ELECTRIC SWITCH.
Application filed Gctober 18, 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, lViLLIAir E. BELL, citizen oi the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of iutiolk and State of lilassachusetts, have invented new and useful improvements in Electric Switches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an automatic switch adapted for use in connection with motor driven motion picture machines, wherein the circuits for the lamp and the motor may be controlled by one piece of apparatus.
It is usual to wire the apparatus and install switches so that the motor and lamp are controlled by separate circuit closing devices. lln many localities the underwriters code calls for a switch for the motor which must be held closed by the operator, against the action of a spring, the switch being normally open. It the operator desires to leave the machine without stopping the motor, he usually ties the handle with a string. This involves danger, on account of the time required to release the switch in the event of the breaking of the film, or other accident.
In the present device the two circuits are controlled by the operation of one switch handle, which can not easily be tampered with in the manner indicated-or in other words, the presence of the operator is required.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a View in elevation, assuming that the switch is installed with its base in an upright position,
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is an end view,
Fig. i is a longitudinal section of the handle.
The base 10 may be of any suitable nonconducting material, and mounted thereon are terminals 11, 12, 13 and 14:, arranged in pairs as shown. Near these terminals are mounting elements 15, 16, 17, 18, for pivotally supporting the blades 19, 20, 21, 22. The terminal elements are in electrical connection with the blades, and the latter are connected to a yoke 23, of non-conducting material by bolts 2%, 25, 26 and 27. The blades coiperate with the contact elements 28, 29, 30, 31, mounted in the base in the required position.
Mounted on the yoke 23 is a handle 32, provided with a cap 33 and a ferrule 3d, the

handle being threaded at 66 for ellecting connection with the yoke. A recess 35 connects with a bore 36, the recess receiving portion 37 of the cap, said portion 37 being recessed as shown at 39. The cap also has a shoulder 38 which abuts the end of the handle.
plunger 4L0 is provided with an end portion ll engaging the body of the cap, and with a flange e2 abutting the end of the recess 39. A spring encircles the plunger being located in the recessed portions oi the handl and cap, and the plunger, slidable with reference to the bore 36. is threaded as at 1-8 through a yoke a6 and is engaged by a nut 16i.
filwitch blades 4:? and l8 are secured to the yoke 16 (of insulating material), by i 1.5 of screws e9. 50. The blades may be n'orided with openings 4L8, and may be proided. respectively with grooves and 51. The spring 'ers 5T. coiiperare with the b ames, the offset portions cu ng the grooves of the blades, and said in s including mounting elements 61,
curved resilient portions 62, and deflected ends 63. In order to maintain the alinemcnt of the vertically movable elements, guide roos 6st and are employed. They are mounted on yoke a6 and pass through yoke 23.
Spring lingers 56, 57, 58, 59 are secured by means of screws 52, 53, 54:, 55, and are connected. with the motor circuit of the picture machine, and this circuit is closed by pressure on the cap 33, thereby bringing the blades 43?, 4:8 into contact with the fingers last mentioned. The engagement between elements 60 and grooves 50 and 51 efiects good electrical contact, but the constant pressure of the hand on the cap is required in order to maintain the engagement. The lighting circuit or circuits are connected with the remaining terminals on the base, and are controlled by the main switch including yoke If the yoke 46 is tied down, for retaining the motor circuit closed, the yoke 23 may still be swung outwardly, the blades 4.7, 4:8 being quickly separated from the ends of the coiperating spring fingers. thereby breaking the circuit of the motor as well as the lighting circuit.
What I claim is 7 1. In an electric switch. a base, a plurality of blades pivotally mounted thereon, a yoke connecting the blades, operatingmeans for the yoke, contact members cooperating with the blades, a plurality of spring fingers mounted on the base, and adapted for connection with an electric circuit, blades cooperating with the fingers, a yoke connected with the blades last named, and means controlling the yoke last named and causing the blades connected therewith to contact with the spring fingers, said means being mounted on the yoke first named, but having a movement independent thereof.
2. In an electric switch, a base, a pluralit Y of blades pivotally mounted thereon, a yoke connecting the blades, contact members cooperating with the blades, a plurality of spring fingers mounted on the base and adapted for connection with an electric circuit, blades cooperating with the fingers, a yoke connected with the blades last named, and means for moving the yokes and all of the blades simultaneously to inoperative position, said means permitting movement of one of the yokes independently of the other.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WILLIAM E. BELL.
