WASHING MACHINE- APPLICATION FILED JUNE 11. I920.
Patented Feb. 1, 1921.
2 SHEETSSHEET 2- stratum;
UNITED STATES JOSEPH s'rRY roL, or sour BEND, INDIANA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Application filed June 11,
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH STRXKUL, a citizen of the United Eltates'ofAmerica, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. dbseph and State of Indiana; have invented certain new and useful Improvements inWashing-h lachines, of which the following is a specification. a
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in washing machines and particularly to that type that is driven by anelectric motor or other power device and embodying a rotating clothes containing cylinder. 7 i i A further obiect of the invention is to pro vide in a clothes washing machine, a motor driven clothes containiiigdrum withina casingwitha burner attachment arranged adjacent the bottom wall of thecasing for heating the fluid contents.
' Astill further object of the invention resides in the provision of a motor driven washing machine with a novel form of clutch device between the motor and clothes containing cylinder that is operable to per emit the removal of the cylinderf rom the supnorting casing. a a a With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the several views;
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a washing machine constructed in accordance with the present invention showing the burner attachment beneath the casing,
Fig. 2 is a horizontal longitudinal sec tional view of the device,
Fig. 3 is an end elevational View,
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view,
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view showing the driving ear and clutch mechanism for rotating the inner cylinder,
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view similar to Fig. 5 and F 7 is a cross sectional View taken on line VIl-VII of Fig. 5 showing the clutch shitting lever.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated a washing machine embodying a casing 1,
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1 1921. 1 29. Serial No. 388,135. 7 i i grew OFFICE.
preferably rectangular in cross section as drumis ournaled within the casing land is driven a by a motor 8 controlled bythe switch 9 and mounted upon the bracket 10 carried bv one end wall of the casing 1. A stuh shaft li is ournaled in-the' lower end of the casing 1 as shown in Fig 1 and carries a relatively large sprocket wheel 12 over which a sprocket ehain li-lpasses, the oppositelooped end of the sproclretchain 13 passing over the sprocket wheel 14 carried by the shatter the motor 8. A pinion 15 is fixed to the shaft 11 inwardly oi the sprocket wheel 12 and is in constant mesh with the relativelylargcgear wheel 16, the mountingof which is more clearly shown in Figs. 5 to 7.
The endwall of the casing 1 is provided with an outwardly dircctedannular flange 17 that rotatably receives the tubular hub 1 8 Offdlhfl gear 16, the periphery of the hub 18 helng provided with an annular groove for freely receiving the inner end of the retaining screw 19. A stub" axle 20 is journaled within an opening in the wall of the casing 1 inwardly of the flange 17 and is keyed to the gear 16 as at 21, the gear 16 and axle 21 revolving in unison within the casing flange 17. The inner end of the stub shaft 20 carries a block 22 having a vertical slot 23 therein with lugs 24 depending from the block 22 beneath the slot. A reversed L shaped lever embodying a vertical leg 25 has the lower end thereof pivoted within the lugs 24 and extending upwardly as at 26 into the slot 23 provided in the axle block 22. A spring 27 is arranged between the rear wall of the slot 23 and the end 26 of the lever and is in engagement with a clutch block 28 for normally forcing the same outwardly of the block slot 23.
The clothes containing drum includes a cylinder 29 provided with perforations over the cylindrical surface thereof, and is rotatably mounted within the casing 1. The end wall of the casing 1 opposite the motor mechanism is provided with a block bearing gagement with the clutch face formed upon the disk 35 extending over the opening 3a.
In the operation of the device, assuming that water or other cleaning fluid is contained within the receptacle 1 and the articles to be cleaned are within the cylinder 29, the motor 8 is put into operation and by the chain and sprocket mechanism and meshing gears, rotary motion is indicated to the cylinder 29; W hen it is desired to remove the cylinder from the casing 1, thevertical leg of the lever 25-is operated to move upon the pivot 24: to shift the inner end 26 thereof carrying the clutch block 28 from engagement with the clutch disk 35, at which time the cylinder may be: moved vertically through the open upper 'end of the casing. The fluid within the casing is heated by the burner Land the casing is drained by means of'the outlet spout. 36 shown in Fig. 1. The clothes cylinder 29 is replaced in the casing 1 by positioning the pin 33 in the socket 32 and by withdrawing the clutch block 28 until the same registers with the opening 34: in the end wall of the cylinder 29, at which time the spring 27 will force the clutch blockinto the opening and into engagement with the clutch faceof the disk 35.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Nhat is claimed as new is:
1. A washing machine comprising a casing, bearing blocks mounted in the end walls of the casing, a rotatable cylinder supported on said bearing blocks, one of said blocks be ing rotatable in the casing wall, means for rotating said block, cooperating axially alined clutch members carried by the rotatable bearing and cylinder with the cylinder supported on the clutch member carried by the bearing, and an arm projecting from the clutch member carried by the rotatable bearing to disengage the same from the axial clutch member on the rotating cylinder to permit removal of the cylinder.
2. A washing machine of the character described comprising a casing, bearing blocks carried by the end walls of the casing, a cylinder rotatably supported in said bearing blocks, one of said bearing blocks being fixed to the casing end and the other of said bearing blocks bcingrotatably mounted and extending at opposite sides of the carrying end wall and having a transverse opening therein, a gear fixed to the outer projecting end thereof, an angle lever pivotally mounted on said block and extending into the transverse opening, and cooperating clutch devices carried by the lever within the block opening and the end of the cylinder.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
