Improvement i n Pruning Shears.

UNITED STATES PATENT CEEIGE.
PIzIILO M. GILBERT, OF GAMANCHE, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRUNlNG-SHEARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,220, dated November 19,1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHIL@ M. GILBERT, of
Camanche, inthe county of Clinton and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pruning-Shears; and do hereby declare that the following is a full,
, clear; and exact description thereof, reference being had'to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a pruningshear, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of my pruning-shear, and Fig. 2 is a perspective of the cuttingblade.
A A represent the handles of my pruning-l shears, to which are attached the levers B B', respectively, the outer end of the lever B being pivoted to the lever B at a. The levers B B' have, at or near their inner ends, levers G C pivoted to them, respectively, the outer ends of these latter levers being pivoted, respectively, to-the shanks of the jaw D and cutting-blade G, these two being pivoted together at d. The outer end of the lever B is also pivoted at b to the shank of the cuttingblade G. The jaw D, instead of being square where the limb is to rest, is made with a cutting-edge, e, or beveled to a cutting-edge, thereby holding the limb iirmly, not allowing it to slip, which a square edge will not do. At the outer end of the cutting-blade Gr is a small `cutting-hook, h, for use in cutting out watersprouts and small shrubbery.
The combination of levers described makes the shears very effective, allows of a wider expansion of the j aws with a less expanse of the handles, and allows ofthe attachment of longer knives in trimming hedge.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the levers B B and C C with the handles, jaw, and cutting-blade of a pruning-shear, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the handles A A',
. levers B B and C C', jaw D, with cuttingedge e, and cutting-blade Gr with cutting-hook h, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this lst da-y of April, 1872.
- PHILO M. GILBERT.
