IMPROVEMENT IN CHAlRS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 332362, dated November 5, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I WILLIAM W. HAUPT, of Mountain City, in the county of Hays and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chairs, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and

exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents avertical section of my improved chair; and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.

swing on the pins a so as to adjustitself to the position of the person occupying the chair, whose back leans against said plate. Thus, if the back of the occupant is inclined forward, the lower end of the plate G will be thrown back; if inclined backward, the upper end of G will also be thrown back; and if the persons back is held quite straight the plate will also hang perpendicular. An adjustable support for the back is thus provided which will absolutely prevent a curvature of the back dangerous to health or injurious to appearance.

The back need not extend above the pivot, and maybe entirely dispensed with if posts for holding the plate 0 are made to project from the seat.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A back-plate, O, journaled below the middle of the chair-back, and in bearings that project forward therefrom, as and for the purpose specified.
