Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed January 7, 1919. Serial No. 270,018.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUoUsT H. FLEOK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Oklahoma, in the county of Okla homa and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Surgical Devices, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention has reference generally to improvements in that class of inventions known as surgery and more particularly has reference to a surgical device.
It is the principal aim and object of this invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character designed to be inserted in the vagina and inflated for holding a saturated absorbent member in the proper position, thus serving as an efiective treatment for social diseases and at the same time acting to properly support the womb.
More particularly this invention consists in the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein there is employed a pneumatic cushion and an absorbent mantel arranged in surrounding relation and supported by the cushion when the latter is inflated, thus insuring of the healing and disinfecting solution, with which the mantle is either saturated or coated, coming in contact with the affected parts for the curing of the same.
It is a more specific object of this invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character wherein a speculum and rod are employed for use in conjunction with the cushion and mantle for the proper positioning of the latter and to also provide means for inflating the cushion subsequent to the application thereof.
among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character described with a view to compactness, and in which the parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the efliciency high.
Uther improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the aparatus will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration aconvenient and satisfactory embodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this connection that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the principle of operation of the various parts.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the device applied.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional detail of the various parts assembled preparatory to being applied.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the cushion and mantle, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail of the inflating bulb.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one end of the pneumatic cushion.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly to the accompanying drawings there is provided a tube 1, hollow and either round or oval in cross section as described, both ends being open while one end in addition is flared as at 2. This tube is designed to facilitate the application of the demos, it being formed of suitable metal and of course is removed when the device is ready for use as will become apparent.
A pneumatic cushion 3 is employed and is preferably of an elongated form, the end 4- being formed with an opening 16 back of which there is fitted a check valve 5.
Arranged in surrounding relation with the cushion 3 is. a similarly shaped mantle 6 of cloth or absorbent material. One end of the mantle is closed while the other end is open forming in efiect a bag.
In assembling the parts the bag-like mantle is arranged in surrounding relation with the cushion while both the mantle and cushion are arranged within the tube, the latter being in contact with the mantle.
In applying the device in position a sectional rod 7 is provided and is composed of two sections 8 and 9. The solid section 8 is telescoped within the hollow section 9 while the latter is formed with an elongated bayonet slot 10 in which is engaged a lug 11, formed with the solid section 8, .by this construction these sections may be releasably locked in an extended position. The rod is arranged between the cushion and the mantle, one end abutting the closed end of the latter while the tube is forced into the 17 formed on diametrically opposite sidesof the opening 16. When the cushion is infiated the stem is removed, the valve 5 servin to hold the cushion in an inflated conditionwhile the cushion in turn yieldingly supports or holds the saturated or coated mantle in engagement or contact with the affected parts for the effective curing thereof. When it is desired to remove the cushion and mantle it is only necessary to insert the stem of the bulb 13 in the opening 4 to open the valve 5 and release the air and thus deflate the cushion, thereby permittin of an easy removal of the cushion and mant e.
It is believed in View of the foregoing description that a further detailed description of the device is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the advantage of the invention will be readily apparent.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:-
1. A device of the character described including a pneumatic cushion and an absorbent mantle arranged in surrounding relation therewith and supported thereby.
2. A device of the character described including a pneumatic cushion, an absorbent mantle disposed thereabout, and a tube disposed about the mantle and cushion to facilitate the application thereof and being subsequently removable.
3. In a device of the character described in combination, a pneumatic cushion, having an opening in one end, a valve for closing the opening, a bag-like absorbent mantle arranged in surrounding relation with respect to the cushion, means for facilitating t e application of the cushion and mantle, means for facilitating the removal of the first mentioned means without disturbing the cushion and mantle, and means for infiatin the cushion.
4. i device of the character described comprising a tubular absorbent mantle, and means for inserting it in an affected part of the human body in a collapsed condition and subsequently extending it for intimate contact with such affected arts.
