sides of the animals head to enable it to be moved against the resistance of the aforesaid spring, substantially as set forth in the specification.

5. Improvements in apparatus for playing games and for physical culture, comprising an animals head, a block, a stem on one of these parts, a socket formed in the other for said stem to slide in, a flexible neck, the body of an animal, a. spring-controlled coupling connecting said block to said body, a spring to urge said head in an outwardly direction, and reins connected to the sides of the animals head to enable it to be moved against the resistance of the aforesaid springs, substantially as set forth in the specification.
