Be it known that I, J OSEPH H. ELLIOTT, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention pertains in general to garment supporters, and has more particular reference to a waist-line supporter particularly adapted for trousers to supplement the ordinary belt or suspenders usually worn for this purpose, and also well adapted for attachment to the waistband of skirts.

The primary object of my invention is to provide a simple and novel means for supporting body garments of various kinds about the waist-line of a wearer, and contemplates a supporting means of such character as to be adapted for both mens and womens garments.

As regards the use of my improvements with mens garments such as trousers, an object isto provide a trousers supporter of generally improved construction, whereby the use of the ordinary suspenders and belt may be dispensed with and the trousers is supported in'such manner that the strain is brought to bear entirely on the hips and is relieved fromthe abdomen, and is further supported in such novel manner as to prevent wrinkling, drawing and bunching of the trousers about the waist and to hold the Another object of my invention resides in the provision of a garment supporter of such simple and novel construction that it will serve in a practical and satisfactory manner the purposes in mind and which is of such simple construction as to be capable of production at a comparatively low cost.

My'invention also contemplates the provision of a garment supporter, including a plurality of sections, some of which are elastic, and connection members or plates adapted to be permanently attached to the garment and to which connection members the various sections of the supporter are detachably connected so that such sections may be detached from the connection members for any reason, such for example as 'when the garment is sent to a cleaner or is being" cleaned.

provide a garment supporter in the form of what might be termed an inside sectional belt, the several sections of which are detachably connectible to the garment, whether a skirt or trousers, and certain sections are elastic and adapted to be adjusted as to length to enable the proper adjustment of the supporter to a wearer.

Other objects and attendant advantages will be appreciated as the invention becomes better understood by reference to the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view illustrating in connection with trousers, the manner of attaching a garment supporter embodying my improvements, thereto;

In the present exemplification of my improvements, I have taken as an example the attachment of a garment supporter to a pair of mens trousers. The supporter is of that type adapted for attachment to the inside of the trousers about the waist-line for the purpose of properly supporting the trousers on a wearer without the use of suspenders, outside belts, or supporting means of any character which impose a strain on the abdomen or are the source of any inconvenience to the wearer. More particularly,

. my improvements contemplate the provision of a sectional garment supporter, including elastic sections fastened to the garment at the front and rear of the hips so that the elastic sections are drawn across and held upon the hips of the wearer, thus supporting the garment from four points thereon, closer at the hip than across the front or back. These elastic sections are preferably connected by front and back inelastic sections which serve not only to hold the elastic sections in proper cooperative relation and position while in use, but also prevent wrinkling and drawing of the garment at the waist-line, and further serve to more evenly distributethe strain so as to avoid undue or noticeable strains across the abdomen.

It is intended that my improved garment supporter shall be positioned either close to the top edge of the waistband of a garment in which case a form of connection plate similar to that shown in Fig. a might be used, or at any lower position according to the particular conditions and requirements at hand, and in such latter cases, connection plates as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive would be used. Referring now to the latter form, I attach a pair of connection-plates 6 and 7 to the inside of the garment, as to the trousers, one at each side'of the back seam and just at the rear of the hips. These connection plates in their present form are of sheet" metal shaped to provide forward and rear slots or eyes '8 and 9 respectively, and thread slots'or' openings 11 for attachment of the plates to the garment by means of thread 12 as indicated plainly in Fig. 1. A rear strip or-se'ction of inelastic material 13 is equipped with hooked ends 14: adapted for engagement in the eyes 9 of the connection plates 6 and 7. To each side portion of the trousers and at the front of the hips is attached a connection plate15 similar to those justdescribed and each provided with a pair of slots or eyes and sewed tothe trousers as in the previous "instance; The pairs of connection plates 6-15 and 715 are connected by elastic strips or sections designated generally by the characters 16 and'17 respectively. Each elastic strip includes, preferably, a band of elastic material adjustable as to length and equipped with hooks '18 adapted 'for engagement in the points of its respective connection plates. A front strip or section 19 of inelastic material is equipped with hooks 21 adapted for attachment to the connection plates- 15 as will Ibe manifest from the drawing, although if desired, this front section might be made in two parts with a suitable central connection. WVhen the trousers equipped with the supporter as shown in Fig. 1, are adjusted on the wearer with the 'loose hook 21 of-the front strip 19 connected to the plate 15, an innenbelt-like supporting means is pro- ;vided "having elastic portions drawn taut upon each hip. Thus the trousers are supported solely by the hip portions of the wearer through the agency of elastic supporting members which are. respectively connected at their ends to the adjoining portion of the trousers and thus support the latter from four points quite evenly distributed about thewaist-line. The elastic fbands 13and 1 9 prevent drawing and distorting' of the trousers ,and veryeffectually serve, connection with "the "intermediate elastic portions, to hold the trousers neatly in position. It will'be noted that each section is detachable, simply by unhooking its ends from its respective connection plate, which plates in practice are proportionally smaller than those illustrated in the drawings, and thus occupy but a small space so as to cause no inconvenience to the wearer, and do not interfere with cleaning of the garment. In order to, further 7 insure against sagging of the garment at any point about the waist-line, I have provided a number of tabs 26 attached to the garment and through which the respective sections are passed, the tabs being preferably positioned about midway between the hooked ends of the sections.

In Figs. 4 and 5, I have illustrated another form of connection plate 522, which may be used in place of the connection plates 6, 7 and 15, if desired. The connection plate 22 has a pair-of slots or eyes 23 and an upper clamping end 2% adapted to befolded over the top edge of the'garme'nt and clamped thereto, the opposed clamping surfaces of the connection plate being provided with suitable holding spurs 25 or the equivalent, for insuring against displacement of the'connection plate.

When my improvements are applied to a womans garment, such as a ski-rt, the sections will be attached to the waistband in substantially the same relative relation as described above with reference 'to the trousers. Inlthis regard, it will be noted that a sectional band or belt is provided for the inside of the waistband, the sections of which are separately connected to the fastening devices on the waistband, thus permitting the garment to beopened at either the front, back or side, as maybe desired. I

It is believed that the foregoing conveys a clear understandingof the mode of-use and principles of my invention, and while I have illustratcda particular working example thereof, it shouldbe understood that various changes might be made in construction and arrangement without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in which I claim: 1. A" garment supporter comprising an elastic strip for each hip portion of a garment, detachably connected to the front and rear of said hip portions, fastening devices attached to the'garment and to which said elastic strips are detachably connected at their front and rear ends, and an inelastic strip interposed between and connected to the rear fastening devices.

3. A garment supporter comprising connection plates attached to a garment, one in front and another at the rear of each hip portion of such garment, and each connection plate having a pair of slots therein, a back strip having hooked ends for connection in the rearmost slots of the back plates, an elastic strip for connecting each pair of plates at each hip portion, and a front strip connecting the front plates.

4. A garment supporter comprising an inelastic section, a pair of elastic sections, means connecting each elastic section to an end of the inelastic section comprising a connection plate having an extended end adapted to be turned down over the top edge of the Waistband of a garment and clamped thereto for securing the connection plate in position on the garment.

5. In a garment supporter, a plurality of supporter sections having hooked ends, and means for attaching said sections to a garment comprising a plurality of connection members shaped for the reception of said hooked ends and further shaped to fit over the top edge of the garment and to be clamped thereto for securing the connection members in position.

6. A garment supporter comprising an inelastic back section having hooked ends, connection plates shaped to receive said hooked ends, means securing the plates to a garment, a pair of elastic sections adjust able as to length and having front and rear hooked ends, the rear ends being for attachment to said connection plates, and a front connection plate secured to each front portion of the garment for attachment of the front hooked end of the adjacent elastic section thereto.
