Description

n. mormsow. FOUNTAIN PEN LOCKING CLIP.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 8. NH).
Pafented June 29, 1920.
' JUNITED -s'mr121s DAVID F. JOHNSON, OF FORT PATENT OFFICE.
WASHINGTON, MARYLAND.
FOUNTAIN-PEN-LOCKING CLIP.
Application filed October 8,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID F. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Washington, in the county of Prince Georges and State'of Maryland, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-PeneLocking Clips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
' clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements infountain pen locking clips and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character which will posi- .tively lock the closure cap to the body of the pen When the pen is supported in .a. pocket by the clip thereby obviating the danger of the body of the pen becoming detached or separated from the cap'when carrying the parativelylow cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists incertam novel features of constructlon, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described .and claimed. i
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is'to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:-
' Figure 1, isa vertical sectional view of a fountain pen locking clip constructed in ac--' cordance with. my invention and illustrating the same applied to the wall of a pocket,
Fig. '2- is a similar View with the pen removed from the pocket,
. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the cap illustrating a modified form of locking other modified form'of my invention.
element,
Fig. 4 1s a similar view llustratlng an-.
1919. Serial No. 329,298.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates as an entirety a fountain pen consisting of a body 2 carrying the usual pen 3 which is adapted to be protected by a closure cap 4 when not using the pen. The closure cap 4 is of ordinary construction and adapted to have frictional contact with the body 2 and has secured thereto a clip 5 by a rivet 6. The clip 5 consists of a spring arm 7 having a ball or sphere 8 formed on its free end which is adapted. to press against the wall 9 of a pocket when the pen is positioned within the pocketand which prevents the cap from becoming detached from the pocket. h
The body 2 adjacent the pen 3 is provided with a reduced neck 10 and the cap 4 is provided with an opening 11 adjacent the neck 10 to permit a locking element 12 car- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 29, 1920. Y I
ried by the cap to move through the cap for engagement with the reduced neck 10 of, the
body' 2 to prevent the cap 4 frombecom I ing accidentally disconnected from the body 2. The locking element 12 consists of a resilient arm 13 secured to the cap 4 and extends over the opening 11 and has formed thereon a locking head 14 of elongated formation. The normal position of the head 14 is out of engagement with the neck 10 of the body 2 and in engagement with the arm 7 of the clip 5 and when the clip 5 is placed over the wall 9 of the pocket, the wall forces the head 14 of the locking element inwardly of the cap against the neck 10 by the pressure of the spring arm 7 of the clip 5 thus firmly locking the cap 4 to the body 2 of the pen. As soon as the penis removed from the pocket, the pressure on the locking element isreleased and it automatically disengages from the body 2 permitting the cap 4 to be removed from the body so that the pen can be used. i
Referring to ion as shown in ig. 3, the locking element my'modified form of inven- 15 is formed integrally with the cap 4 having thearm portion v16-dis'posed over the openin 11 and has secured thereto a pad 17, which; pad is adapted to move into the cap'whe'n the arm 16 is placed under pres- .sure to engage the neck 10 of the body 2.
InFig. 4 I have shown a lockingelement l8 -formed integrally with the cap and mo vided with an elongated head 19 which is adapted to be moved through the opening for' engagement with the neck 10 of the body 2 by the pressure of the wallof the 3 pocket thereon, and which pressure is created by the clip bearing or gripping the wall of the pocket. The clip in all instances is disposed directly over the locking element.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A locking clip comprising a locking element carried by the cap of the pen, and a clip overlying the locking element and secured to the cap and adapted to force the locking element into engagement with the body of the pen when the clip is place over the wall of a pocket.
2. A pen locking clip including a cap having an opening, a locking element carried by the cap and having its free end overlying the opening, and a clip secured to the cap and overlying the locking element for forcing the free'end of the same through the opening and in engagement with the body of a pen when said clip is placed over,
the wall of a pocket.
3. A pen locking clip including a caphaving an opening, a resilient arm carried by the cap, a head formed on said arm and overlying the opening, and a clip secured to the cap and overlying the head and arm for forcing the head through the opening and into engagement with the body of a pen when said clip is placed over the wall of a pocket.
4. A pen locking clip including a cap having an opening, a resilient arm carried by the clip and extending in the direction of the opening, an elongated head formed on said arm and disposed over the opening, and a clip secured to the cap and overlying the head and resilient arm for forcing the'head through the opening and into an engagement with the reduced neck of the body of a pen when said clip is placed over the Wall of a pocket.
5. A pen locking clip including a cap having an opening, a resilient arm carried by said cap, an elongated pad secured to the free end of the arm and overlying the opening, and a clip secured to the cap and overlying the arm and head for forcing the head through the opening and in engagement with the body of a pen when said clip is placed over the Wall of a pocket.
6. The combination with a writing implement and a cap therefor, of a clip, and an element adapted when in one position to lock the cap to the implement and when in another position to release the cap, said element normally occupying the latter position and adapted to be moved into the former position by the wall of a pocket when the clip is placed over said wall.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of a witness.
DAVID F. JOHNSON.
