ALARM DEVICE.

Be it known that I, ANTHONY J. N Rns- Tivo., a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and .State of New York, have invented new and usei'ul Improvements in Alarm Devices, oit which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to alarm devices, particularly to those of the electric type, and has for its object the provision of an alarm device adapted for association with either a door or window whereby upon opening the door or window a circuit will be closed through an electric bell or other audible signal whereby to apprise the occupants of a building or the like that an entry has been accomplished, the device being particularly adapted for use as a burglar alarm.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character' which, when set in action by the opening of a door or window, will continue to sound an alarm until a properly authorized person releases the mechanism, thealarm sounding continually even though the door or window be subsequently closed, the device being consequently tamper-proof.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character ,which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly elicient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which` Figure 1 is an elevation of my device,

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a suitable base plate upon which is mounted a frame 11 carrying a pair of electromagnets 12 which are connected. The ends 13 of the cores of the magnets l2 project, as shown.

flexible metal and secured upon this strip isnan armature 16 which is normally spaced slightly from the projecting ends of the electro-magnet cores. This strip 15 is formed angular in shape, as shown, and at one angle is provided with the lip 16a.
Extending from the base 10 is a suitable post 17 upon which is pivoted, as shown at 18, an arm 19, angular' in shape, carrying a weight 20. This arm i9 carries at the opposite side of its pivot 18, an angular flange 21 which normally engages the lip 16a. Also carried by the arm 19 adjacent the flange 21 is a contact 22 which is adapted to be moved into engagement 'with the member 15.
Connected with the contact 23 is a wire 25 which is connected to a binding post 26 secured upon and insulated from the base 10. The armature strip 15 is grounded upon the base as is also a suitable binding post 28 carried by the base. Binding posts 29 and 30 are connected with the ends of the electro-magnet windings 12.
In conjunction with my device is used a circuit closer structure which is of common form and which is shown in the detail views as formed of contacts arranged between a door and its frame or between a sash and a window casing, the arrangement being such that the contacts will engage when the door or window is opened. I make no claim of novelty in the construction of this circuit closer. In the use of my device I install the mechanism at any point desired and use, in connection therewith an alarm which may be an ordinary electric bell, as shown at B and also make use of a suitable battery or other source of current C. A wire 31 is connected with one terminal of the circuit closing device A and is connected with the binding post 30. A wire 32 is connected with the other terminal of the circuit closer and is connected with the binding post 26. A branch wire 33 is connected with the wire 32 and with one terminal of the source ofcurrent C which has its other terminal connected by a wire 341 with the binding post 29. A branch wire 35 is connected 34 and with one terminal of the bell B which has its other terminal connected with the binding post 28.
In the operation of the device with the parts arranged as shown and described, in the event that a door or window equipped with the circuit closer A, is opened the con- `gage the stationary tact members in the lcircuit closer will engage whereupon current will flow from the source C, through the circuit closer and through the electromagnet coils 12. rllhe electro-magnets being thus energized, will cause the armature 16 to move toward the ends 13 of the magnet cores. As this is done the lip 16a will move into non-obstructing relation with respect to the flange 21 so that the weight 20 will cause the arm 19 to swing downwardly. As this arm thus moves the contact member 22 carried thereby willencontact member 23 whereupon 'current will flow 'from the source through the bell B, thus giving an audible alarm that an intrusion has been attempted. It will be observed that weven though the door oi' window be subsequently closed to return the circuit closer Ato normal position, the alarm, that is the bell, will continue to sound until an authorized person restores the arm 19 to `normal position with the lip 16a engaging the flange 21.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that l have thus 4provided an extremely simple and inexpensive device which will be highly etlicient in operation, which will be not likely to vget out of order and which will eliiciently produce an audible alarm which cannot be discontinued except by adjustment of the parts by an authorized person.
While l have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is ot course to be understood that reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the 4spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, claim:
A circuit closer comprising a base, a frame mounted thereon, an electro-magnet supported by said trame, a flexible strip secured at one end upon said trame and carrying an armature adapted to be attracted by the electro-magnet, a lever pivoted upon the base and having its end farthest Jirom the 'frame weighted, a lip on said strip, a flange on said lever, and a contact on the base spaced from the strip when the magnet is denergized and the lip is engaged by said Hange, energizatioii of the magnet resulting in attraction of the armature and strip to disengage the lip from the flange whereby engagement of the other end of the lever with the strip will move thejstrip into engagement with said contact.
