Be it known that I, GEORGE A. LAFON TAINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Iedro, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair- Clippers, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to hair clippers and particularly to a form of clippers adapted to be operated by power supplied from a motor or the like, and the primary object thereof is to provide an improved form of clippers having means for reciprocating the cutting blades and for applying power from an external source thereto.
A further object is to provide a clipper of the character referred to having a pair of relatively movable blades and means for supporting said blades in reversible relation to each other, so that the same may be turned for operation at right angles to or parallel with the handle.
Aanother object is to provide means for locking and firmly holding the cutting blades in a selected position when the same are moved to either of the positions referred to, and to provide means for removably holding all of the parts of the clippers together so that the mechanism may be readily disassembled. for the purpose of cleaning or substituting new for worn parts. Other objects will appear as the description progresses.
In the drawings` hereto annexed and forming a part of this application, I have shown a novel form and arrangement of parts constituting` one practical embodiment of my invention, of which I will describe the operation and details in the specification hereinafter following.

My improved mechanism comprises as mam elements, a stationary blade S, a movable blade M, an intermediate holding and spacing member H, a primary body meinber B, a secondary body member o, a locking member. L, a cross head C, and a driving element D, arranged and formed as clearly shown in the drawings and remov ably held together, the specific details and operation of which elements I will now describe.
Stationary blade S, as shown, has cutting teeth l and 2, formed on the opposite edges thereof, of the usual form and character and the teeth l are of greater pitch than the teeth 2, so that one pair of clippers may be provided with two complete sets of cutting edges of different character and size. Blade S, has a longitudinal and central depression 3, formed on Vthe upper face thereof and a central rounded rib 4, extending longitudinally of the bottom thereof and in the center, said rib, as shown in Fig. 2, being adapted to touch a line coinciding with the beveled surfaces of the teeth 2, and being adapted to rest upon the surface of the body as the clippers are operated.
Movable blade M, is slightly shorter than the blade S, and is adapted to berreciprocablyy mounted thereon, a longitudinal depression 3 being formed in the bottom thereof, which corresponds with the depression 3 in the top of the blade S. The faces s and s of blade S, and m and m of blade M, are adapted to be held in slidable contact when the clippers arev in operation and the movement of blade M over blade S is lifted and guided by means of lugs or pins 5, 5, on the blade S which extend upwardly through elongated slots 6, 6, formed in blade M, said lugs and slots being alined longitudinally of said blades and said lugs being extended slightly above the upper side of the blade M, for a purpose hereinafter described.

A pin 11 extends through a central. bore 12, in the blade S through an elongated slot 13 in blade M, which is in communication with the aperture 9 therein, and is extended substantially above and through a central bore 14 in the member L, said pin having a curved head15 on the bottom with shoulders thereon which engage the lower side Vof bladeS, as shown. f
The main body member B is positioned on the upper side'of member H and has a bore 16 extending therethrough, the sides thereof being extendedV in parallel rearwardly of the body,iand a floor 17 being substantially ex tended rearwardly beyond the sides.` A secondary body member has rearwardly extended handles 18 and 18 formed thereon rand a flat portion 19, which rests upon and serves as a cover for body member B. Member l; also has a boss 29on the lower side thereof, which seats in the upper end of the Vbore 16 of member B, and a rear end closing memberr21, whichcovers the rear end of member B and rests upon the floor 1'7 thereof and has a depending lug 22 on the lower Vedge thereof, which is adapted toV engage a bore or seat 23 near 'the rear edge of floor 17.
A cross head C is slidablyheld transversely of memberB and between the rear sideof saidinember and vmember 21 of member Z2. Saidcross head'has an inwardly extended. lug. 24 formed thereon which projects through. an3elongated opening 25 inV the lower portionofthe rear side of member B into the bore 16, a pin 26 abeing carriedin a bore 27,'in said lug which registers with and is `adapted to seat selectivelyV in the notches 10 of the locking member L. Opening 25 is of suflicient length tonpermit the transverse movement of the cross head C, or rather the lug 24 thereon in said opening.v The driving shaft D, is held in a bearing 29 formed on the member 19 of body member b, and the inner end of said shaft has a flange 30 thereon adapted to seat in an elongated deprestached to shaft D and housed in a flexible tube 36, as shown, for connecting the mechanism with a source of power.
All of the members described are firmly held together Vfor operation by means of a knurled nut 37 on the upper extended end of the retaining pin 11, and a flat operating member 38 is held in a notch 39 on the upper end of body member B, and has an operating end 40 exterior of said member and an inner.1 end 41, with a slot therein through which the retaining pin 11 extends, the extreme end of said member 39 being adapted to seat in an annular groove 43 on the head 44, of the locking pin 26, the arrangement of said spring and pin being such that a slight pres sure on the operating end 40 of said spring will raise the pin 26 from it s seat in the locking member L, and permit the manual turning'of the body members B and o, and cross head C for changing the position of the cutting edges of the blades S and M. A coil spring 45 is positioned between the oper ating member 38 and the boss 20 of member 7) and is adapted to be compressed when the outer end of member 38 is pressed, said spring serving to restore the pin 26 to a seat in one of the notches 10 of member L.
It will be understood that locking member Y L also serves to move the blade M by means of the lug 8, which seats in aperture 9, of blade M, and said locking memberis oscil lated by meansof the pin 26, in cross head C. The cross head, it will be apparent, is reeiprocated by means of the eccentric roller 33, which seats in the vertical slot 34 thereof. Member H has a central bore 46, which rotatably receives and holds the member- L for operation and-said member H is held stationary with the blade S by` means of the Alugs and `lug` seats hereinbefore described.
When operating member 36 Yis depressed into contact with the periphery of body member B, the pin 26 will be raised out of K engagement with member L, andthe body members lmay be turned at right angles to their previous positionl relative tothe blades S and MV for changing` the operating position ofthe blades, for it has been foun d to be convenient at times vtomake such a changefor affording access'to portions of the neel; and head during a liairclipping operation.
The handles 18 and 18" have horns 48 and 49, respectively, formed thereon for position ing the hand of the operator properly on and for facilitating the holding of the handles during the operation of the mechanism. It will be understood that the handles 18 and l8r may be made separable and one of said handles provided with a lug for operating the cross head C in a manner similar to that employed in my former invention, hereinbefore referred to, and such a change in myA present device will provide a mechanism capableV of operation by both power and manual means.
lVhat I claim is:
l. A hair clipper having relatively stationary and movable blades, a supporting body therefor, an oscillatable element for operating said movable blade, a cross head movable in a plane at right angles to the axis of and for operating said oscillatable element, and a rotatable element operably connected with and for moving said cross head.
2. A hair clipper comprising Va hollow body, a handle detachably held on and forming a top and back for said body, a driving element rotatably supported on the back of said handle, cutting blades detachably held on said body, a cross head slidably supported in said body and adapted to be reciprocated in a plane transversely of said handle by said driving element, and means for operatively connecting said cross head with one of said blades, as set forth.
3. A hair clipper comprising a hollow body having a handle projecting therefrom, a guideway being provided in the front portion of said body, a reciprocable primary operating element held in said guideway, means for operating said element, relatively stationary and movable cutters held on the bottom of said body, and an oscillatable secondary operating element interposed between and adapted to connect said reciprocating element with said movable cutter.
4. A hair clipper comprising a hollow body having a handle projecting therefrom, a guideway being formed in the front portion of said body, a reciproc'able primary operating element held in said guideway, means for operating said element, relatively stationary and movable cutters held on the bottom of said body, an oscillatable secondary operating element interposed between and adapted to connect said reciprocating element with said movable cutter, and means for detachably holding all of said parts to gether.
5. A hair clipper comprising a hollow body having a handle projecting therefrom, a guideway being formed in the front portion of said body, a reciprocable primary operating element held in said guideway, means for operating said element, relatively stationary and movable cutters held on the bottom of said body, an oscillatable secondary operating element interposed between and adapted to connect said reciprocating element with said movable cutter, and means on said oscillatable element (zo-acting with means on said reciprocable element, whereby the relative positions of the cutting edges of said cutters may be changed, andv the handle operatively disposed in planes paralleling and at right angles to the cutting edges of said cutters, selectively, at will.
6. A hair clipper comprising a hollow body, handles therefor, stationary and movable cutters, means for detachably holding said members together for use, means in said body for reciprocating said movable cutter, means also in said body for locking said handle and said body in selected positions transversely of and parallel with the cutting edges of said cutters, and resilient means acting thereagainst for holding said members in selected position during use, and having an extension from said body, whereby said members may be released for a change in position.
7. A hair clipper having a body, a stationary blade detachably held thereon, a movable blade interposed between said body and said stationary blade, a king pin eX- tending through'said blade and said body, an oscillatable element held on said pin and having a depending portion engaging said movable blade, and a plurality of peripheral notches in said upper surface, an operating member for moving said oscillatable member, a pin vertically movable in said operating member and adapted to engage said notches, means held on said body and engaging said pin for normally locking said members in operative position, and adapted to be manually operated for releasing said operating member and said oscillating member.
8. A hair clipper having a body, a stationary blade detachably held thereon, a movable blade interposed between said stationary blade and said body, a king-pin extending through said blade and said body, a rotatable element held on said pin and having a depending portion engaging said movable blade, means for operating said rotatable member, means held on the body for locking said body against movement relative to said blades and adapted to be manually operated to permit the rotation of said body about said king-pin for adjusting the relative angle of the handle and the cutting edges of said blades.
